there's never going to be a perfect world where the northern teams don't get screwed and the football states whinge about the northern academies being "to"good"

and its not like any of the northern academies pump out first round picks every single year and where was the whinging about the suns academy before this year?

sure Sydneys academy has produced good players who would not have played afl had it not been for the academy and Brisbane has had a few good picks and obviously GWS when they had the Riverina
My issue isn’t limited to Gold Coast, they are just the most and prominent example. The reality is, any compromising of the draft is a problem because it is the only equalisation measure the AFL has. It is also biased in its application because it has a special agenda behind it.

And for the record, I also hate the hand out North got as well. I think you can support clubs via alternative methods that the draft, which should remain as pure as possible. Why should Hawthorn miss out of a top 4 player despite having pick 4, just because Gold Coast could use a bunch of trash picks to get the equivalent and jump ahead?

Also the concept that you can trade away a first round pick to better get access to players in the first round is ludicrous to me. If they want to keep ensuring these clubs get access to the best players from their academies (as well as all the father-sons), the method for accessing this needs to be different.

People have been calling out the northern academy bull for years... It's just the AFL have chosen to bury their head in the sand and not do anything about making things fairer for all clubs.

First thing that the AFL must do is remove the points discount that apply to Academy picks. They are already getting priority access to these gun kids... why get a discount on top of that?

Second is that the team MUST have a live pick in the corresponding round that they match a bid in. Gold Coast would then have to of had four first round picks to select what they did last night. Make them pay a fair price for that talent.

Thirdly allow all other Clubs the same access rules to their own Academy kids. Allow them to put money into these academies knowing they will also be able to draft the players they are putting money into.

Absolutely farcical that Gold Coast get to add 4 first round academy picks, plus add future first round picks... Yet West Coast who where Fitzroy bad this year, get their second pick in the draft pushed down from 19 to 30... and didn't get access to there own academy kid in Lance Collard who was allowed to go to St Kilda... that is just nonsense.

The AFL have created a runaway train with this one.

Sydney, GWS, Gold Coast & Brisbane get a massive leg up, with the way things are currently structured.

While we are in reforming mode I would like to float an idea for any player that wishes to change clubs. The afl can assess their "market value" in terms of a draft pick(s), but instead of the afl providing the pick (thereby compromising the draft) the club to whom the FA is going should be required to acquire / provide it.

I am not a fan of the father son rule. It is a great story to have the "family tradition" continue at a particular Club but all Clubs should have access to all draft picks. Now if NM pick a draftee who had his father play for Carlton they can do so and they will understand the risk around that player -that is - in a couple of years he then wants to go to Carlton. But when the rookie contract expires and he wants to leave for Carlton then the Blues must compensate NM for the time and effort NM have invested. It could be either closest draft pick they have to the pick number NM originally used OR in cash which goes to the NM soft cap with no penalty for exceeding the limit. What compensation rules they put in place they would need to be fixed and not subject to subjective AFL opinion or be manipulated in any way. If NM used pick 5 two years ago and the closest pick Carlton have this year is pick 8, then they give up pick 8 or NM can take the cash and Carlton get to keep their pick 8.

Whatever system is used the idea of the draft was that Clubs at the bottom of the ladder get to pick early to secure the best talent they can. I agree entirely with the previous comment made, that the idea that a Club that finishes last and then has second pick at pick 30 when it should be pick 19 is just silly.

Seems to me, the 14 disadvantaged clubs only have themselves to blame.
They know GC are going to raid the top end using multiple crappy picks, and the clubs "help" them, by trading so many back end picks to them.
If you know their game, and that they're going to abuse the system, either stop helping them, or stop whining about it when they do it!!!

Yeah this is a great point. The problem is it would rely on some nerves of steel or the other 14 clubs forming a cartel. Cause otherwise when a club says “we’ll give you a top 10 pick for a bunch of crappy picks” every single club is going to want to sell the others down the river to get that deal. They probably think the only thing worse than a team cashing in on the academy is a team cashing in on the academy AND another team getting their top 10 pick!
