Tbh Gws should keep both Ash and Cumming in for that dash off halfback which williams wont be needed to do and have williams as that Xfactor midfielder than having similar type in Green/hately and Ward when hes back
Not pretending to know for sure but I am assuming Williams will replace Cummings or Ash, I am hoping it's Cummings.
They really need to be pumping games into their young midfielders rather than throwing Williams in there who's run is better down back, GWS have done really well at turning over the midfield talent they keep bringing in while balancing salaries and keeping the ones they want while cutting the ones they can do without loose so I think it's a strategy they continue with.

I'm not a fan of having 4/5 clone midfielders Hopper,Hately,Ward,Green and fit Taranto so hope for all our sakes Williams is that different element

Yeah he does a bit of a tag and did this last year on a few players, but still usually scored well regardless. He tagged TKelly pretty well in a game. He's more of a run with player when he plays that role than a tagger though, more like Harmes or Ed Curnow, so not a pure negator.
Yeh if hes worth having ill grab him in rd12 should only get better and better as the year goes only had like 5 months of knowing the role if hes going at 90s b4 then i can see a jump spike to 105+ by seasons end especially given he is more of a high kick to hball type

You've just reminded me of the tweet you linked last night with that spreadsheet of CBAs and Wing attendances I glanced at before going to sleep. It was Oliver and his CBAs between the first Marsh series without Brayshaw and the second Marsh gave with Brayshaw. I took Oliver out but need to have a closer look at this.

I think Oliver won't be a bad starting selection looking at it from an end of season perspective. But I am fully expecting that De Boer tags him to a 55-60 in R2 so come round two he'll probably be sitting on an 85 or so average which just would feel bad but not the end of the world provided his next two rounds are back to 110

Do we think there's any chance that GWS don't deploy De Boer as a tagger this year?

Don't see why not after how successful it was last year. I think Hutchings will be the one that potentially stops tagging, think he's borderline to be picked but if so, I guess could have a matchup on Oliver as well.

Hutchings wasn’t doing much tagging last year according to the prospectus and when he did it was wingers and half-backs and not just inside mids. Can’t see him tagging that many inside mids with Kelly arriving.

I think the only counter argument to De Boer tagging would be that he wasn’t tagging much in the midfield during the Marsh series and whether they feel that him tagging doesn’t actually improve their winning capacity, or that they have too much depth to tag (which is unlikely now that they have Taranto injured)

wow

Brayshaw didn't have much impact on Petracca's CBA then.

Certainly be worth monitoring the first few games of the season to see if it stays the same.

Not for me happy with Whitfield , Lynch , Steven & Smith

My point with De Boer tagging is we see clubs who seem to have a lot of success with tagging randomly halt it. Examples include Collingwood with Greenwood, Melbourne with Harmes, Hawthorn with Howe.

There’s a price to be paid with a negative stoppage player and Essendon who had success with Dyl Clarke, were a lot worse as a midfield when we started consistently giving a midfield spot to a negative player. I don’t expect us to start the year with a tagger this year.

I still expect De Boer to tag but I don’t believe it’s a sure thing. The Club themselves would know their clearance differential with and without him. You could also argue he gives a bit more and isn’t a pure negative.

Well they did say De Boer and Coniglio would spend more time fwd so De Boer could become a defensive fwd lol
