Totally disagree with most here over the Boyd trade. When is the last time a side won a flag without an A grade key forward? Since Barry Hall the Bulldogs have had essentially nothing to kick to with VFL quality key forwards.

I'm guessing critics dislike the huge risk aspect mainly. Well how exactly is a side near the bottom going to get a risk free A grade long term key forward? What deal would you have done to get a potential or current star forward? Just taken a pick for Griffen and hoped to draft a future star was their only other option. That is feasible but you're relying on the clubs before you not taking the star. If Boyd becomes half the player he was touted to be one year ago then it will be a good trade.

Griffen is irrelevant for the Bulldogs from a long term perspective. He was never going to play a key role in the Bulldogs breaking their premiership drought. They already have Liberatore, Macrae and Bontempelli to build their midfield around.

Funny you write this as i've changed my mind on the trade as well. While i don't love it, to be a real flag threat down the track they had to grab a Boyd type with the carry on effect of benefiting Crameri/Stringer types as well.

It's still a massive risk but one i think they had to take to put themselves in a position to threaten in 4-5 years time.

Exactly. If we didn't get a deal done there would be loads of crappy opinion pieces on how we will never win a flag because we aren't prepared to be bold for need. He is only part of the equation too, we still need to do more. We need more KPP's.

The other option was get a pick for Griffen. Everyone thinks 4 would have been given. I think GWS would have dangled 7 to the last minute knowing theres a chance we'd cave.

Hope we got McCartin, Durdin or Wright with pick 4 or 6 who are no where near as rated. If they show potential then what? It would have taken a mega deal anyways to hold off other clubs after their initial 2 year contract was up.

I'd much rather get the main man and lock him in.

Six-game Hawk takes up three-year offer from Suns

HAWTHORN and Gold Coast have finalised a trade sending midfielder Mitch Hallahan to the Suns in exchange for picks No.47 and 49 in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft.

In a deal that took significant time to finalise, Hallahan joined the Suns on the final day of the NAB AFL Trade Period with less than two-and-a-half hours remaining before the 2pm deadline.

The 22-year-old said the prospect of playing with Suns superstar Gary Ablett and the club's promising midfield group was a key factor in his decision.

"I think it's going to be a wonderful experience for myself to learn and play alongside not only the young exciting talent they have in (David) Swallow, (Jaeger) O'Meara, (Dion) Prestia, but also probably, arguably, the greatest midfielder in the game in Gary Ablett," Hallahan told NAB AFL Trade Radio.

"I think it's going to be really good for my football in the coming years."

Hallahan, who played six games in 2014, was contracted for next season with Hawthorn but he has been released to take up a three-year offer with Gold Coast.

Hallahan was drafted with pick No.38 in the 2010 Draft and won the JJ Liston Trophy as the VFL's best and fairest player in 2013.

Hawthorn's recruitment of Jono O'Rourke via a trade last week made Hallahan reassess his position at the Hawks, and he said former coach Alastair Clarkson had been fantastic in his communication and support.

"I can't thank Clarko enough," Hallahan said.

"He's been honest right the way throughout the four years but in particular the last couple of weeks. He's been the most honest person. He's hit me between the eyes and he's been great for me in my development."

Hawthorn recruiting and list manager Graham Wright said Hallahan's decision to leave was based on playing more senior games.

"Mitch has made a solid contribution in his four years at Hawthorn and we understand that he leaves to pursue an opportunity to play regular senior football for the Suns," he said.

"He is much admired and respected by our playing and coaching group and we wish him well in his next AFL opportunity.

"Securing two third-round draft picks gives us some options in the remaining trade window and the upcoming AFL draft."

that doesn't make good reading for Brisbane. they must recognise this deficiency as it's plain for all to see. Perhaps they have a lot of faith in the young forwards Freeman and Close? They are both good size and decent marks/kicks but look a long way off filling the Brown void.

Depends a bit on Woody, Anderson and to a lesser extent WhiteX and Hartung - I would expect he gets games next year, but has to learn the Hawks system etc.

My take on all this overs talk is well derrrrrr lol. How else do you get something in high demand? Very rare to get unders like Brisbane and christensen. Even in your luke ball scenario you get unders by using the PSD but then probably go overs in the contract.

How many soccer players are actually worth 100 million?

I personally dont see it as overs on the trade table. It's overs on the contract. If he turns out as good as EVERY expert thinks, it will only be overs for a year or two of his contract. BUT Carlton and St Kilda were preparing for an overs move next season too.

As for the trade itself, Griffen weakened our position by stating it was move or retire. Cameron and GWS knew this. Meaning his value to us was 0. Essentially it cost us pick 6 to get last seasons #1 pick and thats it. Because Griffen is basically a retired player talked out of retirement.
