I have started analysing the schedule of the draw, in Excel of course! The rational is to look for which team one should be selecting a floating donut from. Often many use their R4 for this purpose with Max King being a popular choice last year.
For each round I allocate each team a number based on the timing of their game.
So teams in the first game get 1, second game 2, then 3 ,4 etc...
Further if games overlap I break it down to the starting time and how much of the other games has been played. So if two games start at the same time on Saturday night they are both generally allocated 5 even though they are games 5 and 6. I get even more pedantic in that I break it down to haves, quarters and eighths. For example the Sunday twilight game often starts around half time of the 3:20pm game so it is allocated as game 8.5 instead of 9. Another example is often on Saturday day games or night games one match starts 20 to 25 minutes later than the other so I give the later starting game the value of 2.125 or 5.125. (PS I don't care if one disagrees on what the exact values should be, I do this primarily for my own use!)
(I will add a table here soon to visualise it better)
The following table shows the average value for teams over the season. (Note this is round 1-10, 14-22, I don't count the bye rounds as one can use any bye player as a donut and there is no schedule yet for round 23).
Fremantle 6.64
WCE 5.96
Brisbane 5.89
St Kilda 5.42
Melbourne 5.11
WB 5.08
Port Adelaide 5.07
North 5.03
Essendon 4.70
Geelong 4.62
Adelaide 4.58
Hawthorn 4.42
Sydney 4.32
GWS 4.17
Gold Coast 4.10
Richmond 3.61
Collingwood 3.38
Carlton 3.04
Hence Fremantle are the best option to pick a floating donut player from. When you look at their draw you will notice they play the first game in round 10, a Saturday twilight game in round 17 but for the rest of the relevant parts of the season they are either one of the Saturday night or Sunday games.
Now I have also taken a snapshot at round 10 as some may want to just look at this up to the bye rounds with the rationale that they will be carrying enough injured players to act as donuts for the rest of the season!
Brisbane 6.49
Port Adelaide 6.26
Fremantle 6.00
WCE 5.65
North 5.56
Hawthorn 5.40
Geelong 5.30
WB 4.85
Essendon 4.69
Adelaide 4.53
St Kilda 4.24
Collingwood 4.23
Melbourne 4.10
Gold Coast 4.09
GWS 4.09
Sydney 3.93
Richmond 3.53
Carlton 2.29
Hence if you only care about the first ten rounds then Brisbane is your team!
I will add more posts later looking closer at other items of analysis when I get to it.
(PS - for those looking right now I work on trying to format the post better, just having a little trouble copying in tables!)
