The midfielder has been medically cleared to return once he passes concussion protocols. Hopefully you’ve seen elsewhere by now - I believe it was hamstring tightness, and Longmuir said it was taking a cautious approach (or similar) because the game was over.

What if English goes west on a 8-10 year deal? With known issues and then gets medically retired with ~7 years left on his contract?
Who should pay for that? The league or the club who takes the risk? Not a risk if the club gets bailed out from the league paying his salary and not having an impact on their salary cap.
Hope they come to a reasonable outcome so no club say, it doesn’t matter because the league will bail us out and pay the salary anyway!
The health of the player of course is the important outcome, just no other club should be disadvantaged.

Won't that approach create the opposite problem where anyone with concussion history is discriminated against because of the risk? The can only get 1-2 year deals in case they have to retire and clubs have to absorb a huge hit of dead money in the salary cap?

Could be a 2-3 year deal with a retainer of 10% or $100k for every year of a potential 10 year deal if the player cannot see out a 10 year contract. Player makes thru to the 3rd year triggers a clause to get another 2-3 year deal.
I’m no contracts lawyer but I’m sure these things can happen. players get bonuses for B&F, Brownlow finishes. Play a certain amount of games in the seniors triggers a clause, I don’t think it’s that hard to implement?

Feels a bit iffy to me that a player risks so much if concussion rules them out of the game. Imagine you get a concussion and then have to live with that much uncertainty because the club doesn't want to risk having to pay it out even though it is the club sending an employee out into a dangerous environment that has a high risk of concussion. If anything the club should have to pay players more after each subsequent concussion to o***et the increased personal risk the player is undertaking!

Yeah sure, what I'm not advocating for is open slaver for clubs to sign players up for 10 years then to be bailed out by the league because they have that in their back pocket, their get out of jail free card if you like. But I'm also not saying the club should pay the total contract, thus the 10-20% 100 or 200k. I'm not across what TPP's are these days so whatever is a fair and reasonable % be paid by the clubs, coming off their respective TPP over the course of how many years. The remainder to be paid by the AFL league.
Of course this is based on English, who has a known issue. If a player has no known concussion issues then that is the exception? The remainder of that season paid by club then any outstanding years on contract paid for by league. Or again a % paid by the club that comes off the TPP and the rest from the AFL.
And I'm not sure they'll go down the Paddy McCartin road again but if they are paid out of concussion reasons or retired because of concussion, that should be their passport stamped, not to play again? But we are wised for that experience I guess.
Your bolded line makes more sense as well, I wonder where workcover comes into play here? Does workcover even apply to the AFL? if it does, their premiums must be huge, and which case the player/AFL is insured for these events?

Yeah I won't deny it's a complex issue - you could even argue that why restrict this to just concussion (even though that is the main reason players would retire). But don't want to derail the thread by going off on another tangent here!
