Legal expenses, fines and penalties
Fines and penalties for on-field conduct and legal expenses, including those relating to a tribunal decision, are generally tax deductible to the player, where they result from their performance as a player and as part of the sporting activity.
However, fines, penalties and legal expenses for off-field breaches of conduct are not tax deductible.
So Connoissuer, as I need to setup my retirement fund, seems you are the right bloke to speak too....

Almost as good as being able to claim your gambling losses like you can in the US. IRA tax gamlbing winnings, therefore your losses are deductions on your annual return. You can also claim interest on your home mortgage as well.

Few blokes on SCS might appreciate being able to claim losses. I know I would. Covid was great for me. Year prior I looked at my annual data at local golf club and it showed I dropped 5k on pokies in the previous 12 months. Now instead of Pokies I am having a holiday in FNQ with a couple of grand left over. Easy to lose trac of what we spend.

I can tell you from experience (not personal) that the ATO are very loathed to recognise someone as a Professional Punter, for that exact reason. If they tax the winnings, they have to allow the losses to be deducted. I know 2 or 3 guys that lodged returns as "Prof Punter", and the ATO knocked it back. Their stance is pretty much, we might get money off you this year, but in the end it will cost us more than it gets us.
I know a bloke, who did nothing punt for 30 years. Every year, for about 10 years, he fronted the ATO, with very precise records of his punting, and showing it was his income. Every year he got a "Thanks for showing us this. No we won't recognise you as a Prof Punter." He gave up after 10 years, and retired after 30 years of punting, almost exclusively on the gallops.

Belongs in the Happy Happy Joy Joy thread. :love:

Fantastic to hear and I hope financial literacy is eventually an essential part of the curriculum. Too often the opportunity cost is not considered in regards to the usage of “Pokies”.

Needed Oliver for over 31.5 disposals last week to seal the last leg of my multi and clear $950. He had 7 minutes in the last quarter to get 1 damn disposal, but got benched for about 4 minutes, then comes on and doesn’t touch it the rest of the match.

Tonight he comes out and gathers 41 disposals, easy as you like!

Moral of the story: Don’t gamble and rant about your losses on a public forum

Two sub 100 Cs in a row (Macrae and Steele), missing out on Neale’s 180 and Cripps big score………

:sick::sick::sick:
I don't know if it makes you feel any better but Steele's 140 in round 6 is the only time since round 2 that I've had a captain score above 123 and that this round became just the 2nd round since round 1, when I had no loophole, that my captain outscored my VC when Neale pipped Touk by a point (while being the 2nd and 3rd worst of my mids).

I also managed to trade Curnow out of my side this week because he only had about 10k to make from a couple of 90s...
