Watch me hop off him quicker than an amateur bull rider who's had too many beers :)

McClure also tweeted: "Huge concern about Ryan Griffen's back. GWS docs have contacted Bulldogs, seeking advice of how to manage it. Highlights rushed trade deal."

Surgery for Dixon as another Sun has scans

Michael Whiting February 4, 2015 4:40 PM

GOLD Coast has endured a tough few days, with forward Charlie Dixon undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and midfielder Jesse Lonergan having scans on his right ankle following a training mishap on Wednesday. Fullback Steven May also had surgery on a knee last week. In what appeared an innocuous incident at training, 20-year-old Lonergan stood on a teammate's foot during the warm-up before crumpling to the ground. He was taken to hospital for scans and coach Rodney Eade said he would now be closely monitored by the club's medical staff. "Jesse unfortunately suffered an ankle injury at training on Wednesday, however the full extent of his injury is still to be determined," Eade said.

The news came in the same week Dixon had minor surgery. “We have been carefully managing Charlie’s training loads in recent weeks, but after consulting with our medical team, it was determined the arthroscopy would give him the best chance of recovery,” Eade said. “We envisage he will be back running in three to four weeks.” This is likely to limit Dixon's impact in the NAB Challenge, with the Suns' first match against Geelong in Townsville on March 1.

Lonergan has had a wretched run with injuries in his two seasons since being taken at pick No.13 in the 2012 AFL Draft. He has broken both hands and had a series of hamstring injuries, managing just 13 senior games. His teammates underwent an hour of match simulation at Metricon Stadium, with most players taking part.

Jack Martin was sensational through the midfield and half-forward in a game that was played in three thirds, while off-season recruits Nick Malceski and Mitch Hallahan also shone.

Key Eagles duo return to training track

Alex Malcolm February 4, 2015 2:59 PM

WEST Coast received a boost in a lead-up to the NAB Challenge with key duo Scott Selwood and Jack Darling back running after long injury lay-o***. Neither man participated in the main drills during the Eagles' open training session at Patersons Stadium on Wednesday, but Selwood ran well as he lifted the intensity following ankle surgery prior to Christmas. The 2012 best and fairest winner appears likely to participate in the latter stages of the NAB Challenge. Darling's workload was lighter than Selwood's. He did some light running and agility work with the key forward still working his way back from a stress fracture in his foot.

The Eagles open the pre-season with a fixture against the AFL Indigenous All-Stars at Medibank Stadium in Perth on Friday February 20. They then host Carlton in their first NAB Challenge match at Rushton Park in Mandurah seven days later.

Ruckman Nic Naitanui was held out of the match simulation, but completed a testing running session instead. Competition for the ruck roles at West Coast will be fierce following the retirement of Dean Cox. With Naitanui fit and firing, Scott Lycett and Callum Sinclair appear to be competing for the second ruck spot. Lycett did the majority of the ruck work in the match simulation, but Sinclair looks in excellent shape and is also capable of filling a role up forward.

Can't complain with that although would've preferred to read he blitzed in the match simulation.

I'd rather him blitz it closer to the season proper, like the NAB Challenge.

Not quite an injury but ColSyl banished to host WAFL club Peel Thunder after the Dockers became fed up with him “not meeting the physical requirements for AFL football’’.

Sylvia’s attitude and level of dedication to his training is understood to have been questioned inside the club ever since he arrived at the port following Fremantle’s heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in the 2013 Grand Final.

The move to oust the former Melbourne forward from the club’s summer program underlines how the disastrous free agency punt the Dockers took on him has backfired.

Sylvia, who is believed to be on a $1.2 million deal with Fremantle for three seasons, still has two more years on his contract.

The 29-year-old appears unlikely to add to the six games he played for the Dockers last season or his 163-game career tally.

In a statement late on Thursday, football operations manager Chris Bond said Sylvia “had not been able to get himself to the standard required by Fremantle’’.

“We will continue to work closely with Colin, but he now has the opportunity to go to Peel Thunder and focus on getting himself back to the level required to play in the AFL,’’ Bond said.

The Dockers did not provide a time frame for Sylvia’s return to Fremantle Oval.

Sylvia spent much of last summer in specialist rehabilitation training in a bid to establish required Dockers fitness levels and was twice reported at WAFL level with Peel which complicated his hopes to break into Fremantle’s blue chip midfield.

It’s not the first time the Dockers have taken such action — small forward Michael Walters was banished to Swan Districts three years ago, aged 21, for being overweight.

Walters has since used the episode to transform himself into one of the hardest trainers and most respected players at the club.

It was a different story for troubled youngster Josh Simpson, who was also banished last year before he was delisted at the end of the 2014 season.

I will never understand somebody that has the talent to play professional sport for a living not willing to put in the effort to be fit. Injuries I understand, but jeez, these guys annoy me so much.

Bugger. Was my last pick in FDL Draft from memory when searching far and wide for speculative forward option on list of 33. Now a wasted pick it looks. De-list at mini-draft one I sense. Not happy with him.

Spot on mate. I know there must be a great deal of pressure but pro athletes are generally only good for what 10-15 years if that, so surely you do everything in your powers to set yourself up for as long as you can before you have to join us shmucks in the working force, who are more often than not doing a job we merely tolerate.

Wingard unsure about round one fitness

Harry Thring February 5, 2015 8:00 PM

INJURED Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard won't speculate on his chances of playing in round one as he recovers from knee surgery. The prodigiously talented 21-year-old had a clean out of his knee just over a week ago. He was tipped to miss between four and six weeks of training, making his efforts to face Fremantle on April 5 a race against time.

Helping to launch an AFL 9s competition in Adelaide on Thursday, Wingard said he hadn't laid out a timeline for his return. "Round one is so far away and it's really hard to know [whether I'll play],'' Wingard said. "There's no time frame for my return. I'll come back when it feels good. "Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later, but that's all I can say at the moment. "I've got to let it [the knee] rest and we've got no [return] goals yet."

Wingard tried to train through the injury, which occurred when he landed on the knee at training. The club eventually conceded surgery was required, although Wingard said it was only a minor procedure. "I just had a clean out to tidy the knee up,'' he said.

Griffen is good to go, says Cameron

Ben Guthrie February 5, 2015 7:09 PM

GREATER Western Sydney has rubbished claims star recruit Ryan Griffen has been hampered by a back complaint this pre-season. There had been murmurings that a back issue, which Griffen managed during his last season at the Western Bulldogs in 2014, had worsened in his first few months at the Giants. But GWS coach Leon Cameron was quick to dismiss those concerns. "We couldn't be happier with Ryan Griffen. He's completed 85-90 per cent of our pre-season and he's in fantastic shape," Cameron told 3AW on Thursday evening. "It was actually quite funny when I started to hear that, because it's not the Ryan Griffen I've seen running around and enjoying his pre-season thus far."

Griffen was part of the mega-trade deal that saw emerging forward Tom Boyd head south to the Western Bulldogs in the off-season. Griffen, the Bulldogs' former captain, signed a four-year deal with the Giants to become the club's star recruit and add to a midfield that already contains Callan Ward, Dylan Shiel and Adam Treloar. The trade between the two clubs was struck just days after the Giants had refused the Dogs' request for Boyd.

Cameron admitted the Giants had been in contact with the Bulldogs' medical staff to discuss Griffen's injury history and to gain a better insight into how to best manage his back issue. But Cameron said that process was commonplace. "Any players that look like coming into our football club, we do a thorough medical investigation, like all footy clubs would do. We're no different," Cameron said. "Yes we've looked at the medical history of Ryan Griffen as well. "We will seek that out from them (the Bulldogs) and they've been fantastic."

Cameron said the club would take a careful approach with Griffen during the NAB Challenge to ensure he was ready to go for the season proper. "He's (Griffen) 28 years old, but in terms of a problem with his back this pre-season, I can honestly say he has not missed one session," Cameron said. "As a 28-year-old we've got to be mindful of overcooking him in the pre-season – he's going that well."

The Giants have a first-up encounter with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium in round one on April 5.

Lol I was going to post yesterday something along the lines of "Has someone else other than Sam McClure reported about Griffen because McClure has a history of tweeting and reporting things that turn out to be completely wrong" but thought I would let it go....

Then Cameron comes out and 'rubishes' the reports... lol...

And on a lazy 400k per annum too. Sporting careers are short. Make the most of it, and make some coin whilst you are at it.....

John Ralph "@GregDavis06: "Pearce Hanley to miss half of the 2015 season. Hip injury much worse than first thought. Out for 18 weeks. Back 4 bye." wow"

Will come in round after the bye and will create enough doubt in supercoaches minds to be able to justify upgrading to Rockcliff at his $800,000 price tag.
Well I hope at least.
