Adelaide Crows' Brent Reilly sustains fractured skull in training collision, expected to undergo surgery

Mon 9 Feb 2015, 4:09pm

Adelaide Crows defender Brent Reilly is set to undergo surgery after sustaining a fractured skull in a collision at training on Monday. Reilly, 31, who has played 203 games for Adelaide since making his debut in 2002, was injured in a collision in a routine training session. The club released a statement on Monday afternoon confirming the defender had received medical attention at the training ground before being taken by ambulance to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Reilly, who remained conscious, was diagnosed with a fractured skull and was expected to undergo surgery later on Monday.
Terrible bloody accident. Hope he pulls through relatively unscathed.

Lance Franklin has been talked up all preseason for fitness (as has Tippett), this article indicates some doubt on his knee.

SYDNEY Swans star Lance Franklin is a 50-50 chance to play in the Indigenous All Stars clash against West Coast later this month as he manages his troublesome right knee.

Franklin, who is on a modified training program eight weeks out from the Swans' season-opener, is still on track to play in the first NAB Challenge game, against the Brisbane Lions on March 6.

He will also travel to Perth for the bi-annual AFL Players' Association indigenous camp, but is not certain to play in the exhibition match against the Eagles on February 20.

The Swans travelled to Co*** Harbour last week and completed match simulation training, which was an important checkpoint in determining whether Franklin would be made available to the Indigenous All Stars.

He was pulled out of the Swans' final session on Friday after one hour and iced his right knee, which sidelined him twice late last season.

"This year, it was a modified program for the first couple of weeks and it's still a little bit modified, but I've been able to get out there and get amongst the boys and train," Franklin said in Co*** Harbour.

Franklin and Tippett partnership to get 'better and better'

The All Stars’ last match against an AFL club was in February 2013 when they beat Richmond by 50 points at Traeger Park.

Franklin, then at Hawthorn, was pulled out in the week leading up to the game with a leg injury.

Regardless of his own availability, he said the indigenous camp - which runs from February 15-19 and will involve more than 70 players - was an excellent opportunity for indigenous footballers from rival teams to get together.

"It's been a really good camp over a number of years, and the years I've been a part of it, it's been a really good educational camp," he said.

"I think it recognises what us as indigenous boys bring to the game and the game against West Coast is going to be super over there.

"I was born and bred in WA, so I absolutely love the city and love getting back there.

"I'm looking forward to getting out in the community, visiting schools and hospitals."

West Coast coach Adam Simpson revealed today that he could not put a timeline on when Beau Waters' would play again because it was "too far away".

"It's been a really slow progression. It's never going to be smooth sailing. There's always going to be ups and downs, so we haven't put a date on it," Simpson said.

Waters has not played AFL footy since July 2013 and is in the final year of his contract.

Simpson said that Waters had been involved in training but not in match simulation elements of contact.

"That's another box he's got to tick," Simpson said.

"We want to give him every chance to play senior football but we're not going to put his long-term body at risk.

"Being able to pick up his kids long-term and live a normal life after AFL … the way he plays he needs to be cherry ripe.

"We're aware of that and we'll manage him in the right way."

That's a little concerning. Do we still pick him if named round 1, on the back of possible 'premium scoring' and hope he plays regular footy?

No I don't think we can pick Waters now. It's sounds as if the NAB challenge it totally out of the question for him and he won't be making an appearance until a fair way into the season. I don't think he will be named round 1 and he might only be worth picking up when on the bubble.

Pretty sad to see such a top quality bloke have such a horror run at it.

I did notice in that Beau Water picture that he has one shoulder and one foot that has not been worked on. Cannot touch him until everything have been replaced...........

ps. Eagles will save him for the important part of the season.

Yeah it pains me to say it as a Freo supporter but I always had a soft spot for Waters. Looks like a lot of teams will be having a reshuffle

Pretty sure we were all saying if Waters had a good preseason he's a lock. Now even if he gets taped back together and is wheeled out in time for round one he's a no.

Given his price it will be a fairly awkward reshuffle for some, unless of course quality rookie options emerge in which case it'll be a simple downgrade.

Ibbo and Geary might get another look.

No shuffle for me yet, I still haven't picked a defender! The defense line looks real tough this year, I was going to steer clear of Waters anyway but I've seen quite a few people talking about him

Ibbo was apparently very impressive during match Sims the other day

Feel very sorry for Waters; it seems in real life no one has a bad word to say about him. However, he might just have saved a lot of fantasy game players saying multiple bad words about him during the home and away series.

From a Supercoach point of view I like it. Teams were starting to look same-same

I'm not. I was always wondering why the hell so many of you had him essentially a lock when from what I remember he was so close to retiring last year it was not funny.
I thought maybe I was the crazy one and must have imagined hearing all that last year for so many of you to think he was a serious option for Supercoach.
Do not get me wrong. I hope he did play again but I think his body is stuffed. Like the Wayne Johnston and Dermie Brereton types the use of body like a battering ram eventually catches up with them. Been a wonderful player in time he been at Eagles but he is likely to break down even more than Michael Clarke.

Cheney might have a dicky ticker? With Reilly out for some time keep an eye on the Adelaide defence. We are crying out for the next generation of defenders to come through.
Keeping an eye on Harrison Wigg over the NAB. Is he fit and training Mr Young? I have read some really encouraging things regarding him. Lethal left foot I hear.

"Wigg won SA’s MVP in its carnival-winning under-18 side this year after averaging 19 disposals at 80 per cent efficiency in six games."

“So for us to get Wigg, who is a high quality kicker and a very good decision maker, his combination will be really important.’’
