Haven't heard Max Gawn mentioned. DPP status, awkward price and has had injuries but right age and tore up points in seconds last year. If he stays fit how many games do you think he will get and what will his output be? Jamar on last legs and Roos pushing youngsters through.

...Gawn has a number of players to compete against to get a regular spot, even though Melbourne's talls seem to be eternally injured! (Long suffering Melbourne fan here!). Not many people realise that Melbourne as a Club had the fifth most Hitouts last season. not bad for a Club struggling for fit and in form talls! Gawn actually has a game with 48 Hitouts in AFL (against Geelong Rnd 16, 2013.). His HO/100%TOG in 2013 was just 24, and SC/100%TOG just 87. In 2014 those numbers were only 21 and 88, so hardly inspiring. He is only 23, so young for a Ruck, and if you can believe the available stats, his hitouts in some VFL games last season were literally off the chart, this includes a game with 80 (***? that must be wrong! Are there even 80 contests in some games?!) against Bendigo on 12/7/2014, he also had a 63 and a 57 in games, and 52 against McEvoy (McEvoy only had 25!) and Box Hill!. If Fitzpatrick and/or Jamar don't come up, Gawn could be an option, though it's probably a year or two early yet....

Just had a read through the previous posts on the topic. I hold my hands and say I'm a relative SC strategy novice but the more research I do about the ruck this year the more I keep coming back to the same idea... I'm think I'm going to take a gamble here and start with NicNat and TBC, R1 & R2. I plan on having Read or O'Brien as rookie R3 and not having any DPP cover up front either. Is this total madness? WellI just don't see the benefit of starting with one of the premo rucks with the new scoring system. I'm thinking that most players value may decline from this and the money can be spent better elsewhere. Assuming NN is in decent physical shape come round 1, and its far from certain, its a risk for the opening half dozen games or so. By then I'd be looking to upgrade anyway, hopefully making a little cash from TBC on the way. I can't understand putting Bellchambers in a forward spot with the other quality options available.
If its completely the wrong way to go about it I'd appreciate the input and criticism! I'll take all comments as advice & a learning curve!

I think it's a very valid way to go about it. The forward line seems to have very good premiums and some very nice rookies as well. Anything in between could be pointless as long as your rucks don't get injured early. I have not had any interest in TBC all pre-season and still don't, too injury prone and in my opinion he's not even Esssendon's best ruckman. If Nic Nat doesn't get up for round one and is confirmed out for 2 or 3 weeks i think Lycett becomes very relevant.

I will be buying the key, but not fitting the lock unless I need to.
If Nicnat doesn't get up, I'll most likely be buying the key, fitting the lock, but leaving the key under the mat, probably until the byes*..

*Lycett would need to survive until the byes in this scenario..!!

Would you plan be to move Lycett to Fwd and upgrade to a premo Ruc or just upgrade Lycett to a premo? (or something else?)

I'm thinking along similar lines. My plan at the moment  is to lock in a solid R1 like Goldy, a r/f R3 (O'Brien or Read) and a r/f R2 (Lycett if NN doesn't get up, otherwise TBC) with a view to trading out a forward rookie after the first 4/5 rounds for Kreuzer if he's back or whoever is emerging and roll Lycett/TBC forward to become my F7 eventually which would continue to provide r/f cover. (Slugus was also considering something like this in the Player X v Y thread). Risky for the first few rounds but at least it gives you a chance to see how the RUC scene is panning out and not waste a forward spot.

Sounds like a pretty solid plan to me!

Yep, wait and see which ruck takes the lead this year and get them in around the byes as R1 - and someone like Jacobs if he can repeat last year at least has the perfect bye round for this. Lycett would ideally move to the forward-line and becomes F6 or eventually maybe even F7/R3

Anyone considering Blicavs at all? The bloke has improved year on year (as a player) and I am not sure he has reached his full potential as a player. Solid Nab numbers so far considering his TOG. If he ends up playing mainly back I think his TOG could end up at 85 - 90%.

Any Geelong supporters able to shed some light on what role he will have this year?

I am strongly considering Mummy as my team looks stronger with him in even though experienced others are staying clear! High risk of missing games or being a late out but has proven he can produce some monster scores - and as GWS midfield keeps improving his hit outs to advantage should be improving. If he gets injured, hopefully he will have a high enough value to swap for another premium. If he is a late out due to general soreness I could minimise risk by having Phillips, Lobb, or Downie as R3 ... So my question is which of those three are looking like being next in line?

Cheers Misfit. Confirms who I thought.

No worries, be wary though, he played one out for much of last year whilst a clear 2nd ruck in Giles sat in NEAFL, a fwd gave him rest, don't be surprised if we play Stewart for that role..

Thanks. What I am trying to look at is what happens if Mummy doesn't play as opposed to who may play second string along side him .. Or are you suggesting Stewart could play the sole ruck role ahead of the others in Mummy's absence?

I am not a strategic genius at this so take this with a grain of salt.

Our easy run has me convinced that Mumford is a smart starting ruck, I simply plan to trade him out when he "goes on leave", or be able to have Ryder back in the team in the fwd line..

Rowsus wrote earlier today in his Q's to Rowsus regarding his view.
I think it may prove unwise to go into the season without some form of reliable ruckcover, it could be the soft underbelly of many. In reality it is a weakness that should be covered in my view. No point having Panzers charging across Russia without winter clothing for the troops, is a long campaign.

It is for this purpose we have a trade button, there is always another tank in the garage, you just have to be committed to trade out injuries.
