I think there's been plenty of downgrade targets, question is if people have been willing to jump on

It will be interesting to come back at the end of the season and see how many of the top 24 are in the top echelon for the second half of the year only.

I only have 10 from that list which might go a long way to explaining while I have a ranking of only 3000 :(

This thread actually gives good insight into how my team's going. I have 11 so my team is not in great shape just yet. Hopefully can use some of my under-performing premo's as stepping stones to these guns listed.

From that list I have 15... but you have to take in to account people who trade players in and there player has started to average higher... Team as it stands:

Swallow
Simpson
Bartel
McVeigh
Hibberd
Murphy

Ablett
Pendles
Rockliff
Beams
Selwood
Watson
Murphy
Cotchin

Sandilands
Jacobs

Dangerfield
Gray
Martin
Pavlich
Franklin
Petrie

(Riewoldt on bench)

So week links are:
Robert Murphy (looked good last game but only managed 102)
Cotchin (don't get me started...)
Jacobs (had from the start and has been a great pick.... now what to do)
Pav and Petrie (I just use my FD and bring Riewoldt in when the opportunity arises)

Rank 170...

The top scorers will always be important. I think that amongst all the carnage, it has been about how much you have avoided that counts.

Hurn's 7, Mitchell's 8, Fas's 29, Buddy's 32 and his 50's or whatever, Crouch, Cutler, JKH, Impey, Georgiou and Lewie Taylor. I could add less than impressive efforts from Adcock, Pav and FknLobbe while I also had BenKen in for his first round 22.

And that's just my sob story...

Others have had to deal with Rohan, Swan, Cotchin, Bews, Cameron, Wingard, Roughie, Goldstein, Enright, Petrie, Lloyd, Zorko, Hanley, A Walker, H Taylor, Mayne, Mundy, Griff... all of them shyte.

So while the more heavy hitters you have the better, I think it is all about who has managed to avoid the most carnage and keep growing their team to date. Who has been able to keep the minimum number o dribblers from stinking up their 22.

I've got only 10 of the top scorers but am in 1700th or so. IDIG is top 100 and only has 12. Goodies has 13 and is in 4800th+

Think instead of the players average, the players total points for each position is a better gauge of how you have done so far. Then the average is more for how you should perform from now. Total points changes only a few of the players.
Def: Swallow, Simpson, Bartel, McVeigh, Malceski, Burgoyne
MID: Ablett, Pendles, JPK, Beams, Libba, Watson, Dal Santo (Dangerfield MPP but is actually the 8th MID too)
RUCK: Sandi, Jacobs
FOR: Danger, Gray, Harvey, Parker, Martin, Breust

Just having a look at the top ranked players in their respective positions from 2013 and how they are going so far in 2014. I have listed the players in order of their rank from last year and next to it their position based on average points and by total points in parentheses. Out of the top 30 players (from their respective positions) only around 11 players have backed it up this season.

DEFENDERS:
1. A Walker - 20 (rank based on average), 53 (rank based on total points)
2. J McVeigh - 4 (4)
3. J Bartel - 3 (3)
4. S Mitchell - 16 (91)
5. R Murphy - 17 (13)
6. S Thompson - 29 (34)
7. H Shaw - 19 (31)
8. L Hodge - 31 (61)

MIDFIELDERS:
1. G Ablett - 1 (1)
2. S Pendlebury - 2 (2)
3. J Selwood - 6 (5)
4. D Swan - 55 (63)
5. R Griffen - 77 (75)
6. S Johnson - 14 (29)
7. L Montagna - 25 (43)
8. J Watson - 8 (7)
9. M Barlow - 23 (122)
10. J Steven - 76 (123)

RUCKS:
1. W Minson - 5 (3)
2. T Goldstein - 11 (6)
3. D Cox - 6 (4)
4. M Kruezer - 28 (44)

FORWARDS:
1. P Dangerfield - 1 (1)
2. N Riewoldt - 15 (8)
3. B Harvey - 3 (3)
4. D Petrie - 98 (61)
5. D Martin - 7 (5)
6. C Wingard - 41 (42)
7. J Westhoff - 25 (16)
8. J Roughead - 22 (24)

Ablett, Pendlebury & Dangerfield show their class as being great picks from the start of the season to the midway point.
Petrie, Griffen & Swan probably the biggest disappointments in the first half of the year.

Nice post Pearcey.

Am I the only one remembering Rowsus's article about high priced defenders not holding their worth? :)

Probably my only big mistake at the start of the year leaving him out.

Spot on you can always get a defender under 500k. Always been my rule and never will pay a lot for them.

I hate this. Way too arbitrary.

Do you count midfielders listed as defenders in this category? (McVeigh, Simpson, Bartel, Mitchell, Swallow?) If Ablett or Pendlebury are given def/mid for some reason next year, do you not buy them?

It seems in every position players don't hold their value, you just need to pick the right ones...

Just Defenders, all them players at one stage lost 60 to 70k off there starting price. When would Ablett or Pendlebury get D/M so no point even talking about it. Yes i pick one over the 500k that i know will be a must have. Anyway every one has there rules and this works for me every year.

It makes for interesting discussion. McVeigh/Bartel for me are the ones that are kinda 50/50 but the rest of them have hurt coaches who could've been grabbed cheaper later on.

Simpson and maybe Hibberd who are just above 500 have been worth their price i suppose but for every Simpson/hibbered, mcveigh, bartel you have walker/murphy/hanley/shaw/hodge.

If we could find 4 Swallows every year life would be so much easier...except some times they turn into Grimes :/

Yeah pretty much. I'll dig around and find the thread when I get home tonight. It wasn't a straight up value thing. The premise was that people were mistaken by going out and paying top dollar for defenders, thinking it would guarantee them points. The top 6 defenders at the start would too often fall out of the top 6 or 8... even top 10

Other than Goddard, you only had one year where the top priced defenders (best performers of the year before) stayed in the top bracket of points earners the following year. Other than Goddard, you'd usually get only 1 or 2 guys who'd stay in the top 6. And yep, that included DPPs.

BTW, Swallow is out of this discussion as he was only like 430k or something.

And the discussion revolved around starting price from memory? - as you could pick them up under 500k at some point in the future...

So Simpson meets the rule (dropped below 500k round 3-5), Bartel has got as low as 520k in round 9 (50k lower than his start price), and McVeigh has got as low as 520k in round 5 (50k lower than his start price). Walker dropped below 500k in round 5 and has stayed there.

I think the 500k rule has merit, but of course you need to be ready to jump on the best defenders when their price reaches their bottom price - for both Bartel and McVeigh this year that was only for a round before it rebounded.

Yep. It was all to do with starting price (which is a direct reflection on how they went last year)
