Zampa is a tough one for me. I’ve backed him the last couple of seasons and he’s been simply awful. I don’t want to say never again, but he’s made it extremely hard to trust him.
Last season he was tired and coming off a lot of cricket, I can't remember the season before. This year he has not played much except for the World Cup where he was great and the series against Pakistan, definitely worth starting in a double round at his price, even if you want to loop him.

Thing is, because he's a captaincy option, he doesn't have to. Between two Strikers doubles and three SGRs there are five rounds he could potentially be a captain.

Not saying this is gonna happen every time, but this is what happened to people that tried to fade Short last year...

Round 2
Short: 270
Next best: Overton 195, D Short 93

Round 6
Short: 264
Next best: Lynn 132, Thornton 101

That would be giving up over a thousand points (with a maximum of 327 coming back through alternative captain selections). Can you find potentially 700 points with the extra cash? I mean, maybe - and of course maybe you won't need to. I can't see how Short's role gets appreciably worse given what @The Myth posted above regarding him giving himself multiple overs even with three other spinners, so then it just comes down to form. I think I'm leaning this way.
I think you could have an argument with equal merit for not having Short in round 1 or having him. As you well point out, and I can attest from personal experience, fading him last year did not go well. For these reasons I am planning my side to allow adding him in round 2 if he is looking good in round 1. I am inclined to fading him however am completely ready to accept that is not the go and that I should buy him in round 2. This is the biggest question for now.

I thought I would flag a few factors that have not been discussed as much as I might have expected this pre season.

They are worth putting in the mix, especially if you are making lineball decisions late, as appears likely this year.

(1) Form. Many of our players will be held for as few as 2-3 games, so class doesn’t have time to win out - it’s not AFL SC where we are choosing our starting keepers and have the benefit of a lot of time for mean reversion to work in our favour. Some popular names have middling form. Cricinfo (matches view - includes Shield etc) or BigBashBoard (match log view - T20 focused) are good for match performance info.

(2) Matchups (eg opponent, ground etc). A batsman facing a weak attack on a postage stamp, and another facing a strong attack on a large ground, are quite different prospects. Sometimes we can get caught up counting doubles and somewhat overlook that the matches aren’t of equal value. BigBashBoard (splits view) is great for historical info, but it has to be used with thought about sample size, as well as what else has changed (eg maybe a bowler’s bunny has retired or changed clubs, or maybe the Scorchers have a different home ground now).

(3) Game order. This influences looping options, as well as how much info you have (eg on BBL team selections) when you need to make decisions. This can be quite valuable.

Any insight as to which guys are going to get the treble of a powerplay over, a surge over and a death over?

Scorchers - Richardson?
Heat - ?
Sixers - Abbott? Edwards?
Hurricanes - ?
Strikers - Overton?
Thunder - Sams?
Renegades - ?
Stars - Curran?

Scorchers - Jhye I would think is most likely. Tye rarely gets a power play over, likewise morris. Dorf up front.
Heat - Bartlett and Johnson both an opportunity here.
Sixers - I expect Bird to take 2 of the power play overs, and SOK quite often took one as well, that could be Hosein this year. I can see only one over in the power play for edwards/Abbott but I expect they will get the bulk of surge/death.
Hurricanes - I expect Ellis and Jordan to exclusively bowl surge and death. Ellis could get a power play over but expect 1 at most.
Strikers: I have my doubts about Thornton at the death which some have suggested. I think Overton very good chance of getting 1 in each time.
Thunder - Ferguson if fit probably the guy here for me. Sams done it before but personally don’t think he’s that effective at the death.
Gades - Rogers looks the most likely of their bowlers to me, but not sure how Fergus is going to fit in, was more upfront last year.
Stars - Curran barely bowled in the power play at the Sixers from memory, I think Milne might be most likely to get this trio before he departs.

This, Fade or Keep is probably going to be season defining.

personally the only 2 guys i see as a lock for 4 overs at the strikers is Overton(fitness pending) and Boyce, So even with plenty of options there is heaps of room there for short to average 2 overs a game throughout the season. Admittedly 300k is obscene given we need to fit an extra player into our squads this season and i'm not likely to start with him but the option is very much workable given the draw on offer.

Bethell with the England Test squad. Monitor Webster and Inglis as it's likely one will be held with the Test squad.
Buckingham injured (and probably fighting for the same spot with Doggett in any case).

Read somewhere that Inglis was released to play a shield game and selected him hoping that would continue to BBL.

Will keep an eye out, also for the others you mentioned.

Thanks.

Bangladesh have named their T/20 squad for the series against WI. Should find out the WI squad either later today or tomorrow (affects Rutherford, Fabien Allen etc.)

Majority of Test Squad flew from Adelaide to Brisbane yesterday afternoon (think Marnus left the previous day) , come on George what is the delay in naming the Squad , SC is about to start :)

surely if Hazlewood gets through training tomorrow , Boland is the spare , so Abbott and Doggett get released.

Which one of Inglis & Webster is the spare and which one gets released ?

I heard something similar.

It seemed to be interpreted as a positive from a BBL perspective, in that he was released from national duty, making him available for his state and franchise.

I did wonder whether it could alternately be read as a negative, in that a Shield game could arguably be the best prep for someone that Australia may have been planning to use as a reserve batsman.

Melbourne Stars have named a new captain after Glenn Maxwell stepped down at the end of last season

Marcus Stoinis has been tasked with leading Melbourne Stars back to the KFC BBL finals, succeeding Glenn Maxwell as the club's men's captain.

The Stars confirmed today Stoinis as their seventh full-time men's captain after Maxwell stepped down at the end of last season to focus on his playing role in the side.

Player availability
Coach Peter Moores says Glenn Maxwell will almost definitely miss the Stars opening game against the Scorchers in Perth on Sunday as he recovers from a left hamstring strain suffered while fielding in the third T20 against Pakistan last month.

Scott Boland and Beau Webster are also unlikely to be released from the Australian Test squad for that match, while No.1 draft pick Ben Duckett will also miss the first two games due to England's third Test against New Zealand in Hamilton. Two-time Stars player of the season, Joe Clarke, has been secured as a replacement for those two matches against the Scorchers and Brisbane Heat.

Pakistan spinner Usama Mir is unavailable until after Christmas with Kiwi speedster Adam Milne signed as a replacement for the first three games of the season.

But English allrounder Tom Curran will be available for the entire season after being poached from Sydney Sixers on a two-year deal.

Possible best XIs
Marcus Stoinis (c), Sam Harper (wk), Ben Duckett, Glenn Maxwell, Beau Webster, Hilton Cartwright, Tom Curran, Usama Mir, Joel Paris, Hamish McKenzie, Scott Boland

For the first game: Joe Clarke, Sam Harper (wk), Tom Rogers, Hilton Cartwright, Marcus Stoinis (c), Campbell Kellaway, Tom Curran, Joel Paris, Hamish McKenzie, Peter Siddle, Adam Milne

Just thinking out loud...

If you are looking at starting a nuff, most of the time you're not going to trade them out, so you want someone with good loopability across the season, particularly in rounds 5, 7 and 9 (no doubles, no byes). Rounds 3, 6 and 8 are less important as there is a team on the bye.

If you're looking at starting a nuff, Salzmann is the best if all you're looking at is the price (dual, base price), but his draw isn't exactly ideal.
Thunder play: Round 1 - 3rd, Round 2 - 3rd, Round 3 - 4th, Round 4 - 1st, Round 5 - 2nd, Round 6 - 1st, Round 7 - 1st, Round 8 - 1st, Round 9 - 1st.

No loopability in rounds 4, 7, 9 and minimal loopability in round 5.

Other options:
Strikers (Buckingham (BWL), base price). No loopability in round 2.
Heat (Vidler, base price, BWL only). No loopability in round 5.
Hurricanes (Doran, base price BAT/WKP (not BAT/BWL). No loopability in round 7.
Stars (Warren, base price, BWL only) no loopability in rounds 1 -3 but loopability in every round after, especially rounds 5, 7 and 9 (3rd, 4th, 4th).
Renegades (Dixon (BAT), Crone (BWL) base price) no loopability in round 4, minimal loopability in round 9.
Sixers (Perry, base price, BWL only). No loopability in rounds 3, 5, 9, minimal loopability in round 7.
Scorchers (Fanning (BAT), Beardman (BWL), base price). No loopability in rounds 1, 8, minimal loopability in rounds 5, 6, 7

So 'Maxi' no show game 1 of the the Stars Rd 1 double but ideally available for the Rd 1 second game Wednesday.....................just when we thought it couldn't get more difficult to decide 'in or out' for the 'MAXI'.....................

Good picking lol.......................more confused day by day me lol................AND, considering what he's shown he can do on just 1x leg too !!

Just got a email from Julie @ SACA to say both Allen and Overton are in the country and ready to play Round 1 😀

Hopefully Julie's information is correct

Probably should have asked her about Ollie Pope as well just to check her source is reliable 😉
Adelaide Strikers Membership Services replied to my email about Allen & Overton

Hi there Andrew,

I hope you are having a fantastic day.

Unfortunately, we cannot disclose that information, but we are sure the team that walks out on the 17th of December will give it their best!

Warmest regards,

Alex.

what a load of **** , Strikers Central potsed abour Overton en route

Maybe I will ring him up and say I will become a Member if he tells me :)

all clubs should be advising fans and general public when their OS players have arrived in the country , BBL seriously lacks in publicity
