Shane Mumford of Sydney had a terrific SuperCoach 2011, but a poor SuperCoach 2012. Mumford has a high ceiling but is a SuperCoach risk. It's a matter of risk versus return with Mumford.

Name - Shane Mumford (SYD)
Position - RUC
Price - $486,900
Average - 91.0(14), 112.6(17), 92.6(19), 53.2(18), 21.6(3)
Draw - GWS, GCS, NTH, GEE, STK, BRL, HAW, FRE, COL, ESS, ADE, BYE, PTA

While Nic Naitanui is likely to be unavailable early in the season and since Dean Cox will be the popular pick, I know most people may not consider Shane Mumford in their initial SuperCoach team. Also with Hamish McIntosh moving to Geelong, both McIntosh and his previous teammate Todd Goldstein have also come up in a few teams. However, I think Mumford should be a consideration, even though he is unlikely to be popular with most teams.

It's funny how a year can change most people's view on Mumford. I remember Mumford was very popular at the beginning of SuperCoach 2012 with most teams being uncomfortable about selecting Cox due to his starting price of average 122.2 and with the emergence of Naitanui. People were also concerned about Goldstein and McIntosh stealing each other's points. And with Mumford having a few monster SuperCoach scores in 2011 and with the Swans having GWS in its first game, everyone wanted to jump on Mumford and use the Captain Loophole. Hell, even I selected Mumford in my starting SuperCoach team in 2012.

Obviously, things have changed for 2013 and now Cox, McIntosh and Goldstein are more tempting than Mumford.

REASONS FOR SHANE MUMFORD

The Swans have a few easily early games and so long as Mumford stays on the field and actually has some 'care factor' in his game, he could have a monster start. In 2012, Mumford has a few monster scores of 146, 159, 148, 165 and 170 hence we know Mumford has potential to have those captain-like scores, naturally with the concern of consistency.

I'm not sure what the impact of Sydney Swans winning the grand final in 2012, but note that Mumford almost missed the Flag with his hamstring injury. However, without any evidence, I believe that Mumford will possibly want to pay the Swans back for allowing him to play the grand final.

REASONS AGAINST SHANE MUMFORD

The obviously problem with Mumford is the guy is so injury prone, it's not funny. However, the days of being concerned of having late-outs are over as we now have the rolling lock out and with the extra 6 trades to 30 trades, we can always trade out Mumford. I know it's not an ideal situation, but Mumford's ceiling is quite decent.

Pike's emergence is a bit of a concern too and with Pike's decent grand final game, I think Pike will become a permanent fixture of the Swans. After half way writing this I realised that Kurt Tippett's move to the Swans could also have some impact on Mumford's SuperCoach scores. However, note that Tippett has been banned for the first 11 rounds and at that stage, Mumford may have already played his part in my SuperCoach team.

While it could be arguable that playing GWS and Gold Coast is a positive overall, on the flip-side of having a soft draw it could also have a negative impact. Interestingly, Mumford's previous record against GWS (95/93) and Gold Coast (93) isn't great, they are still solid score. Being the optimist, if Mumford has a decent pre-season, I think he will score more.

Depending on Mumford's pre-season, I am seriously considering Mumford. I'm not sure I can go through with selecting Mumford, but Mumford to Naitanui after a few games from Naitanui? Perhaps have a read of the Pinch Hitter article :)

Verdict: WATCH(3)

PS: I know most people will vote No or Unlikely, but I like to explore different options not just the popular ones

He is cheapest out of all the rucks you would consider premiums ...

For that alone he could be a good option. I would want to see a solid pre-season from him however and make sure any injury problems are a thing of the past. From memory it was reaction to an injection in his back last year that caused him problems ... not exactly a normal injury that you would be concerned about.

Watch for me.

Premium status isn't like Herpes. You don't have it for life once you get it. His Premium status was well and truly "cured" last year, and he has to win it back now, along with our trust and belief. The fact that he needed an injection in his back means he had a problem there to begin with. Back problems in big guys never completely go away. If you take him, you'll have your heart in your mouth every week you're not by your computer 20 minutes before a Swans game. I don't need the stress. That's a NO from me.

This is definitely the hardest area for me this season ... with all the ruck forward options i just can't get my head around how many ruckman to play in total ... cox is a lock for me ... then Sandilands, Ryder, Roughead, Mumford, Goldstein, Jacobs, McEvoy and the list goes on are all maybe at the moment. If NicNac was fit that would solve my problem :)

I agree. The new Ruck rules look tailor made for Nicnat, and I could see him going to Ablettesque figures this year, until this injury thing muddied the waters.

You could argue that Ryder is a similar sort of player and may also benefit ... he just seems lazy to me which makes me worried about spending around 550k + for him ...

Absolutely no love for Ryder here. Only averaged 99 after rnd 3 last year, I think he is over-hyped.

As a forward however assuming he scores the same as last year that puts him as the 5th best forward.
I think he will end up in my team in the forward line if Rockliff/Martin or someone else doesn't break into the top 6.

Agree in terms of starting him, seams a little over-hyped and expensive.

Key point there mpollock although this thread isn't about Ryder, as a R/F his average puts him right up there in the top 6-8 forwards and with his presumed improvement he's selection worthy.

For me mummy, would be in there as a pinch hitter with his early few games and although he's numbers are not that impressive, he still has the potential to tear a game apart and worst case scenario ton up. His durability is a real concern though so i would want to see him burning in the preseason.

Great article Jay once again!!!
U mentioned the pinch hitter. I think it could be an option from rounds 1 to 11 with the good early draw. Also, Pyke will probably play more up forward when Tippet is out. Just wondering what Sydney's line up will look like when Tippet comes back? They will have Reid , LRT and Tippet up forward with Mumford in the ruck. That's ignoring Goodes as well who may play midifeld at that point. Where does that leave Pyke? Surely he can't play as well?

i voted likely, had him all preseason. hes an amazing SC point scorer when fit, and so far so good this preseason. If he gets injured, i'll trade him out, with 30 trades hes worth the risk

I selected Unlikely, but it's probably a No now that I think about it even further. Would rather spend the extra $10K on Goldstein and be Injury Safe.

No. Once bitten, twice shy....

And the fact that I have a handful of ruckmen I'd prefer to get before him.
