Red Flags decide Pole... Max didn’t get his second run as Tsunoda puts it in the wall, and Sainz crashes avoiding Tsunoda

Three place grid penalty for Norris, so he will start from 9th. Brings Perez, Tsunoda and Alonso up a spot each.

Traded in Gasly. He scores 24 points from qualifying so already goes past his BE.

Wanted Gasly and Perez this round. $300,000 short of doing so from Leclerc & Tsunoda.

Team this round:

Verstappen (C)
Perez
Sainz
Tsunoda

Red Bull x 2
Ferrari x 2

Bit of a restructure, chasing a bit of cash, as I'm well behind there. Last round ruined any chance of a top result anyway.

Merc, Tsunoda and Russell to Alfa, Perez and Sainz. Very Red Bull and Ferrari focussed for now, 7/8, the Alfa is my only exception. Could be good, could be brutal, there's not much in between.
Brought in an AlphaTauri in the end rather than the Alfa, looking like a good move with both making Q3.

Possibly should have captained Leclerc this round rather than last, even if both of his poles have been due to crashes red flagging the end of qualifying.

I know it's always a possibility at street races, but I hate it when the top guys don't get a second run at pole due to crashes.

Hope Max can get past Hamilton and Leclerc quickly in the race. The Red Bull Car does look pretty quick.

We might not be far away from drivers causing red flags in qualifying losing their times in that session. Even so, that doesn't fix the issue of the remaining drivers missing out on setting another lap.

Maybe F1 needs to look at having an 'emergency 3 minutes of Q3' in the schedule after qualifying. If an incident occurs in the last 3 minutes of Q3, the emergency time is activated once the incident is cleaned up. Probably wouldn't need to delete the crashed driver's time in that case either. (I'm only suggesting this for Q3, so we get to see all of the pole runs.)

Also, Hamilton was speaking after the session about a tweak the team made (sounds like it was in relation to getting the tyres in the window) in FP3 that caused his performance turnaround. It sounds like Bottas had this tweak as well and that still only had him just inside the top 10 in Q1-Q3. This is starting to look like a really rough season for Bottas.

I wonder if they think the sprint race idea will mitigate some of this?

I'm not sure that's the main reason. It seems to be more about entertainment and doing something different.

There are comments floating around that in future years they would like to have four sprint races, at one race weekend on four different continents (Europe, North America, South America, Asia/Australia) and call it a tennis style Grand Slam. That feels a bit gimmicky to say the least.

Mercedes may have done it again here...
Not a great stop for Perez either but it looks like he's gotten away with it!

Meanwhile Bottas undercut by Norris and not making any ground at all. Hoo boy.
