I am not sure how to word this, but I am struggling to work out the best way to approach players from teams on the early bye.
I can see the attraction in Daicos due to his DPP and his potential to average better than last year. Best 18 on his bye helps the week that he misses too - in a common 13-9 GnR on field structure, the Best 18 means that we just need our best 5/9 rookies, which is a potential advantage this year to those who play their cards well so early in the season. If we have Daicos, we lose a premium but could use his DPP donut value that round to bring another 2 rookies into play (looking at a bench Def and mid rookie) meaning we need our best 6/11 rookies - so the points loss due to him not playing may not be significant.
Gawn and Grundy also look great value. The issue with them is if we don’t have a playing ruck rookie at R3 or a DPP ruck in the forwards to swing into the rucks we miss the advantage of using them as a loop and we can only take the best 6/8 rookies. Any premium with an early bye who is not DPP could have a similar effect to our team. However if they are good enough value, the points loss when they have a bye may not be that great.
However, I think I am leaning towards prioritising focusing on the early bye rookies, or perhaps mid pricers, over the premiums. Round 0 certainly gives a great advantage to look at their role in the team before we select them. They should also be handy players to use as loopholes early on - something that makes me less inclined to start a dedicated donut this year. If I understand correctly, their R0 score will count towards price changes, so by R6 all rookies will have potentially played the same amount by of games, which is typically when we want to be upgrading.

I am trying to work out the best approach also, essentially the same dilemmas you are currently having.
Just on the the DP ruck to swing up from the fwd, Luke Jackson is the one & Freo have the best draw along with Port fantasy wise - he was best on at match sim today used as a midfielder not just as a ruck 😉

FREMANTLE ruckman Sean Darcy took a significant step in his push to be available for the start of the season, joining match simulation training for the first time on Friday as he works back from ankle surgery.
Darcy, whose season was ended after round 18 last season, has so far been restricted to the Dockers' rehab group, but the important big man joined the final 30 minutes of match play at the Dockers' Cockburn training base.
Rather than going head-to-head with Luke Jackson, however, the Dockers took the opportunity to play Jackson as an onballer in a standout burst from the 199cm big man.
Jackson, who had already been prominent as a ruckman through the first two periods, which lasted 10 and 20 minutes respectively, lined up on Neil Erasmus as a ground-level midfielder, laying several chase-down tackles, using his size to mark on the wing, and pushing forward to kick a goal.

I was thinking of getting Jackson in to help cover Grawndy during the byes as well as coverage if one of them have a short term 1-2 week injury. This will allow you to have one of your forward rookies to play in round 5-6 for their early byes to give you extra body to make up your best 18 and hopefully give you a 60+. The main question for me is will Jackson be a top 6-8 forward come seasons end. I think definitely if Darcy is out for long periods and Jackson becomes number 1 ruck or they play him as a big bodied mid but other than those two scenarios I'm unsure. How do they fit Seeing, Brayshaw plus Young who is supposedly playing pure mid plus Jackson in their midfield with Darcy as number 1 ruck? I have him in at the moment.

I have always found this strategy poorly delivers on expectations. Sub optimal forward usually the result.
They either play all games like English last year when you don't expect it or become injured like Gawn and need trading.
Sometime easier just to deal with it at the time.
Best 18 does give some protection early on.

I guess it depends on team structure, but if there is a playing R3 then you have to weigh up Jackson plus a non playing R3 donut vs a playing R3 and another forward premium. It doesn’t necessarily matter if you have no ruck premium as long as the team is structured up right on the other lines.
For me, if you think Jackson is a top 6-8 forward it makes sense. But if you don’t, then setting up your whole team for ruck cover in 1 round by taking a compromised pick is madness.
FWIW, I have Jackson currently but that’s because I see him scoring well and also love the ability to have flex in trades. If Gawn/Grundy gets injured it’s not always easy to sideways to another viable ruck, but temporarily seining Jackson up means I can get a player from another line. That said.. a lot will come down to teams and role, because if he’s only pinch hitting in the ruck he has a very low ceiling until Darcy injures himself!
