What's the thinking (for a newbie) on picking a $50K starter (or two) to facilitate taking an expensive pick(s)?

Most weeks that sort of thing will be necessary.

As mentioned last year, I am happy to be an experimental guinea pig to test any weird or wonderful ideas.

Decided I would give this a go this time round. Think I have some idea of the strategy to use based on reading through the Spring season posts, but guess we'll find out tomorrow for sure.

For those unfamiliar with these tables, it calculates the probable points scored, based purely on the current odds.

These horses are expected to score 18 points, or higher.

These are the horses priced $10 or shorter, that have the best points/dollars. ie the best value picks.

The best team, according to the tables above: Totals 240 points + Jockey score.

Our Spring hero, JMac, is expected to be the highest scorer.
I'm leaning towards D Dunn though. He has one extra ride, and has 6 rides expected to score 1.0 or higher, where JMac only has 4.

After 4 horses have run I'm sitting on 86 points against my expected score of 71, so happy to be ahead of schedule!
D Dunn 2 rides for 2 3rds has him just ahead of schedule too.

Well done. 5 down for me, no duds yet, all have run top 3. Can't complain.

Made 2 changes to my stable after seeing your tables this morning, one of which has scored me 12 extra pts (the others haven't raced yet). Thanks for that!

Report from a newbie. 5 horses down, 1 dud (Supreme Idea). The 4 to come are Regal Power, Standout (C), Gytrash and Reloaded. Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.

Currently 127 v Jasons' 193.

Didn't realise how deep the scoring is - down to tenth. Now I see why small fields are so appealing.

Yep, D Dunn sitting on 10 with 4 rides to come, and 3 of them good ones.
He looks to be the Jockey pick of the day.

I knew Standout was a risk on a wet track, but I hoped/expected better than that!
Bad Captain choice has sucked the jam out of my donut.

Had the same captain choice, figured a 7 horse G1 field, very good chance to run top 3. Looked like it was eased up in the straight though, so it may have got injured? Could have been worse, but not a good result, my good start seems a long way away now.

All done, except for a few rides from D Dunn.
Was predicted to score 245, and sitting on 244!

Bivouac only in 6% of teams, so that's a bonus.
Exceedence finished 6th, and was in 19% of teams, Gytrash 3rd in 15%.

I think par will be around 230, but there will be some high scores.
I'm guessing we could see a 340 or 350 lead the day.
