Player summary: Talented midfielder

Why: With the best of North's outside ball movers on the wrong side of 30 (Harvey, Wells, Dal Santo) by the time the season has started, recruiting some young players to develop and replace these players is a must. Cockatoo is the second best line breaker in the draft after Pickett. Cockatoo possesses great speed and agility and is a sound user of the ball and is no slouch in front of goals. Cockatoo also knows a few evasive tricks and can step through traffic with ease. His height and speed allows him to play a number of roles - he can play as an inside midfielder, outside midfielder, half-back flank and half-forward flank. He made a massive statement during the Allies vs. AFL Academy on Grand Final Day, winning best afield honours and kicking two impressive goals that was really a tasting platter from a base fitness level.

Pick 17. Essendon

Jordan De Goey (Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers)
Midfielder/Forward
15.3.1996 Height: 187cm Weight: 82kg
Plays Like: Colin Sylvia

Why: De Goey is a inside midfielder with plenty of edge and competitiveness about him. With versatility to play on any flank he's a legitimate match-winner with boundless x-factor. His main strength is his contested ability, recording some of the highest numbers at junior level despite not exceedingly high overall disposal numbers, he just gets stuck in there and inspires his teammates doing so. Also a good mark, he uses his body and strength well to get into a good position to use his kicking skills to devastating effect.


Pick 18. Sydney

Isaac Heeney (NSW-ACT/Cardiff)
Inside Midfielder
5.5.1996 Height: 185cm Weight: 82kg
Player Similarity: Travis Boak

Why: A terrific midfielder and quite possibly one of the top three in the draft and well worth all the whinging from Victoria for Sydney. He's a complete inside midfield with one of the best well rounded games. No trouble finding the ball he's got the technique and vision to make it seem like the game is in slow motion. His pace and agility is up there not just with the ball in hand to break from a pack, but also used to devastating effect chasing down opponents with high tacking recorded in most games played. He's a natural player, will be a gun once getting regular games for Sydney. If he wasn't going to the Swans you'd lock him in to playing Rd 1, you still might.

19. Carlton - Jarrod Garlett

Plays like: Brad Hill
Player summary: Outside linebreaker

Why: With Daisy Thomas failing to excite, Jeff Garlett leaving for Melbourne and Judd starting to look his age at the end of a fine career, Carlton need an injection of flash and excitement. Garlett has this with the added bonus of a work ethic. Garlett is lightning quick, damaging, polished and full of excitement, with his bread and butter being his dash, disposal efficiency and defensive work. He breaks lines with his run and carry, and is good enough around goal to cause headaches for the opposition.

Pick 20. Essendon

Tom Lamb (Victoria Country/Dandenong Stingrays)
Tall Forward
19.10.1996 Height: 193cm Weight 84kg
Plays Like: Jared Brennan

Why: One of the most talented players in the draft and also one of the fittest. Lamb smashed the combine last week and he rates elite for athleticism and endurance despite almost being a key forward. He is good playing all over the ground but is mainly used in the forward half and he has a great knack for goal and can be eye-catching at times as he breaks away from his marker. His athleticism allows him to play around the ground and he's shown some ability to play on the wing or half back and find his own ball in the middle. He has a few knocks though in his defensive efforts or lack thereof, as well as attitude and propensity to fade out of the games but the tools are all there for a club to work with, he could be one of the steals of the draft.

21. St Kilda - Corey Ellis

Age: 18
Height: 185cm
Weight: 76kg
Club: Western Jets
Plays like: Andrew Gaff
Player summary: Skillful midfielder

Why: Adding Acres and Billings to the squad addressed the Saints’ need for class in the middle, but Ellis will add more to an up-and-coming midfield group. His mix of inside and outside play will allow for the more outside types to stick to that role. He has an uncanny way of pulling off some unrealistic things with the way he can slip out of a tackle, spin through congestion, let fly of an elegant handball through the thickest of congestion and effortlessly kick the ball on either side of his body, regardless of the degree of difficulty. Ellis can really hit some tackles and win his own inside ball - however, he’s very much a playmaker. His marking around the ground is superb, as is the way he uses the ball going inside 50.

That's the first round done, woo hoo! That was a good slog and quite hard to do, if just for getting the write ups done as quickly as possible.
Oh, Loved the irony of Carlton getting another Garlett

As I said earlier, very similar to how I see the first round going. Once you get to 16/17 things start to get a bit more open and once the 2nd round beings tomorrow, it will be even more speculative, despite the fact there's decent draft depth for another 40-odd picks.

Marco Paparone for someone on a list now, someone else said Goddard too. Bit hard to define the utility types, especially at Lamb's height and play-style, best take the comparisons as very general rather than specific.

There doesn't appear to be that nice combination of teams bereft of talent with high draft picks. Petracca to the Saints is the only one I can see. Paul Roos doesn't like playing rookies, GWS now have competition for spots and no Brisbane or Doggies in the first round.

There's a few mature bodies that will be taken 2-3rd rd that could play straight away. In the first round Petracca, Brayshaw and Heeney are the most ready made but the price tag will be steep on first two. It's a bit harder after that, the problem with so many KPPs. Conceivably some out of Duggan, Laverde, Lamb, Weller could play - Pickett should get game time, though I can't see him getting more than a couple of sub appearances if he is selected.

I feel as though without injuries this year that he might have gone a bit higher. I for one, rate him really highly, but I'm trying to model what I think each team will do more. If anyone in this draft is to do a 'Patrick Cripps' it'd be Bampton. I mean that as in, Cripps was projected to go 20-30 but Carlton really liked what they saw and pulled the trigger at 14. Another club could do the same with Bampton if they really like what they've seen. He's officially now your boy Phil

We'll be starting the 2nd Round at 3pm today. I've edited the Saints a bit now with the info that Schneider had been delisted (to be rookied), as well as making North live pick with their third selection, I've back-flipped there because it would seem more strange if they didn't use it, just nothing is official yet. Wont make any more changes though unless the news come before we start today.

Thanks! I heard he was a player to keep an eye on over last summer and I knew he missed games with the ankle this year but somehow missed the news about the recent shoulder reco! Hopefully once it is fixed it is truly fixed and doesn't affect the rest of his career at all!
