And first cab off the rank is … Lachie Sholl!

1640739093777.jpeg

Lot 1

Lachie Sholl + salary support

  • 21yo DEF from Adelaide
  • 1 year contract at 492k, salary support offered to reduce salary to 365k (= 2021 average x Magic Number), and add to appeal via natural progression

Highlights
  • Scored 160 in R4 (12th AFL match), two other tons to date
  • Absolutely elite runner - AFL #1 for ground covered in a game in 2021, with 3 of the top 4 games recorded league-wide (https://www.afl.com.au/news/686230/marathon-men-telstra-tracker-reveals-your-club-s-running-machines). Covered the greatest distance of all players on the ground in his first 6 games of the season.
  • Elite kick - David King: “I think this kid could be the best kick in the comp in the next 18 months, you watch him and he’s deadly by foot.”
  • Father and two uncles all played AFL, over 400 games combined
  • 12th player in AFL history to be twice nominated for the Rising Star. Was outright favourite in late April.
  • Averaged 24 disposals and 7 marks in TAC Cup. Rookie Me lists additional strengths including accumulation, intercept marking and footy smarts. Room for improvement on defensive game and contested work.
  • Doing extra work this preseason: https://www.afl.com.au/news/687268/fitter-faster-stronger-promising-crow-eyes-big-pre-season
  • Averaged 99 in his first 5 games of 2021, but later hit the wall, to average 66 for the year. What could an elite runner/kick do with another preseason under his belt?
  • Being offered to the market given depth of young mid talent pipeline at The Darkness
  • Salary support offered to take any salary concerns off the table, and provide a clear upside case to acquiring coaches from natural development

Bids open
Open now, until 5pm Saturday, January 1!

Next up is … Tom Atkins!

1640826873133.jpeg

Lot 2

Tom Atkins
  • 26yo DEF from Geelong
  • 2 years @ 401k + matching rights

Highlights
  • Performed at UL premium level* in 2021, averaging 76
  • Played for Geelong in the VFL, winning their B&F in 2016 as a forward, and was named in the VFL team of the year
  • Became a permanent midfielder and VFL co-captain in 2017, but suffered a hamstring injury that led to him missing six games. Laid 23 tackles in a game (VFL record), including 12 in one quarter (equal 2nd ever recorded by CD in any competition). Also recorded 25 disposals, 2 goals, 21 CP and 13 clearances in that game.
  • In 2018 was named Geelong’s sole VFL captain and again won their B&F. Captained the VFL team of the year as a rover.
  • 2018 VFL stats were in the top 10 in the league for contested possessions, clearances, hardball gets, handballs and score assists. #1 in the league for tackles.
  • Earned a spot in Geelong’s AFL list the following year playing predominantly as a small forward.
  • Scarlett shifted Atkins to defence in 2021 - lifted his SC average from 55-60, to 76, in his first year in a new position
  • Priced at slight discount to 2021 performance
  • Potential to shift to the midfield in time, particularly given the age of Geelong’s mids?
  • Being offered to the market due to the shift from FWD to DEF (would have been happily retained if FWD eligible)
  • Matching rights after 2 years

*With a 10 team league and 6 defenders on field, any DEF with an average in the top 60 is premium quality in UL. This assumes (conservatively) that no player misses any games, and that the top players are spread evenly across each UL list. Otherwise the premium cutoff would be reduced further.

Bids open
Open now, until 5pm Sunday, 2 Jan!

Third cab off the rank is … Brandon Starcevich (plus a sweetener)!

1640827473327.jpeg

Lot 3
Brandon Starcevich + 2022 pick 38
  • 22yo DEF from Brisbane
  • 2 years @ 217k, with matching rights thereafter

Highlights
  • Gun young defender with plenty of natural improvement to come
  • First round pick in 2017 AFL draft (number 18) as a contested bull, after winning the WA Combine 20 metre sprint, and placing 2nd in the vertical leap
  • Moved to half back in 2020
  • Came 6th in the 2020 Rising Star, polling alongside Caleb Serong, Noah Anderson, Max King, Izak Rankine, Will Day and Kosi Pickett
  • Also won Brisbane’s rookie of the year that season
  • Has developed into one of the best medium defenders in the competition, averaging 60 SC while limiting Papley, De Goey, Tippa, Walters and Gray to one goal each, and keeping Betts goalless, in early 2021.
  • Attacking game is improving: https://www.afl.com.au/news/612487/hes-a-brute-young-lion-brandon-starcevich-taming-games-elite
  • Role could become more offensive as he develops - Rookie Me lists strengths as lightning speed and versatility, with good disposal by foot, and good agility. Can play forward, midfield, wing or in defence.
  • Could also benefit from retirements, with Birchall gone and Daniel Rich aged 31 and in the final year of his contract, and/or Noah Answerth being fit again and freeing up Starcevich: https://www.afl.com.au/news/488407/a-big-smalls-problem-brandon-s-breakout-year-fixes-lions-backline-woe https://www.lions.com.au/news/1029677/noah
  • Selected on field in ESPN’s mid year All Australian side: https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_...year-all-australian-team-makes-cut-misses-out
  • Came 4th in the Lions’ Best and Fairest in 2021, ahead of Rich, Andrews and OMac
  • Named on field in the AFLPA’s 22 Under 22 side
  • Great job security, signed a 4 year deal with Brisbane in March
  • Very low UL salary and excellent JS makes Starcevich a strong option for a value D6, with good scope for upside. RFA rights help provide security of ownership longer term.
  • Cover/depth of UL squads to be even more important in 2022 given Covid issues
  • Being offered due to DEF depth at The Darkness
  • Pick 38 added to the package to sweeten the deal - seeking a better player, or higher pick, as bids than would be offered for Starcevich alone

Bids open
Open now until 5pm Sunday, January 2

With some time off over the Christmas break - and the Aussies dominating in the Ashes and cutting the Test short - my mind turned to my Ultimate League side.

I thought I might be a bit of fun to mix things up, by running an “auction” of sorts for some of my players. A few of us have a bit of extra time at the moment, and AFL lists/SC positions are settled, so it seemed like a good time for it 🙂

If it gets good interest, I’ll keep going with it, but if it doesn’t … I’ll either tinker with the setup, or let it be!

The way I suggest it will work is as follows:

  • I will list a “lot”, or item that I intend to open up for a trade. Often this will be a player, or it may involve picks, or perhaps some salary support (me paying some 2022 salary). Let’s assume it’s a player for now, for simplicity.
  • That player is someone I am open to trading. Under the auction setup, that player is likely to trade near term - so long as the bidding reaches a level I am happy to accept (essentially a reserve).
  • There will be a timeframe on the auction, likely around a week. The intention is that after that period, the player will be traded, and have a proud new owner!
  • The player doesn’t have to trade before the deadline, if there are some minor details to a deal still being worked out, but I would anticipate that whoever has placed the highest bid when the auction closes is the one I’m negotiating with (unless they withdraw, or can’t meet the reserve).
  • Bids can be submitted by PM, and can be anything you like. Draft picks will be the easiest to compare the value of, but feel free to offer a player, or some other combination (eg a player plus a pick, or a player plus salary support). I may give feedback on how appealing/otherwise a particular bid is.
  • I am generally happy to receive almost any form of consideration or value for a lot, but in general terms I am most interested in receiving things like: forwards, rucks, high draft picks in 2022, mid to high picks in 2023, and salary support from 2024 onwards. I am in a position to take on players with above market salaries in 2022, but obviously that does detract from their appeal or value as a bid.
  • I’ll give some highlights of each lot. This obviously won’t be fully comprehensive, so if you have any questions about a player or lot, please just ask.
  • I may need to tinker with the setup a little as we go, given that this is a bit of an experiment!

If you have any questions on how it will work, or suggestions for what you’d like to see, just let me know.

Hopefully it creates a bit of interest - good luck!
@KLo30 @Goodie’s Guns @Diabolical @Bomber18 @Connoisseur @Jordan’s Jets @Philzsay @Deeman1 @lappinitup

Tagging each coach to ensure everyone has had the opportunity to join in the auction if they wish.

Details of the first three players/lots up for auction are posted above, including highlights for each.

If you’d like to bid, or have any queries or suggestions, please just drop me a message.

The first auction closes on Jan 1, with the second and third closing on Jan 2.

Good luck! 🙂

To shamelessly try ride the momentum created by the Darkness, I remind everyone that D Moore 26 yo (411k salary, 1 year left) is on the table for the Rangers. Interested in a 2023 pick. ~90 avg in 2021.

Haha - ride away, I’m just trying to get a bit more trade chat going!

To call it “momentum” may be a bit generous at this stage as well 😋

I can only assume that quite a few coaches are sharpening their pencils, but it’s fair to say that there could be good value available for coaches prepared to kick off the bidding!

For those not following the BBL, a heads up on what’s happening there … Covid issues are playing havoc with player availability and the schedule.

I understand that other sports are facing similar issues.

Depth/cover will be key this AFL season!

We have seen Aussie star Travis Head contract the virus and Mitch Marsh, Josh Inglis and Nic Maddinson join the Test squad. So, to get you up to speed, this is what’s happened:

* 7 Stars players have now tested positive to the virus. They will isolate for 7 days and be unavailable until 6/1, one day before Stars vs Strikers at Adelaide Oval. They will only exit isolation and be able to return to play after a negative test.

* 4 Thunder players have tested positive too, including Alex Hales, Tanveer Sangha and Sam Whiteman. They brought a 15-man squad to Adelaide Oval so they only have 11 eligible players. They will isolate for 7 days and be unavailable until 6/1, 2 days before Thunder vs Renegades at Marvel Stadium. They will only exit isolation and be able to return to play after a negative test

* Travis Head tests positive to COVID, will miss Sydney Test. Mitch Marsh, Nic Maddinson and Josh Inglis have been added to the test squad

* Cricket Australia asked if Scorchers could play Strikers tonight at Adelaide Oval. Scorchers rejected this.

* Melbourne Stars’ next 3 games are in doubt

You may have surmised that I haven’t been overwhelmed with bids in the auction to date!

I suspect that the Covid chaos in the BBL probably hasn’t helped, but if you have any feedback on format or players, I’m happy to hear it.

It does seem to have prompted a number of ongoing trade discussions, which is good to see.

Happy to discuss if there’s anything you’re thinking about doing trade-wise!

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2022/01/20/hartletts-top-five-improvers-at-the-crows-for-2022/

Former Port Adelaide defender Hamish Hartlett has named his top five (potential) improvers at Adelaide for the 2022 season.

5. Chayce Jones
4. Harry Schoenberg
3. Wayne Milera
2. Tom Doedee
1. Billy Frampton
Hartlett: “My old mate, I really hope this is his year, Billy Frampton, my old housemate.

“He has recently made the transition down back, they’ve got a lot of very good, young key defenders the Crows (and) I think Bill, he brings something different.

“Not only is he almost 200cm - so he can play a key position role - but he can play higher up the ground because he’s got a pretty good running capacity, his skill level is just about as good as it gets for a big man and his kick is vastly underrated for mine.

“He can take the kick-ins if you need, and he’s got that intercept marking capability as well.
“I hope he can keep developing his craft as a key defender.”

The Darkness is in a position to provide a moderate amount of salary support - at the right price - to coaches looking to free up space.

This could be used to:

(1) Move an overpriced player off your list,

(2) Acquire a player from The Darkness,

(3) Acquire a player from a third party, potentially in a three-way deal, and/or

(4) Free up space to go shopping in next week’s auction!

I have a few likely excess 2022 draft picks in the R4-R8 range which I’d be interested in swapping into 2023 picks (or swapping multiple lower picks for a higher 2022 pick) - let me know if interested.

Any interest in Toby Mclean?

- 26yo
- AFL contract ends this year, potential to move clubs for more opportunity?
- FWD eligible
- UL contract 5 years @ 385k
- Recovering from LTI, 2023+ play
- Scope to cover 2022 salary given existing injury
- Averaged 110 in midfield role over the first half of 2018, 22 @ 95 for the season

Checking interest ahead of potentially seeking to place him on the LTI list (which would preclude him being traded this year).

Please let me know today/tomorrow if you have any interest.

After another big week of trading, The Darkness is interested in opening up c. 2 list spots ahead of tonight’s auction.

I have a large number of players on quite inexpensive contracts, with no player at over $520k!

This may appeal to other clubs as a way of securing a player on an affordable salary, without the competition of the auction setting, or the uncertainty of the outcome. Locking away a player in a position of need could give you greater flexibility in tonight’s bidding.

Players I would be open to trading are:

DEF
Darcy Byrne-Jones
Tom Atkins*
Oleg Markov*
Connor Budarick
Brandon Starcevich
Tom Williamson

MID
Hugh Greenwood
Quinton Narkle
Tyler Brown
Connor Blakely

FWD
Luke Breust*
Toby Mclean*
Tom Papley
Grian Miers
Jack Mahony
Billy Frampton

DPP
Will Kelly
Bailey Laurie

*Players under current/recent trade discussions, which will be given priority in the first instance.

If you are keen to acquire a player, preferably in exchange for 2023 draft picks, please PM me with ah indication of your interest and potential pricing.

Please note that I am not looking to provide salary support, but could do so partially or selectively.

Looking forward to the auction! 💰
