Kristian Jaksch, Mark Whiley join Carlton in trade from GWS

The sudden burst of trading action on Wednesday has continued with Carlton lodging its trade deal to secure the Giants' Kristian Jaksch on Wednesday.

After the long-awaited five-club Dayne Beams deal was eventually completed 11 days into the 12-day trading period, followed rapidly by a Saints-Cats deal, the paperwork was lodged Wednesday afternoon for the Blues to claim two Giants and slide 11 spots in the draft.

Under the deal - which was long-mooted but stalled as contracts were organised, players convinced to move and other trade negotiations interfered - Carlton has given up pick seven to the Giants in exchange for Jaksch, pick 19 (which GWS received from Hawthorn for trading Jono O'Rourke) and emerging midfielder Mark Whiley.

The deal was waiting on a positive outcome from a late-morning medical that Whiley was due to be taking at Carlton.

The deal leaves GWS with picks 4 and 7 and potentially open to trading both picks to St Kilda for pick 1 should either pick not be required in a trade with the Bulldogs for disgruntled captain Ryan Griffen.

The Blues effectively claim two players in exchange for sliding 11 places in the draft. Jaksch is a versatile 195cm key forward who has also played key defence and so offers the Blues the versatility, like a Lachie Henderson, to swing forward or back.

He is a good lead at the ball but at the Giants found it difficult to find him a game as a forward with Jeremy Cameron, Jon Patten, Tom Boyd and Cam McCarthy ahead of him. He played primarily in defence in his seven games with the Giants since being taken at pick 12 in the 2012 draft. A knee injury at the start of 2013 disrupted his first season.

Whiley was highly sought after by Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions and had expected when entering this trade period that he might have been heading to either of those clubs, most likely Collingwood should he move from the Giants. But the complicated Beams deal ensured that neither of those sides had the capacity to do a deal for the Giants midfielder.

Whiley is a good sized midfielder - 188cm - and runs well. He has managed only the 12 games for the Giants but was regarded by clubs as a player who had good upside in a trade. He is a player that was being sought for a trade in his own right and so while he is an add-on to the Jaksch deal he is more than an irrelevant "steak knives" sweetener to getting the other deal done.

Keep in mind Jaksch is not established as a key position player but to only lose 10 or so spots down in draft it seems an ok deal. Hopefully he becomes a quality key defender or key forward. We need a least 2 more so if is one of them might end up handy trade in long term. Know very little about the other guy.
I don't expect immediate week in, week out and awesome output from Jaksch next year, but the underlying talent is there and we needed someone else on the list that truly allows us to be flexible with Henderson going forward without sacrificing quality at either end. I'm optimistic Jaksch won't be a bust for the club, great long kick and was spoiling balls against Henderson all game when they beat us this year. Hopefully he can take a great contested mark - it's one thing we strongly value so I'm assuming he has it in him. We've only dropped 12 places in the draft order and will probably still get a very good player to work with there, given the supposed evenness of the draft from pick 6-20. If there is someone available, I'd be hoping for a pacy outside midfielder with accurate foot skills to address that gap in our young midfield brigade.

I noticed Whiley in their game against Collingwood this year - looks like we really have someone to work with there. If he develops as rapidly away from GWS as Miles, we really have done well in the trade.

Are Geelong tanking?

Mitch Brown, Shane Kersten, Hamish McIntosh, Dawson Simpson, Rhys Stanley, Mitch Clark, Nathan Vardy, Josh Walker, Mark Blicavs.

All injury prone or unproven at the highest level.
Seems like it. Awful trade period for us.

WOW! biggest day in trade history i think.
Doubt it. Probably not even top 5 but it was a decent day of trades.
In 1986 Sydney Swans had Geoffrey Edelsten owner. He got Hafey as coach, Greg Williams from Geelong, Bernard Toohey from Geelong, Gerard Healy from Melbourne and Merv Neagle from Essendon. Not seen anything like it in all my time following footy in one off season. There were probably other players but those guys were all gun players of that time that come straight to mind that almost made Swans a gun team overnight. With Healy and Williams in centre they played some amazing football at times. Either that season or next, Sydney had a 3 week period where they kicked 30 goals or more three weeks in a row. It was amazing. They never won a flag from that though. Actually come to think of it. Hawks got Platten in 1986. Carlton got Kernahan, Bradley, Naley and Motley. Those guys were not transfers from other clubs in the league. They were recruited from South Australia. 1986 off season was massive. Those 3 clubs I think were basically best of that season.

Getting back to this year though. What is fascinating though about this year is how many players that a month ago no one saw going actually left for new clubs.
There was no serious talk at all of Bulldogs captain going, Christensen going, Beams going and Boyd going but it has happened. Bit of a shock.
Greenwood I never saw happening too. Every one of those clubs own supporters would never saw any of those guys going. Gotta say I reckon Cats the biggest losers this trade period and hard to go past Lions as biggest winners. Lions got two genuine quality mids ready to be in their prime and they did not lose any of their established young guns. Patfull is gone but at his age it is no massive loss for longer term. One young mid was worth giving up to get these trades done. You would rather give up Crisp than Aish or Taylor or Mayes. Given their list is young, pick 5 was well and truly worth also giving up.

Griffen at GWS means the #1 tag goes to him (assuming so).
That frees up Ward and possibly even Treloar/Greene.
Gonna be an interesting dilemma for me next year because it will be my first time having a GWS player in my team ;)

Ridiculous trade by the Bulldogs. On what they're giving away it is like Boyd is guaranteed to be a "Buddy" or NRoo. He's not!
They were like the guy at the carnival that keeps paying $5 for 3 balls, and ends up paying $40 for a $20 teddy bear!
I think they got too focussed on the prize, and forgot to keep track of the price!

I will be honest, and say there is a lot I don't like about Collingwood (I won't go into that here!), but I will give them their due. Each and every trade period they play hard-ball and end up level or in front on their trades. Brisbane have probably paid overs for Beams, and Collingwood mark another small win on their trade score card!

The logic to your post is all there and correct.

BUT lol as a supporter I'm thrilled with the move.

The risk is blowing money we need to spend anyways. The potential reward we all know what it is.

However sometimes the message is important too. And for long suffering fans it's the message we wanted. I struggle to find a Bulldog fan who is unhappy. We all agree we have paid well overs but we all agree we had to do it. My whole life all I have heard is "the doggies are great but lacking that big FWD" my whole life we have had band aid solutions. The only power forward that was anything decent was Barry Hall. But that was for only one season. One season too late. All he did was replace Johno and Aka's goals that they stopped scoring.

The way I see Boyd is we have an up and down straight draw after already having the 2nd highest pair on the table, and also have a flush draw. There are about 15 cards left in the deck to make our hand. GWS have gone all in and we have called with still an ok sized stack to work from if the card does not drop lol.

I know two families that took a punt on "useless" farm land 30 years ago. Sold their house and at that time paid a whopping $300k. The bank balance of these families is now $120 million and $70 million lol. Sometimes you need to make the far fetched play. And if your not going to make the play when your salaries are low and can juggle this easily, your so called captain demands to leave or wont play, you coach resigns, your members have had enough, then when will you lol.

All in all even if he is a flop, Bulldog fans themselves wont say we farked up hard and attack the club, we will say at least we showed everyone we can pull off and have the balls to make a move. It's restored the faith and hope that was lost only a week ago. It's shown in the free agency era we can attract players in high demand, not just lose them. We are not insignificant.

The way I also see it is Griffen was a dead ship thats 28/29. His value plummeted with the perception being he either played at GWS, or stayed home. There was talk of pick 4 but I dont see it, why would GWS pay high knowing at 1:30 we would crumble to accept pick 7 and steak knives. If that. They would have played us at our game and taken pick 1 off the saints next year for Boyd. And get Griffen for free.

So essentially I view it as we have swapped pick 6 in exchange for Tom Boyd. Compo picks could be gone next year, if they stay then it was pick 6 + Griffen compo pick for a player that would have been #1 again this season if he was in the draft. Considering last season Griffen + 4 (Bontemempelli) probably wouldn't have been enough to get pick 1 (Boyd) I think we have done extremely well to end up with both bonts and boyd.

We have also covered our bases with a 7 year deal. Most likely he will be a great player. So if clubs come chasing they have to pay.

All in all I'm very happy to have taken the risk

Ryder confirmed to Port - gee they are making a strong side!

Giles to the Bombers - hmmm, could be a reasonable R2?

Same boat although there'll be more experienced premiums in that price bracket to consider too

Giles Averaged 74 ish last year, which will probably put him in the $380k - $400k mark. A bit in-between for me, he was a pretty good pick a couple of years ago when rookie priced.

I would have enough concerns about his scoring potential to stay away.

Probably more so also because a fit Leunberger or Krezuer at a cheaper price would seem to be better value, emphasis on FIT.

Are Port taking a huge risk, or have they done massive homework with ASADA ?

could be a win for the bombers, even though it would be a massive loss with the rest. Ryder has to serve a suspension while Cooney and pick 17 play lol
