Good evening _Slip_
I share your concerns with Newton. He's no Tyson, and I'm not starting with him.
I ended up taking Cripps over Sheed. Sheed has the better JS, but I just like Cripps scoring potential, even with the likes of Gibbs to come back into the team. Sheed doesn't seem to be getting scores to match his possessions, which worries me a bit. Some will run with both, or even all 3. Right now I'm running a huge risk/smokey in my Fwd line, so I can't afford two of them. Even if I could, I think I'd still only start Cripps.
Not Aaron Young, he is only 244k, not the huge risk/smokey imo. Can you give us all some hints Rowsus?

Aaron Young still has the vest risk in that team. Excellent NAB form though.

Tex Walker could be a more expensive candidate.

After seeing Nic Naitanui, what are your thoughts on his season ahead and how does he fit into our ruck structure. When selecting rucks should our aim be to pick players who we believe will finish in the top 4 or 5 in total points and keep trading to an absolute miminum? If that's the case should we be considering Naitanui?

Hi vdellu

I don't want to jump in for the great man, but here is what Rowsus wrote yesterday prior to the game. Please also keep in mind it was NN first hit out and none of the rucks including Sandi scored very well in yesterday's game due to minimal stoppages.

For those very keen on NicNat, just keep in mind, this is his first crack, and he's got a very tough opponent.
His record against Freo:
2011 Rnd 8 - 20 HO, 12 Dis, 105 SC - Sandi played
2011 Rnd 18 - 10 HO, 14 Dis, 79 SC
2012 Rnd 9 - 23 HO, 11 Dis, 94 SC - Sandi played
2012 Rnd 19 - 25 HO, 8 Dis, 81 SC
2013 Rnd 16 - 19 HO, 6 Dis, 69 SC - Sandi played
2014 Rnd 7 - 13 HO, 7 Dis, 54 SC - Sandi played
2014 Rnd 15 - 15 HO, 9 Dis, 76 SC - Sandi played
I'm not saying pick him, or don't pick him, I'm just saying keep in mind he has a very tough assignment today. If you love him in your team, don't be too critical of todays performance, unless it is absolutely dreadful. I hope he plays well! :)

Hey Row,

What do you make of Jimmy Bartel? He has averaged 102 over the last 5 seasons but his NAB games have him averaging 120+ at almost 180 pts/tog100%

I know he is supposedly going to spend more time in the guts, but do you think he can average 105+ maybe creep up to 110? Or would you say another 100-105 season is more likely?

I saw him as more of an upgrade target and dont want to get sucked in by pre season games..but he is looking damn good!

Hey Rowsus,

Just wondering what your thoughts are on Mitch Hallahan? Considering him as a midpriced option in the midfield, someone to score well early and make some quick cash, but wondering if for the extra $40-50K, a Wells, Rich, etc would be a better pick over him?

Thanks :)

Thanks Rowsus I was thinking the same thing. Can't wait to hear who your smokey is once the season starts.
You know this will only start everyone trying to guess who this player is???

I will start the bidding with Claye Beams?
It's Colin Sylvia isn't it  In all seriousness I know you like to be different ... so maybe Michael Walters? Actually you are Demons man and Walters might be a bit too pricey so my guess is Jeff Garlett who is avg. 92 in Nab.
I'll have a guess with Josh Kelly...
to continue on with the guessing game is it jack martin or dean towers?
My guess is Aaron Young.
I've got a mate who's had a couple of looks at him, but in the end decided against it.

Mitch Honeychurch?

Aaron Young it is! He is far from locked though.
Well done Blossoms, I didn't think anyone would guess, and I didn't think too many had looked at him seriously. Yes, he has been vested a lot, and continues to be a vest candidate, but not many people would realise exactly how low his TOG% was last season, or how good his SC/100%TOG actually is either!

Rowsus,

Something left-field for you...

Tell me I'm not crazy in considering Eddie Betts (Ade) for my FWD line?

I understand that going into his 11th season of AFL that he's probably set his scoring pattern (coupled with the small forward curse) and we are to expect an SC average of around 80. However, I can't help but notice that maybe he has found a new leash of life with the new coach. His 3 NAB showing bodes well from an SC scoring perspective (126 average), but I did noticed that we was chasing and harassing a lot more than usual which translated to record numbers of CPs. Actually, he averaged around 10CPs (nearly 2/3 of his total possessions) per game during the NAB compared to his career average of 6CPs per game. I believe this is quite significant in that he's getting to a lot more contest and winning his fair share of contested possessions.

I was amazed at his durability...apart from 2013, he has only missed 1 game since 2009! Also, you could confidently mark him down for at least 35 goals if he played the whole season.

At $426,600 he's very awkwardly priced and yes there are probably better options, but give me a reliable FWD player who will average at least 80 (with upside) and I think it's a risk worth taking.

Anyhow, just pouring over NAB stats looking for potential 'gems' and 'bargains' and thought I would present this to you for some unbiased feedback.

Hmmm, no Beams in the top 10 overall for points scored.
Pretty much what I was hoping to see, in terms of my starting MIDs.
No. I'm not confident he can cop the extra pressure, and play 22 games. He should still be a gun in the averages though.

would love your views on tom mcdonald

have noticed his pre season scores and kicking efficiency have been quite good especially with frost in the team

pre season wonder or gold?

same with cam sutcliffe thanks in advance

to continue on with the guessing game is it jack martin or dean towers?
I'm never too keen on KPP Defs, and that is what T McD will always be. Frost actually doesn't have too much affect on him, as Frost is playing more Fwd than Def so far this season.
Sutcliffe is interesting. He certainly seemed to be playing a different role yesterday in the last NAB. He could be worth a punt, and certainly before T McD. There's no guarantee that Sutcliffe won't go back to his half back role when Barlow comes back, but he could still be a great pick this season. He's not for me, but I can understand anyone taking a punt on him.

If you liked NN before yesterday, I didn't see anything that should change your mind in that game. He's not for me, as I think he won't be a 20-21 game 100+ Ruck, and that's what I'd want at his price. I think you should be starting a Ruck at R1 that you are confident will be a top 3 Ruck for the season, and then your R2 depends on your strategy for the season. Either a cheaper place holder that goes up in value, or take a crack at a "set and forget" pair. Both strategies are viable, and both have good points and bad points.
Yes, you should be considering NicNat, I'm just not as confident in him as I was, but that is not due to yesterday's game.

Hey Mike,
Bartel's looking very good, and locked in at F2 in my team, behind Gray. I believe he can be somewhere in the 105-108 area this season, and that's gold for a Fwd.

Hi Rowsus,
Luv reading what you have to say, you give a lot Rowan.
This is the time that I invoke what I may call the 'Shiels Rule' well 1/2 Shiels Rule maybe. You are occasionally incorrect. Beams has been subject to the pressure of playing before huge crowds, and big occasions on a regular basis, a premiership midfielder. He has performed consistently well on the big stage. With no rhyme or reason, he will kill it this year.
Have a great year

Was he the first tag at the Pies week in week out, Court?

I agree with Rowsus here, I think he will drop in price and personally have picked Sloane over him due to an easier first half of the season draw. The ins and outs of a new midfield also need to be sorted, as well as a new coach etc. Still expect him to be top ten this year, just don't want him in my start team :)

Hey Benno,
I think there is only one situation where you should consider a Midpricer in your Mids. You have some Cash left over, and it won't get you a Prem upgrade anywhere else, and you want to upgrade one of your more expensive Rookies. The Midfield both gives us the most points, and also the most money raising opportunities, so if you are going to use a Midpricer in their, you better be confident you'll get both!
GC have a bit of depth in their Midfield, and it's hard to see Hallahan getting a great crack in there, unless they have an injury or two. Ablett/O'Meara spring to mind. Neither have played yet, and they probably sit at 1st and 3rd/4th on the GC rotation roster. That doesn't leave a lot of time for Hallahan if they both come back quickly. I would only take him if you believe one or both of those 2 will be missing more than we think. As for Wells and Rich, you need to think they can average close to 100 to take either, and I don't think they will.

Thanks mate. Young has been in my side for the past couple of weeks now too. Still not too sure though if he will get enough game time. Maybe with Wingard out early and if Monfries gets a suspension he will have his chance.

THCLT,
keep in mind, that there are virtually no tags run during the NAB, and Eddie was running around, not being as closely checked as usual. That will all change. Stick to the rule, small Fwds that don't get good Mid time are SC poison. He will score too many 50's and 60's to go with the odd 100+ score.

Hi Guys,
yes, it was definitely the pressure of being the number one tag target, with no Pendlebury there to draw it away from him that I was alluding to. Tags can be physically draining, and while I will be surprised if Beams isn't a 115 player this season, I will alos be surprised if he can play 21 games. His body has shown it is suspect before, and the extra toll of a physically draining tag each week has me thinking he may only play 17 or 18 games this season, as the extra pressure takes it's toll.
