As usual finding this time of year dangerous. After considering early byes, role changes and improvers have come up with a basic backbone of core players. However too easy to now find myself being seduced by the sirens song of mid pricers flashing their wares in questionable scratch matches. Must resist turning my existing team into a quagmire of failed mid pricers. Must resist. But need to keep reading these great match reports and posts lest I miss something that really is worthwhile.

Must resist. Must resist. Keep telling myself this as I work the numbers out to see if I can fit Nick Martin into my mids, or maybe Wardlaw or maybe......

It's hard to resist someone fairly cheap who looked really good and racked up plenty of ball haha, I think this happens every year, also harder to resist when they appear more comfortable and competent in their new role at their new club.

Adelaide
Three period thoughts for Pies/Crows; big list rotation after the third quarter/period, especially for Adelaide

PORT:
Notable absentees: Marshall, Drew
Pretty full strength, although Adelaide largely were too.

Bergman - Was nearly entirely wing today, with Jones playing well in defence. Looks like they are still working out who accompanies Boak on the other wing, with Bergman either playing wing (Jones/Sinn defence) or defence himself (Burgoyne wing). Burgoyne did basically nothing today so I assume they'll run with Bergman.

Rozee - Moved to #1, was quiet for patches. They are rotating one of Rozee/Butters/JHF/Wines forward more (at least in the pre-season/training) to accomodate Wines in the middle. Probably bad for all of them but JHF was forward the most I'd say

Wines - Played well.. I guess is fantasy relevant but not particularly on my radar due to age/injury history/Port's stacked mids. Won't be on the wing this season

Butters - Quiet first quarter, racked it up Q2, dropped a sitter and got caught HTB in Q3... Strong option still

Soldo - Thought ROB smashed him in the first quarter.. Was probably more even throughout the day.. I thought Sweet looked way better but doesn't seem they will go that way.

Sweet - Looked a heavier body than Soldo and competed with ROB more I thought. I think will get games throughout the year, not sure if worth starting him even if he doesn't get the Round 1 gig?

Jones - Defence - Played well, pushes Bergman to wing. Assume he's competing with Sinn (who did not play the first 3 periods but came on in the weaker team in Q4) but Jones played really well so probably has the spot for now

Burgoyne - Back to the drawing board for me, I can't see him getting the gig on the wing. Maybe a sub candidate as I'm not sure who their 3rd winger would be when Bergman/Boak are resting.

JHF - Started deep forward but had midfield rotations. I have to assume was 4th from the big 4 mids in terms of CBA's. Not of particular interest to me

Houston - Looked good. I wonder if the addition of BZT/Esava will give him more disposals, since they will bring the ball to ground more / intercept more. Was quiet in Q3 but still did enough to keep me interested

Farrell - Took some kick-ins, think he had some wing time

Burton - Took some kick-ins, 2 big goals from outside 50

Esava - Just looked ok, a few intercepts

Dixon - Nice mark and goal, maybe his demise was exaggerated

Boak - Think he came on at the start of Q2. Was pure wing except for 1CBA. Wing this season and looked fine.

Mead - Had a CBA in Q2, and a few touches.

Sinn - Didn't play first 3 quarters, I didn't watch to see how he went in the weaker hitout. Seems behind Lachie Jones currently.

SPP - Nearly forgot to mention his collision with Keane. Haven't analysed it much but Keane went off with concussion. Not sure if there's a suspension or not, I'd lean yes
------------------------------------
ADEL:
Notable absentees: Sloane, Milera, Butts, Schoenberg, Murray, Soligo
Largely full strength, but still missing a few. Think they'd be happier of the two sides today marginally.

Jones - Was on the wing today, just ok.. Doesn't feel like anyone has grabbed the wing spots at Adelaide

Dawson - Honestly hard to judge the game, was forward for a bit. Always looks good as he gets the most marks out of the Adelaide mids.

Laird - Was his usual self but I felt Crouch was the standout mid of the big 3

Rankine - Opening bounce CBA but didn't do much in the first. Goal of the day in the 2nd. Had a big third quarter, with three centre clerances in a row to start the term, then missed a set shot up forward, but got on the end of an easy one late too. It feels like he will get the most midfield time between the three of Rachele, Pedlar and himself. Definitely on my radar, even if he's the fourth centre bounce midfielder at 25-35% CBA's.

Thilthorpe - Probably takes another step forward this year, was clunking marks and kicking straight

Crouch - I thought he looked great, no sign of any hand injury reported during the week. Clean, racked it up, can't play anywhere else except pure midfield which is a nice "weakness" to have :sneaky: - I'm putting him back in my teams after today

Keane - First intercept mark of game, huge collision/bump with SPP early - concussion and did not return

Fog - Played well, nice goals

Sholl - On a wing.. Was good in the first quarter but quiet after that.. Soligo has an ankle injury I believe so may see Sholl/Jones on the wings if Soligo isn't ready for Round 1.

Hinge - Carried on from back half of 2023. I'm not seriously considering him but looked good if you were

Berry - Felt like he was pretty average. Maybe I'm biased and don't want him in the 23 so he doesn't eat into Crouch's midfield time :ROFLMAO:
I don't think he will though. But he is good depth to have when any of Crouch/Laird or even Dawson miss games

Rachele - A few CBA's but mostly forward where he was good. I'd be surprised if he got anything other than a sprinkle of CBA's.

Curtin - Came onto the ground mid-way through Q2, possibly because Keane got concussed. Not a stand-out to me, be interesting to see if Keane is ok for next week. I'd be surprised if he plays over Keane, have your emergency plans ready :censored:

Athomas final thoughts:
Geez, the SA teams are pretty fantasy relevant. Rozee/Butters/Houston all options.. arguably Wines too but not for me. I wouldn't touch Soldo but probably hard to find the money for Sweet if he doesn't play Round 1; I think it's an outside chance. Burgoyne/Sinn are off the table for me (I guess they have another week to change my mind, but they may not even make the starting teams next week)

Crouch is my preferred Adelaide premium but nothing wrong with Dawson and to a lesser extent Laird. Rankine will be all the buzz today, see how he looks next week. Hinge was fine, but I'm skeptical on Curtin playing Round 1 personally!
Any thoughts on Michalanney ?

Crouch's time on ground was low last year. He knows how to rack up points but who's to say he gets more minutes?????
I don't think he'll get anymore tog, he's an aging one trick pony, inside mid and they'll play to his strengths which will be burst in and under. Crows have got flexibility now in the midfield, not sure Crouch can go anywhere else. I expect his ppm will be high but SC score might be limited by the tog.

It's between him and Martin for a spot for me. One won't be a keeper but may increase in price quickly, the other could end up a D5-6 keeper.
