I'm probably misunderstanding, but I thought the key query over Roberts was JS rather than scoring potential. Last night didn't really change much in the way we thought he'd score/his role, but are we now perhaps saying he doesn't have a JS hurdle to clear either?

Probably a little bit of both.

We hadn't seem him with Lloyd in the team. Lloyd mostly played wing last night, but there were also times Cuningham/Roberts/Blakey seemed to (if only we had official wing stoppage numbers lol)

I think in the short term there's not much to worry about anyway, it will be interesting to see if anything changes when Sydney get Parker/Adams back, as that may push some out some players from midfield to wing, and have a flow on effect of cutting one defender too.

After the Darcy/Jackson news I flirted with the idea of no Grundy

Now he's a VC candidate for his Collingwood revenge game

Really impressive night
Reg already had his revenge game against us last year. His mob got home by 4 points in front of 83,000 people and he had 26 taps and kicked an important goal. Some of the army booed, sure, but the rest of us thought "yeah, probably fair enough."

We're ok with it though. The moment he left, freeing up a bunch of coin, we secured an inside midfielder who probably came 5th or so in the Norm Smith voting (24 stats, 13 tackles, 7 clearances 139 SC points) in another game decided on the G by 4 points. Only this game was in front of a touch over 100k people and they gave us a cup at the end of it.

Win-win.

Yeah or does Reg have a 10 year history of constantly running bigger, stronger ruckman into the ground and cashing in late in games.

It's his 1 wood and he's very, very good with it.

Reg's kryptonite are the athletic ones, the double teamers and humidity. Proper tall ones can get him too because his leap isn't anywhere near as high as it looks and he has slightly short arms for a ruckman. (Also why he can struggle a bit at pack marking for a ruck). But his endurance for a big fella is off the charts.

Last night was the one of the more competitive looking games from him that I can recall since the year before he left the Pies. Didn't watch too much of him at Melbourne of course, but last night he was active and engaged again. It was old skool Reg and even though he's the oppo now, it was kinda touching to see from the big lug.

Maxy looked to check out a bit in the 2nd half and it's not the first time he's looked like that, especially when the whole oppo team is trying to get stuck into him. Now ok, you rarely look brilliant when you're getting beaten but a physical ruck, getting backed by off the ball physicality seems to work on Max Gawn better than on other rucks and he's going to have to respond to that because if you shut down Maxy, you go a long way to beating Melbourne.

Gawn is still going to post his "why don't I have him?" scores. But last night showed he might have his share of "I'm tired" scores too. Hard to see him finishing the season with both an average much over 110 and a game count over 21. Those missed games also eat into his effective average. Love the guy, but those are the exact reasons I never had him in my team

It’s such a gutsy fade. Games count is the worry.

I had Darcy as R1 but moved to Gawn after Darcy got injured. Have expected all along that he would drop off this year however expect him to still do okay in the first half of the season and then I will trade him out. I mean the reason Melbourne drafted Grundy was IMO to extend the playing career of Gawn by taking some of the load off. So even they acknowledged he cannot go on forever.

I do find it interesting that people are trying to fade Gawn already, given that his first half was fantastic.

Has there been any consideration into the fact it was extremely humid in Sydney? It was upwards of 89% humidity last night, whereas in Melbourne, it was about 65%.

About 95% of the players looked like their jerseys had been glued to their body after the game.

If we remember last year, Laird dropped a 50 in extreme weather conditions in the first round. Then, he dropped a 147 the next round.

I'm not really worried about this and I think too much stock has been put into that second half disaster class.
