Greg Broughton, now a Gold Coast player with his move from Fremantle may now have a new sense of SuperCoach life. However, will this new SuperCoach life mean Broughton is in your team?

Name - Greg Broughton (GCS)
Position - DEF / FWD
Price - $441,900
Average - 82.6(15), 92.6(21), 98.6(15), 98.7(15)
Draw - STK, SYD, BRL, PORT, GWS, FRE, MEL, RIC, HAW, GEE, NTH, ESS, BYE

REASONS FOR GREG BROUGHTON

Prior to last year, when Ross Lyon became the Fremantle Head Coach, Broughton averaged in the 90s in his previous three years. Interestingly, Broughton's best SuperCoach year (98.7) was in his rookie year. There have been lots of media attention (well at least in the fantasy world) that Ross Lyon was not really a fan of Broughton and as a consequence Broughton was played out of position at Fremantle in 2012. Either way the past is the past and now Broughton is at Gold Coast.

The first reason to pick Broughton is that arguably Broughton is under-priced and if you ignore 2012, which I believe Broughton was Ross Lyon effected, then Broughton historical average is 97, but is priced at 82.6.

Secondly, now that Broughton plays for Gold Coast, you would say he is a lock for every game in a young team. Furthermore, it is likely that Broughton will have some midfield time and/or half back line and won't be played out of position. I cannot see him playing in a lock-down mode, when the Gold Coast midfield, save for Gary Ablett, needs some help.

Thirdly, Broughton is categorised as a Dual Position Player as a Defender and Forward, which may come in handy, especially if you have Brent Staker and/or Nathan Bock in your SuperCoach team.

REASON AGAINST GREG BROUGHTON

I'll be honest and say that initially I didn't want Broughton in my SuperCoach team and I think it relates to his SuperCoach performance in 2012, which as aforementioned I believe was effected by Ross Lyon. While I know many people do not want our Collingwood Bad Boy, Heath Shaw, but for some reason I prefer Shaw over Broughton. It may be a Brand Name issue, but I don't think so.

Based on the poll in the Goddard, Gibbs and Rockliff article, where currently 80% believe Goddard and Gibbs are locks, we can assume that most teams will have Goddard and Gibbs, which leaves 4 onfield spots in the Defence. Probably 2-3 of these onfield spots will be rookies / mid-pricers and thus Broughton will be fighting for these onfield positions against Duffield, Waters, Grimes, Adcock, Birchall and Heath Shaw.

My heart says No, but my brain says Yes. For now, Broughton is a Watch and it's a difficult decision until we watch a few Gold Coast games in the pre-season games.

Verdict: WATCH(3)

My decision is a firm No!
Trust me, I agree with you but boy, Broughton's stats/price look decent and now in a Gold Coast outfit.

I really don't want Broughton in my team, but ............................ so much unknowns.

I can see myself getting very annoyed every week if I pick Broughton and he becomes a lemon.
On the other hand, I can see myself getting very annoyed every week, if I don't pick Broughton and he becomes a Top 6 defender. If only Broughton was categorised as a Midfielder, it would have made my decison much easier!

Is it too early to get a headache over Broughton? LOL

I am having the exact same dilemma in choosing my third 'premium' defender out of Shaw and Broughton. I agree that he was played out of position last year but is it really worth the risk when he will playing in such a bad side that will still have huge losses (which typically hurt a players ability to crack the ton - unless your surname rhymes with Gablett) when for a little more cash we get a proven top 5 scoring defender in Shaw who will again play in a likely top 4 team?

Broughton does have the Ivan Maric of 2012 capabilities to be a real premium in his position spurred on after a change of clubs, but this is a far worse club than Richmond just now!

I think the risk is too high and unless you are going for 4 premium defenders I am saying unlikely for now. I will watch his NAB cup campaign closely.

I think the pain of picking him, and regretting it, is worse than the pain of not picking him, and regretting it.
It's hard to see him playing that much above the other Defs, so your loss is not too bad if he does go nuts, against that, if he keeps teasing you with 80-85, you'll never know when to dump him, as he slowly drags you down.
Given the limited spaces in Def, I just can't see how I would fit him in. That's a no from me. :)

WATCH for me at the moment. Would need to see his role and scores throughout the NAB Cup and they would want to be very SC friendly for me to put him in my side. His DPP is encouraging as I currently have Staker in my forward line but does that make him a better option than Duffield or Shaw for me? I am not sure at the moment?

Big no for me on Broughton, He will go straight to the backline with Murphy and Harbrow is moving more up the field to play some midtime but will also be down back. I have a feeling Broughton will be a key defender.

In case anyone was wondering...

Broughton's position based on averages:

2009 - 5th best defender - 98.7 (15 games)
2010 - 6th - 98.6 (15)
2011 - 10th - 92.6 (21)
2012 aka Year of the Lyon - 32nd - 82.6 (15)

From an article on AFL website Broughton Goes Back.

Broughton played 68 games in his four seasons at Freo, but was shuffled from his usual half-back role into the forward line under Ross Lyon last year.

The quietly spoken defender said he wanted a new challenge and intended on cementing his spot across half-back.

"That's the plan. I've been training in that spot over the pre-season and plan to do so going forward.

"Bluey has said I'm the only one that can lose that spot.

He's a lock as D4. I usually like having one mid-pricer with potential in my defence. If he plays off half-back without having to play a lock-down role, I believe he is going to average 95+. He did some nice things at Freo. I admit, he burnt me last year but I'm willing to forgive him. I just like him in my defence.

Actually, everyone stay away please. I hope he has a great season so that I can have him as a POD :p

Are you only placing him against Shaw because you wrote on article on Shaw yesterday? Broughton is 100k cheaper and I think we can agree that playing him as a defensive forward is the most obvious case of being 'played out of position'. Shaw's highest ever average is 106 and that was 6 years ago, I would expect him to average 100 like the last two seasons and would place Broughton at 95+. No brainer for mine, Broughton locked at D4.

Encouraging article, thanks sc2013.
If this is true then his chances of a spot in my side are definitely increased, most of my decision now rely on some viewing of the NAB Cup and seeing players new roles and the way they score.

In for the moment. Lyon did not use has assets, ( in a SC scoring sense), has the ability to get a good bit of the ball, worth a risk, he can play. Remember, with 30 trades this year, more of an opportunity to fix a mistake.

Still reminded of the agony of having him last year but at b3 for me at the moment. I think with the right role 95+ is very possible.

Watch. Want to say no but I keep on getting pulled in year after year.

It is like the film franchise 'The Final destination'. (Or insert your own movie sequal equilivent in here).

The first movie I had no expectations, paid nothing to see it, and loved it when I actually quite enjoyed the movie. Just like Broughton's first year.
Then there were the sequals. Due to the performance of the first movie I was more than willing to give them a go. But each time I felt it was just more of the same, and with each sequal I have become a bit more dissappointed to the point where I have now said that enough is enough.

However suddenly it's like I am faced with the (hypothetical) news that they will make another movie, only this time there is a whole new cast and crew who promise to regenerate the franchise!!!! Further I can purchase a movie ticket at a 20% discount!

Should I pay the price for the ticket? This new movie could be awesome! But have I not learnt anything? Will it not be more of the same? What happens if I pay the price and after a few minutes I start to realise I have bought into the hype again as the movie just doesn't quite deliver? Will I have the courage to get out of my seat and leave the movie? Or will I sit there and hope it gets better... And what if by the half way make it still doesn't improve do I leave or am I now invested in it? Will I convince myself that 'well I have come this far, I may as well watch it till the end'. Perhaps there will be some glimpses of brilliance, but alas I feel I will most likely will yet again walk out of the movie theatre a little dissappointed.
