Every year there are some players in the 'just beyond rookie price' bracket that have a few years in the system, are maturing into a best 22 player and for whatever reason are nicely priced. In 2019 we had:

Josh Battle - 2019 (20yo) - $232k - 75.2 average to R10, priced at $391k. ~$160k profit
Darcy Moore - 2019 (23yo) - $239k - 79.1 average to R8, priced at $379k. ~$140k profit
James Cousins - 2019 (21yo) - $219k - 71.3 average to R11 (missed one game), priced at $357k. ~$140k profit

Get this kind of pick right and not only do they make more cash than a run-of-the-mill rookie, but they play on field and deliver much better scores for the investment. How many people had Matt Parker last year instead delivering rubbish on field ($117k starting price, made $123k profit by his bye, averaging 56)?

Who are these players this year? Some people have mentioned Rayner (though how you play 22 games and average 46 is a bit mistifying - that's close to the worst full SC season ever right?); someone like Brayden Sier can punch out 100s when he's on. Who else?

Don't you have one right under your nose in Bailey Scott. Scored a ton in his first game then dropped on the face of the earth. Understand he killed it in a match sim at Roos training the other day. Also heard good things about Comben as well although not sure he will get a game.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see some of our up and coming players get a shot to see what they have.

I think we've recruited too many top up players that cannot really improve beyond what they do currently (Pittard, Hall, Tyson etc.) along with having a bunch of established players who aren't getting any better (Atley, Macmillan, McDonald for some). We were better under Shaw last year for sure, but any further improvement (like finals) has to come from getting better output from the list, so we need to develop some new talent.

So I hope the coach throws at least half a season into players like Scott, because I can't see it being worse for the club than playing any of those other players I mentioned

he probably should as he will now have the tank by the sounds of it and even if he doesn't have significant time it would still be enough to have a good average

and if he plays mostly forward he would still be a good pick due to be being such a hard match up and at 250k it would still be worth it
