Off top of my head. No Franklin, Pendlebury, Roughy or Betts.
Yet Birchall is playing.
Not exactly "full of stars".
"Full of stars" =/= every single one of the top players in the competition

I do not label players as stars as easily as some :)
Birchall is not star in my eyes. A very good running backman. Not a star. Rioli is a star. Franklin is a star. Roughy is a star. Hodge is a star. Stevie J is a star. Betts is a star. Boak is star. Pendles is a star. Dangerfield is a star.

However,...

Brodie Smith, Birchall and Nick Smith just good honest footballers.... to me....

Pendlebury is injured, having his shoulder fixed.
And you're not going to get every star playing in it, so I think they've done extremely well to get the ones that they have to be honest.

They certainly have. Closest in a number of years.
Maybe 1989 State of Origin match at G was last time anything close to a full strength side took to field. Murdered SA by 16 goals in front of over 90,0000. Lockett, Abeltt etc. unstoppable.

No surprises really but:

Mark Thompson will not work at Essendon next season

MARK Thompson will not work at Essendon next year after talks today broke down with club officials.

‘’I’m out, I’m done,’’ Thompson told the Herald Sun.

“There’s not a job there for me.

“I was happy to work there, but a role could not be agreed upon.’’

Thompson today met with Essendon chairman Paul Little and chief executive Xavier Campbell, where it was agreed Thompson’s coaching career at Essendon was finished.

The club had tried to work out a role, but had become increasingly frustrated with Thompson in recent weeks because the club could not contact him.

“In the end, it just didn’t work at all,’’ Thompson said.

It means the coaching dream ticket formed in 2011 of Thompson and James Hird has ended after a controversial two years.

Thompson was stand-in coach while Hird was suspended for the 2014 season and Thompson admitted at the club best-and-fairest in October that he wanted to continue coaching.

Neil Craig’s position as head of football performance meant Thompson would’ve been answerable to Craig if he stayed, a situation which bemused Thompson.

Even if Craig is appointed coach of the Western Bulldogs in the next 48 hours, which is a possibility, Thompson won’t return to Essendon.

I'm not sure many non-Carlton/Adelaide supporters would call Betts a star. More of a flashy cult-hero type, than genuine star for mine.

I can understand that. He is a different type of star. It's his freakish goal kicking ability plus personality that makes him the entertaining footballer he is. Entertainment value is high to watch this little star in action. He can create a goal out of nothing like few other footballers, on a regular basis, whether kicking it himself or forcing defender under pressure with his tackling pressure and speed. He is also a good mark on the lead. His highlight reel is something to see. Best bit about him in action is after you seen it a number of time, you not surprised what tricks he can pull off. One of my favourites is last game at Football Park of Port v Carlton. Now he pulls those tricks off at Adelaide Oval to entertain Crow fans for next 3 or so years.

Flashy Betts may be, but Nick Smith, for example, is a better player. Best lockdown small defender in the league, by some distance.

He cant work in the AFL until it is paid, and would probably seek that to be paid by a club who wish to have his services. The vibe I get is he wont have to pay if he is happy to retire

Hope Thompson gets the Bulldogs job. Sick of inexperienced coaches getting blamed wholly with experienced players using them as a convenient scapegoat. e.g. Playings inferring it was entirely Bailey's, Neeld's, Sanderson's, McCartney's, McKenna's, etc fault their teams didn't perform to their potential. Certainly all of them deserved to be blamed but not 100%.

Melbourne showed minimal improvement under Roos last season, which suggests perhaps the players have attitude problems and/or a simple lack of ability. I don't expect Adelaide or the Bulldogs to suddenly become great sides.
