Not trying to talk you out of him but Laird does usually start the season slowly. Think his pre-bye averages are usually quite a bit lower than post-bye. I love Laird but I think I'm gonna pass on any Adelaide mids until I see how the new mid rotations affect them. With Laird + Libba + Bont you also have 3 mids from the same R15 bye, and I assume you'll also want Dawson at some point too, so something to consider.
I agree with all three points. My problem is that there is no one else I really like in his stead. Green is such a perfect upgrade after his second bye. Although reality is, if Green doesn't have the round 3 bye he is probably the better selection. It's best 18 and the only other premium I have is Flanders that round, so maybe it doesn't matter if he misses. Not many players averaging 116 plus in each of the last 3 seasons though.

I would have Green too if not for the bye. I've personally gone LDU for that M2/M3 premium spot. His ceiling is enormous if he stays on the park, his role is safe as houses and he's got a good bye, but he does carry a bit of risk. I don't think there's anything wrong with Laird; every premium mid this year seems to have question marks and he's one of the safer choices, although I don't think he has much upside.

Had LDU for most of the pre-season but that last match put me off a bit. High upside without a doubt. Also suprised to see that Merrett's pre bye average was 112 last year (thought it was lower). Another who is clearly defined in his role. Adding Goldstein likely helps him too.

With Merrett, gotta watch out for that likely Maginness tag in R1 and maybe a Rowbottom tag in R2, especially with no Parish. Essendon also have a pretty tough run R2-R7 which is why I haven't really considered Merrett as a starter. Will be a good one to bring in closer to mid-season I think.

Yep, always get a few poor games when tagged and can get cheap if a few close together. Definitely an upgrade option.

Its just the injury risk with LDU, especially when hes a POD if he gets hurt early in a game we are in real trouble picking him.

True, although if I don't go with LDU, I most likely run with Laird who is even less ownership (less injury risk however). Not a lot I like outside those two due to byes etc.

I've gone Laird because I can be fairly comfortable I'll get what I paid for. But there's not upside there.

I’ve locked in LDU and hope that he can start the season strong and if he gets injured, pray it’s late in a game so his score doesn’t suffer too much because of it!
I’ve had him in my side for most of the preseason and his ownership percentage dropping from the mid-high teens down to 7% has made me want him even more.
I’m not usually a massive fan of POD’s as there’s usually a good reason why they aren’t heavily selected but I’m hoping LDU can break the trend!

I know it's just one week and all but:

Top 10 most expensive players and where they ranked in round 1:

1. Bont (24)
2. English (33)
3. Oliver (65)
4. Petracca (34)
5. Laird (27)
6. Merrett (22)
7. Daicos (11)
8. Liberatore (101)
9. Dawson (143)
10. Dunkley (48)

There's a few one-off scores in that list so when I come back to it in coming weeks, I'll just go by averages. Bad news for Dunkley as he drops to 57th spot. Oliver drops to 80th and Daicos rises to 9th.

Top 10 most expensive players at the start and where they ranked after round 3:

3 round average*:
1. Bont (15)
2. English (10)
3. Oliver (90)
4. Petracca (22)
5. Laird (24)
6. Merrett (6)
7. Daicos (61)
8. Liberatore (58)
9. Dawson (144)
10. Dunkley (50)

* I've gone for 3 round average to try and give us the best comparison. The total points given by the product includes round 0 scores, making Bont, English and co look worse than they've been since the comp opened this year

Guessing Zerrett will be terrible in the second half of the year then

I feel for Dawson owners. Sucks massively when guys like that score like that.
There but for the grace of God....

He spent a long time in my mids over summer. You know... because Laird is getting so old.

I'll do this exercise again maybe after the round 6 bye when everyone's had the same number of games. Too hard to split the results up to ignore round 0 results.

I can already see though how this season could be a little different in that there might be a changing of the guard occurring. Neale and Laird up in the 30s while there is a big push from guys we've been waiting on like Butters and Green who you would expect to be mainstays for the next 5 years or more. Serong has probably moved into that group in the last 12 months too. Heeney finally getting played in position is a surprise but at 28 years old next month, he wouldn't be spending too long at the absolute pinnacle. Hell, with Horse in charge, he might start to drop off as soon as next week

I'd think that Bont and Merrett have another couple of years in the mix and Petracca is 28 now too so in 2 or 3 years they will probably have been replaced in the top 10. English should be good for a while. Gulden? Sheezel?

Forgot to look at this last week. Work got a bit big on me

By average (Ranking, Average, Games played, +/- $)
1. Bont (13, 116, 7, -$110,600)
2. English (16, 114.9, 7, -$123,800)
3. Oliver (131, 82.6, 7, -$207,900)
4. Petracca (28, 108.9, 7, -$73,600)
5. Laird (23, 110.6, 7, -$90,600)
6. Merrett (8, 124.3, 7, -$10,100)
7. Daicos (18, 113.6, 7, $57,800)
8. Liberatore (21, 112.2, 5, -$24,200)
9. Dawson (53, 100.6, 7, %-89,400)
10. Dunkley (25, 110.3, 7, $-43,100)

By total points (Ranking, points, Games played, +/- $)
1. Bont (12, 813, 7, -$110,600)
2. English (15, 804, 7, -$123,800)
3. Oliver (101, 578, 7, -$207,900)
4. Petracca (24, 762, 7, -$73,600)
5. Laird (20, 774, 7, -$90,600)
6. Merrett (7, 870, 7, -$10,100)
7. Daicos (17, 795, 7, $57,800)
8. Liberatore (117, 561, 5, -$24,200)
9. Dawson (42, 704, 7, %-89,400)
10. Dunkley (22, 772, 7, $-43,100)

Maybe this year is a bit of an outlier or something but it does look to me like we were best off avoiding last year's top 10 to start

I won’t be surprised it Warner, Rowell, and Blakey are All Australians this year, and if all make then jump to top 10 in their line, but at this stage I’ve got none of them.
Maybe next year, I repeat this exercise and actually pick the players. Warner and Rowell both currently top 10 mids, Blakey the 11th best defender.
