22 for Konstas

Think it's time the media stopped talking about him until the runs start flowing again.

Plenty of other players actually making runs that probably deserve a Test spot before him

Could vanish quicker than he appeared.
Think that's a little harsh on the kid, especially seeing it was his first game at the Gabba ever, off the back of spending a couple of weeks in Sri Lanka.

Also still averaging a tick under 50 for the year in the Shield.

Might just be me then but sick of hearing/reading how he is opening in the Ashes , WTC and already in India in 2 years time.

Might just be old fashioned but let the runs do the talking.

Ideal opportunity for CA to show some iniative and organise a Test (s) against Ireland as preparation.

Sounds like Green (potentially) , Konstas , Labuschagne & Webster so far will be playing some county cricket

Keep seeing graphics along these lines and thought it'd be nice to discuss it with people who can actually string a sentence together.

So who do we think fills in the four gaps?

I'll go in order of my level of certainty.

Green isn't bowling, so 6 is Webster. That's not really a contest for me. He's the incumbent and hasn't put a foot wrong in any role asked of him.

I have a pretty strong view that Marnus will be retained - he basically built his career on strong form in England and even though his Test record there is more good than great (avg 39.36) I think they'll value the experience in a one-off game. If they want to move him on the start of the new cycle - WI away - feels like the more obvious time to do it.

Hazlewood is a significant injury risk now so I'd be picking Boland as the third seamer. There's a lot of talk that Boland's record in England is poor, but there's two significant caveats here. Firstly, he took five wickets at 21 in the last final, including Gill twice and Kohli. His bowling was actually viewed as incredibly well suited to England before 2023, the bigger issue is the way England played, which is almost designed to take down that kind of bowler who hits the same spot over and over. I maintain that even McGrath would have struggled against that kind of approach. (Or more likely, would have developed into a different kind of bowler, much as T20 has been pushing bowlers towards for a generation.) So the real question is whether South Africa can replicate that approach. I don't think so, their batting has come along in leaps and bounds this cycle but it's still pretty raw and aside from Stubbs they aren't super aggressive by nature either. You feel like they'd be better suited to playing the way that got them to this point. I think that favours Boland.

The opener could be any one of the remaining batters that have been tried recently but I absolutely would not be throwing another debutant in against what will be an elite attack no matter who is picked/fit. Given how it's gone throwing middle order players up to open though I'm sticking with Konstas.

Reserves - Green, Inglis, Hazlewood, Kuhnemann
First three are self explanatory, can't see two spinners being the play at Lord's but you never know... and he's surely going to WI anyway so he may as well come along.

Great post.

1. Green or Konstas
3. Labuschagne 🤐
6. Webster
11. Hazlewood or Boland.

Sitting on the fence I know , wonder how Neser would go at Lord's 🤔

Green is hopeful of playing WA's final Shield game then county cricket (bat only).

I would imagine Inglis remains as the "spare bat".

Connolly or McSweeney on the WI tour.

Not sure on a 5th quick yet , 3 Tests are within 21 days.

MLC is rumoured to be mid June to mid July so hopefully we have a few players over there if needed in any case.

Some whispers (again) about Kuhnemann's action but if all clear he will remain the # 2 spinner , 2 quicks-Webster-2 spinners might be the mix for the West Indies.

Last I heard South Africa were looking to play a warm up game / test against Ireland. We didn't play a warm up game last time, which was probably never an option with 5 test after the WTC, so I'm guessing we won't this time.

Not sure CA have even thought that far ahead!

I think they'll go Konstas / Webster / Hazelwood although it'll be interesting to see if Boland holds his spot over Hazelwood which he could very well on form.

I'm worried about Uzzie and Marnus against some good quality quick bowling, but I can't see them dropping either for a one-off game.

Apparently Matt Kuhnemann has been cited for a suspect bowling action. Can't play any international matches until he is cleared.
