Firstly, commiserations to anyone who has clicked on and is interested in this thread in June.
So it seems like this is my admission that the 2023 season for me is just about done and dusted.
A series of unfortunate events, leading to further poor decisions has been the final nail in the coffin it seems.

On to 2024!
For those of you in a similar boat, I'm interested in your locks, hopeful/speculative picks and 'never agains!'

For me:

LOCKS:
N Daicos - Gun, demands the pill, laughs off the tag, love watching him play.
Walsh - If he gets his body right, comes at a reasonable discount.
Touk - (See Walsh)
English? Seems one of the only rucks who can score consistently high. Helped by a dominant midfield and no ruck sharing.

Speculative Picks:
K Coleman - some injury concerns this year, has been the sub and hasn't looked quite right. I'm bullish on him going forward though.
Gulden/Warner - Expecting both of these blokes to explode, coinciding with a big jump from the Swans. Thought it would be this year to be fair. If by some miracle Gulden gets fwd status back, he'll be a lock for me.
Hobbs/Perkins - Similar boat here, probably 1-2 years behind though. I expect Perkins to be a better long-term scorer, but Hobbs to 'breakout' first. Might be 2025 though.
Bailey Smith - Surely it's time to phase out Treloar (and possibly Libba soon enough) and get Bazlenka into the guts. Can't be far off! I had thought he'd benefit from Dunkley being out, but Bevo has run with Caleb Daniel of all people and then rotated the whole squad through :rolleyes:
Will Day - New contract locked in, I think he goes very big soon enough.
Ward - If he gets forward status I'll try to grab him at the first sign of him going bang.

Never Again:
Never say never I guess, but the following are on very thin ice:
Steele - has burnt me twice this year. My own fault.
Grundy/Gawn - Ruck points not as huge as a few years back, ditto for any other team with a ruck share.
Callum Mills - Edited - He probably deserves another chance at some stage ;)
*Any premium-priced players over 30 and/or with durability concerns*

Interestingly, looking at the bye break up makes it even more complicated! (Round 0 in RED)
Rnd 12: Bris (2), GWS (3), Nth, Syd (5)
Rnd 13: Fre, Port
Rnd 14: Car (2), Ess, Geel, GC (3), Melb (6), WC
Rnd 15: Ade, Coll (5), Haw, Rich (6), StK, WB

Just on this:-
"Callum Mills - Glory days are seemingly gone. Downward spiral for too long."

He is currently 26 years old, in his prime as a footballer.

Career averages :-

116.6 avg just last year... not sure about that downward spiral for too long

Average of 97.75 the first 8 rounds before the early calf injury - horse moved him back to play as a key defender with all the injuries to the swans key defenders. I remember when he had to match up on Tom Hawkins in 1 game

High on my radar for next year personally - pending his preseason, will be very underpriced.

Depending on what happens in the second half of the season but think Mills and Steele would be top of my list for next year at discounted prices.

I’m a sucker for punishment and will likely start Darcy again. Feel as though he has a 120-130 season in him and is worth the injury risk.

Look, your response is perfectly reasonable and very much clashes with my levels of salt having grabbed him in a draft league 😂
It's obviously been a long season haha.

I do also seem to recall a drop at the end of 2022 from his first half, but I could be making that up too, will check when I get home.

Who are the M/Fs who, once they lose DPP, will sachet off into the forgotten land and somehow not make many starting sides at all?

Butters, Dunkley and Tarranto have outscored every mid bar Bont, Petracca and perhaps Laird (game in hand) to this point. Absolute guns.

I'm looking at the following players as locks for next year -

Backs - Stewart and N Daicos
Mids - Oliver, Bont, Laird & Dunkley (consider underpriced players as 5th - Miller/Steele/Mills)
Rucks - English (consider Nic Nat if fit at start of year as my 2nd ruck with a R/F up forward as coverage)
Forwards - MacCrae & Gawn if R/F.

Still a fair bit of 2023 to play out but it's never too late to start planning.
