Some coronavirus impact related thoughts I had (assuming we continue this season without crowds):
- Rookie bench coverage will be more important than ever. I can definitely see players with cold like symptoms (i.e. sore throats) being self-isolated for 1-2 weeks and missing random weeks e.g. Kane Richardson missed the ODI with a sore throat. Expect to see players randomly missing. I hope clubs are open about the reasons for missing.
- Players randomly missing for precautionary testing might also help rookies with poor JS (i.e. an Ash type). We may get enough cash growth out of those poor JS rookies named in Round 1.
- No crowds may help players who like to "run down tackle". Crowds make a lot of noise when players are about to be dispossessed, I'm sure some players would listen out for this and rush a disposal to avoid getting caught HTB. D.Smith type may benefit. The more "pressure" focused teams may generally benefit as well (i.e. the Tigers).
- Home grounds may not be as advantageous as they were before. Crowd noises I'm sure would influence umpires. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
- If some of the suggestions go forward regarding "mini drafts", we may see a lot of downgrade options (although potentially with poor JS).
The fun and games will continue until a player or a club support staff end up being confirmed as infected. I think at that point the AFL season would have to be called off for the year.
SC would be more vulnerable to being cancelled in any case as I'm not sure the administrators can cope with games being modified. Could turn into a week by week comp with weekly prizes but who knows. Maybe its best 18 every week....?
Anyway, as it stands, Round 1 games will go ahead and teams will drop on Thursday night. So at the very least, we will see the results of our preseason research play out for at least one round and perhaps have lessons learnt for future seasons.
