Could be worth considering if named as a defender next year.

Young Roo Harper may be part of North's Adam Cooney deal

KIERAN Harper has emerged as a key part of the deal North Melbourne is putting together in an attempt to lure Western Bulldog Adam Cooney to Arden Street.

AFL.com.au understands Harper, 22, has completed a medical test with the Bulldogs and is open to the possibility of a change of club after struggling with injury and form over the past two seasons.

North met with Cooney last Friday, but faces stiff competition from Essendon to win his signature.

However, the 2008 Brownlow medallist is contracted to the Bulldogs for next season and remains a chance to stay.

Cooney is understood to have had a strained relationship with ex-coach Brendan McCartney this year, with the latter's departure from the Whitten Oval last Friday a possible factor in Cooney's decision.

The 29-year-old returned from a holiday on the Gold Coast on Tuesday afternoon to make a final decision on his football future ahead of the end of trade period at 2pm on Thursday.

It is understood North's offer for Cooney will also involve an exchange of draft picks, with the Roos' second-round pick, No. 36, possibly also in play.

Little more than 18 months ago, Harper was widely considered one of North's brightest young talents, having shown glimpses of line-breaking run and freakish goal sense that suggested he was a star in the making.

At the time, Harper had played 37 games in two years at Arden Street and was rated almost as highly as fellow 2010 draftee Shaun Atley.

However, Harper was dropped after the first three rounds of 2013 and has not played a senior game since.

Harper was the No. 27 pick in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft.

Watch list. Should be close to rookie price

You struck gold idig. Should be close to rookie price. Can play from memory and with so many dogs leaving the kennel there should be a few spots for players like him.

have to say out loud that it feels good to be a Lions supporter right now. this time last year i was almost in tears! finally things are on track at our club. lets hope the supporters get on board and join up. i think Beams alone brings a couple 1000 new members. i'm only hearing good things about Leppa, we have a good coaching staff and a CEO and admin that understands business fundamentals which is something we've not had in our admin for a while.

Christensen is a huge bonus and i think he'll perfectly complement what we have in our mids already. woohoo!

2015, lets go Lions!

Things really come together for your boys.
Looking forward to watching your new midfield against the good sides.

Thanks BC. appreciate your sentiments. I think Pies have done okay out of the Beams trade, but draft picks can be anything, good or bad. Crisp is good young player, just needs to work on his foot skills but no doubt Buckley can provide some assistance there.

i think our mids will match most sides, just not sure who we're kicking it to inside 50. our young forwards have potential but that'll be our issue for a few years to come.

Rockliff, Dayne Beams, Hanley, Redden, Zorko, Christensen, Rich, Aish, Claye Beams and Taylor.. that's going to be some kind of midfield group! I'd be feeling very happy as a Lions supporter at the moment.

Crisp will fit in perfect mate. Whole team has no foot skills bar 2 or 3

Just off fb but i reckon this is what the struggling teams gotta be doing

St Kilda Football Club have a plan.

They are building a team of high draft picks and have a formula that forces them to have 3 picks inside 20 each year.

Last year the Saints picked up Jack Billings (3) Luke Dunstan (18) Blake Acres (19).

The saints current have Pick 1, Pick 21 (Rhys Stanley) and Pick 22.

• Dayne Beams and pick 67 to Collingwood; Jack Crisp and picks 5 and 25 to Collingwood
• Clark, Lumumba, Varcoe: Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne, Mitch Clark to Geelong, Travis Varcoe to Collingwood

Collingwood could win the Beams deal long term if they draft a top player with pick 5, which is quite possible given they get Crisp and Greenwood as well.

If teams impose deadlines or say x definitely won't happen they look pretty stupid when it happens (e.g. Beams going to Brisbane). Probably best not to be definitive in the trade period.

I would have rated Stanley as a pick in the 40s so they've done very well getting 21. If Clark doesn't prove a success then this trade period has been a disaster for the Cats.

So what is Geelong's key forward / ruck structure going to look like? They obviously rate Stanley higher than Walker and Kersten otherwise they wouldn't have got him.

So...

Rockliff has become the best midfielder. Beams is now there too. Hanley cant handle a tag, so its wise to tag him too. Does this mean Rich may be an ok discounted option in SC?

Collingwood got a steal with Greenwood for pick 25.
Stupid North for not signing him up mid year.
They develop him to become a senior player and the moment he starts to blossom they lose him and Collingwood get the benefit.
That is a **** list management situation that has happened.

would only pick rich if he has an uninterrupted preseason, then have a look-see during the practice matches. they might give him a new roll off half back for example so could be more than viable.

i think rich will play a lot off half back, almost the hanley type role, with hanley switching more permanently to midfield role. rich would then have lots of rebound 50's, every kick over 40m with good efficiency, and the ability to go forward and kick inside 50 and long goals. as sloth said, depending on p/s he could be a good discounted option

Rich might get the tag when he's back. From memory he cant handle a tag either. Going to be interesting how beams, rich ect will impact rockli*** scoring. Doubt ill pay $700's for him due to this unknown.

I like it too. Desperately needed a young key forward so that has finally been addressed. Could still get a good player at 19 as well so if Whiley ends up doing well he'll be a bonus.

Just need not to renew McLean's contract (as rumoured) and the club is finally starting to make some good decisions.
