Rory Laird was also banged up but played out the game. Nicks said: “I think it was more just a cork. I think it was maybe a corkie through the quad. He then found it hard to push off. He wanted to stay out on the ground knowing we were a few men down.”

This is the full wording of the tweet. If an accurate description of what happened, we have two players, both legitimately going about their business in a contact sport. One got concussed by a legal bump and without contact to the head. If he was not concussed would any penalty have been applied? You cannot have a player being penalised for doing an action that does not contravene the rules but results in the other player accidently getting injured. It does not happen when a player jumps high into a pack and hits someone in the head with his knee concussing them. So why should it apply for a bump. Understand if you choose to bump and you get the guy in the head-that is different.

The interesting one I can think of as a "too severe" penalty being applied was when NicNat tackled Karl Amon a few back. And even then the AFL was playing silly games stating in their case against NicNat that he should have taken into consideration the size difference between himself and Amon (110kg vs 80kg) in the millisecond decision timeframe when tackling. Comedians the lot of them in AFL House.

Big Blue cleared of concussion, TDK heads for scans

CARLTON has completely cleared star forward Harry McKay of a concussion after follow-up tests on Monday morning, but the club is sweating over the fitness of Tom De Koning and Blake Acres ahead of Friday night's clash with Port Adelaide.

McKay copped a knock to the nose in the third quarter of the side's win over North Melbourne on Sunday night, but passed a head injury assessment (HIA) during the game and played out the match.

Further tests in the 24 hours after the incident discovered no issues, with McKay cleared of any concussion problems and set to be made available for the side's important fixture against the Power at Marvel Stadium.

The Blues will send De Koning and Acres in for scans on Monday, though, after both left a bruising encounter against the Kangaroos with knocks that could put them in doubt due to the quick turnaround ahead of their round 20 fixture.

De Koning had his foot stepped on in the early stages of the game and spent an extended period on the bench, before returning to the action, while Acres was subbed out of the contest after also hurting his foot.

It's understood De Koning's foot problem is completely unrelated to the rolled ankle that kept him sidelined for long periods of the side's defeat to Greater Western Sydney earlier this month.

The Blues are confident star midfielder Sam Walsh will be available, having left the game feeling discomfort in his back following a heavy knock in the dying stages of the win over the Kangaroos.
