Almost impossible to get a read on Oliver's injury and a time frame for his return. Its gone from 2-3 weeks to short term and now on the AFL site the word "indefinitely" has been printed.

QUOTE "Oliver will be sidelined indefinitely after scans confirmed a hamstring strain".

But was reported to be running on Monday.???

Low on trades "2 weeks" is ok but indefinitely never sounds good.

👍 Marcus Bontempelli (AF $958k SC $707k MID) - knee

@WesternBulldogs coach Luke Beveridge: "The alarm bells always go off when any of your players need attention during the game. He's OK, he'll train today & we think he's going to be fine to front up against Gold Coast." #AFL

🤔 Clayton Oliver (AF $990k SC $658k MID)

@MelbourneFC coach Simon Goodwin: "It's a minor (hamstring) strain. We're going to build him through that process. How long that takes, we're unsure. We'll give him every chance in the next few weeks. We're going to be very cautious."

I think the Melbourne football club will be extremely cautious on confirming Olivers return to football. The worry is Oliver coming back too soon and tearing his hamstring.

My guess is round 13 a week before his bye. That would give Oliver 3 weeks to recover from a hamstring strain.

I don’t think Olivers return will be round 15 after the bye, as this means he would be sidelined for 5 weeks. A very long time out due to a strain.

I actsully think the other way, why bring Oliver back for round 13, knowing it’s only one game and he can refresh and reset with the bye the following week….
last thing any team wants to do is bring a player back slightly underdone and have it backfire…

Having said that Oliver is unique in that he has missed one game in six years, has ability to play with niggles so he may be ready by round 13…

I was thinking about this, but Oliver is a genuine Brownlow chance so I'd be surprised if this wasn't a factor.

One thing I've noticed this and last season, is that the traditional time frames around certain injuries like hamstrings and knees are being challenged. I heard them talking about it yesterday on the radio that the medical teams are more in tune with regards to awareness/diagnosis of injuries earlier and improved recovery programs. I'm not saying Oliver won't miss 3 or even 4 with the bye but what makes me nervous is that I wouldn't be surprised if Oliver played this weekend or missed only 1. These are literally flip the coin type decision now for supercoaches in terms of keep or trade.

I wouldn’t count the 2 finals he has played as we don’t get scores out of that during the standard season….
averaging only average 17 games in past 5 years….
But if you are assessing his “durability” then shouldn’t finals be included, as well as all absences identified throughout the years in question and separated between contact and non contact injuries, identifying the possible rate of recurrence for each injury and recovery time compared to the recommended timeframe, comparing the games missed relative to the competition, etc?
