You mentioned you saved it one One Drive. If you logon to One Drive via the web can you see it there?

No. I've tried looking there. I've tried searching my PC.
I know it's risky, as I've never heard of it, but I'm currently running Disk Drill to try and find it.

Disk Drill didn't find it either.
I think I just have to accept that it has disappeared forever, and I just have to do my best to reconstruct it.
Thank you all for your suggestions and help.

This sounds very frustrating @Rowsus! I’m guessing you have tried using an automated search for various strings located within the file itself?

I would be surprised if there wasn't a way to recover or find the file or at least a recent version of it but without seeing exactly the issues you are having it is hard to know what to suggest next. Do you have a friend or colleague who is good at that sort of stuff that could do a bit more forensic search?

If it is absolutely critical to recover the file I would be happy to set up some type of electronic meeting with you and you can demonstrate the problem to see if I can help. That is not guarantee that i will be able to though.

Not sure it helps, but if it's been on onedrive at some point, Microsoft have some measures to try and recover it.

Yes. It's an annual file that I start again every March. Part of it is new, part of it is a continuation of the file I just stopped.
The file that is missing is called FQ Bal 2023. The previous iterations were just FQ Bal 2022, FQ Bal 2021 etc. . Within that file I have some simple things saved like my Netflix password etc. When I search my files for "Netflix", FQ Bal 2022, FQ Bal 2021, FQ Bal 2020 all pop up as containing Netflix. No FQ Bal 2023, which was sort of the last nail in the coffin, that made me think I'll never find it.

@Beg2Differ, @KLo30, @Darkie, @jel, @Ironhawk

Thank you all very much!!!! (y)(y):D:D:cool::cool:

Combining different pieces that you all suggested, I have managed to restore a version that is 7 days old!!!
So easy for me to update, especially compared to the 3 months of updates I was looking at.
Without each of you giving me suggestions, and in the process getting me to cling onto hope, I would never have gotten this version back.
You have no idea what a relief this is. I owe you all a beer or three!!!

That’s excellent news! Happy to have played a small part.

Take the beers off the ones we probably all owe you 🙂

Glad you found your file, couldve been some grumpy syndicate members or happy if they didn't have pay up. 🤣

Dont know how you save your data, as there are many ways to save them.
You mentioned you email to yourself, which is one way.
Maybe cloud storage? Personally thats not for me, with on going fees!
Attach a hard drive to the computer, you can either copy and paste monthly, or use file history which is still available on Win11. I find this good as a back up.
nothing worse than losing data, except trying to find it after the main file has disaapeared 🤣 Ask me how I know!
That was back in the day, now I have a NAS hard drive for all the files; Movies, TV series, Music, Photos and work files(self employed), etc. Copy them to a hard drive attached to the NAS. All work files are dragged and dropped to my computer every week or so which is then backed up by file history on a seperate hard drive.

Its one thing to get on top of though before its too late, imho.

Thanks for the reply.
I have 5 important XL files on my computer, which combined are less than 100MB. Everything else is "expendable".
Since my near disaster I've gotten better at remembering to get do email back ups to 2 different sources.

There are some free cloud storage options if you're not storing large amounts of data.
Google Drive = 15Gb (shared with Gmail & Google photo)
Dropbox = 2Gb
Microsoft = 5Gb
iCloud = 5Gb
There may be others as well

Yeah I was thinking @Rowsus might have a fair bit of data, but at 100Mb he could use 4 or 5 USB dongles to hold it, a dongle at work, at home, at the inlaws, etc 🤣 unlike me with ~4.5 Gb and still haven’t got it all the NAS yet.😢
But the main reason to keep it in-house and not use cloud services including the cost, is the customer details etc. that we hold. Don’t want to risk a data breach, and the best way to me was to keep it all in-house.
I do use Microsoft for excel, word, etc and have a google gmail account, but never got into google sheets/numbers etc so felt it all to much mucking around to transfer it over.
