The secret sauce at the AFL weights the points value of free agents highest when they are 25 years old (!)

Ben McKay and Essendon have done us a huge favour; the former by being the right age to game the system; the later by paying (way?) too much for a just-above-journeyman player because he's tall.

This is a very good question. Especially as Schultz is contracted, right? That in theory should give the club more power.

I don’t think it would have been a problem for most if not for the undeserved assistance picks that were recently given to north. When you couple them both together, it really rubs a large majority of AFL supporters the wrong way. All teams see themselves at the bottom from time to time. Too much given to fill in a hole that was dug by the club.

Make the compensation formula visible and we avoid all this crap.

I agree with most of this. I personally don't like hand outs and look forward to the day we are back completing due to our own good work, but the AFL have set the precedent in the past, so clubs wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't ask.
Compensation at a minimum needs to be made public and even a step further is to remove all comp/father son etc etc picks until after the first round.
What I really haven't enjoyed seeing is North get bashed for playing by the AFLs rules

SYDNEY has added a hard edge to its midfield, completing a deal with Collingwood to land Magpies vice-captain Taylor Adams.

As AFL.com.au reported on Sunday, Adams requested a trade to the Swans, with the deal going through on Wednesday in exchange for pick No.33.

Adams played 23 games this year but missed the Magpies' Grand Final win due to injury. He was also injured during Collingwood's finals campaign last year.


Adams had one year left on his contract at the Pies but is set to pen a three-year deal at the Swans.

The Swans have already added free agents James Jordon and Joel Hamling this off-season, while just moments before the Adams deal welcomed out-of-favour Melbourne ruckman Brodie Grundy.

BRODIE Grundy is officially a Sydney player, joining the Swans from Melbourne.

The Demons have received pick 46 in this year's draft as well as Sydney's second-round pick next year in exchange for sending the ruckman to the Harbour City.

It is Grundy's third club in the space of 12 months having moved from Collingwood to the Demons 12 months ago.

The two-time All-Australian arrives at the Swans having played 194 games across the two clubs, including four finals campaigns.

Sydney footy manager Charlie Gardiner said Grundy will be a strong addition to the club.

"We're excited to be able to bring Brodie to Sydney – he is an outstanding person and an elite ruckman in the competition, and will be a fantastic addition to our club," Gardiner said.

"We worked closely with Melbourne to facilitate the trade and we look forward to seeing Brodie in the red and white in 2024."

Grundy was offloaded by Collingwood to Melbourne at the end of last year for salary-cap reasons, with the ruck teaming up with fellow star big man Max Gawn at the Demons in a blockbuster move.

However, Melbourne functioned better in the second half of the season with Gawn as the sole ruckman, leaving Grundy without a spot.

The 29-year-old managed just one more game (in round 22) after being dropped from the Demons' side after round 17.

Not sure I understand the steak knives Melbourne threw in with pick 14 and pick 11 swap. Especially when you look at what Adelaide then paid for pick 14!
It's like Melbourne are saying the quality of the draught drops off a cliff after picks 11 or 12.
I will watch with interest how picks 11 and 14 pan out during the draft!
Melbourne usually have a bit more savvy than that, so maybe there is reason behind the madness!

You're right... it's the constant hand outs over several years now that have rubbed everyone the wrong way. North are always holding their hands out asking for more, even the coach was in the media campaigning for Pick 3 just the other week.... that rubs people the wrong way, especially when those handouts then push every other clubs picks further back.

There is something like 15 round picks on North's list... before you even add in the first round picks for the next 2 years... that's far more than any other team, so elite talent isn't the problem.

North do need some assistance, but a far more appropriate assistance package would have been more soft cap space to hire more and better development coaches to make the most of that elite talent already on the list. That would not have affected any other club's picks and I don't think many would any issue with that type of assistance.

Also getting rid of an experienced key position player like McKay when you are already short on key position players isn't going to make North better next year... North made no real effort to try an keep him.

I said it earlier that I think compensation picks need to go... but I agree with you that at a very minimum all priority, compensation and father/son picks need to be from the second round onwards. Have a completely uncompromised first round every draft.
