Carlton will be without Bryce Gibbs for the rest of the season, with the vice-captain set to undergo surgery today.

Gibbs tore his left pectoral muscle late in the third quarter of Friday night’s match against Richmond.

Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay says after weighing up several options it was decided surgery is the best course of action.

"If we let Bryce's injury heal naturally, he would have still been out for up to eight weeks and could have risked further damage," McKay said.

"By having the procedure now it will ensure Bryce is fully recovered and ready to go for the start of the pre-season.

"Obviously he is clearly disappointed that his season is over, but what this does do is give some of our younger players an opportunity to put their hand up for selection.”

Meanwhile Dennis Armfield will also have surgery this week after suffering a broken arm in the match.

Armfield will have a plate inserted into his right arm, which will sideline him for four weeks.
****ing hell! atleast some kids can play now (Hopefully Byrne). and i guess when can elevate a rookie?

I'm not so convinced as some that there was nothing in it at all, but I don't really see how the MRP can sanction him given the dismissal of the Walker one.
"Contact between Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell and the Adelaide Crows’ Taylor Walker from the second quarter of Thursday’s match was assessed. Walker approaches Mitchell to shepherd him from his teammate as Adelaide moves the ball forward. Michell raises his arm and leg to protect himself and brace for contact, and makes contact with Walker. It was the view of the panel that Mitchell’s actions were not reportable and no further action was taken."

That's the Taylor Walker one. How could this one be viewed any differently - especially given it was FAR LESS SEVERE?
Mitchell does this a few times a year, did it to Scott Thompson off the ball last year.
Its an awful habit but they havent suspended him yet so why now?
Agree with the above. Rubbing him out for the Fyfe hit would make an already inconsistent system even more inconsistent. Doubt he'll miss weeks but the attention he's copped would be enough for him to think twice next time he decides to raise his knee to brace.

I think a lot of people are being too precious. If he chooses to do it and gets someone in the groin / torso / head that's one thing. If we are complaining about being kneed in the thigh we may as well start getting hysterical about being punched in the arm.

Are we all forgetting that the other guy is coming at him with the intention to bump him front on?

Either way if Mitchell gets games or gets off, we can all agree hes a bit of a grub. Should get a game IMO, its not an accident if the same thing keeps happening.
Do not agree with this. Great player, don't see why bracing himself should give him weeks at all.

I hope this helps Selwood get out of suspension:

NORTH Melbourne defender Sam Wright believes the tackle Joel Selwood laid on him in Saturday night's clash against Geelong has been blown out of proportion and shouldn't land the Cats' skipper in hot water.

He has to be suspended. It's like attacking an injured player. If a guy is pinned to the ground and defenseless you shouldn't be allowed to chicken wing them. It's irrelevant if Wright is now trying to help him out, it's an ugly look and nobody wants to see it. The potential for serious injury is significant. The North team mate who ran in and tackled them made it a whole lot worse when he jumped on them as well.

Probably getting a bit off track here but what's worse, the act of bumping which has always been part of our game or the act of meeting a bump with a knee rather than meeting it with a bump as has always been the case.

I dunno, it's the act of him raising his knee is what irks me. Call me a traditionalist but i don't think it's got a place in the game.

Dont get me wrong he is a great player, but hes also a dirty player from time to time. Nothing wrong with bracing yourself, what he does is not bracing though. People turn side on to brace, not swing their knees in.

Two wrongs don't make a right. The first incident could be viewed an somewhat of an accident and the benefit of the doubt given to Mitchell. However repeat occurrences may be viewed in a different light and if it is considered to be something undesirable then now would be the time to take a stance and apply a penalty in order to say it is not acceptable. It may be inconsistent with the first decision, but a firm decision now would create a solid base for future decisions rather than something wishy-washy which will just leave the door open for continued uncertainty.

Yeah for sure. I guess I was viewing it from a legal precedent point of view but pretty sure the MRP doesn't work off the same rules. Honestly i'd be surprised if he does cop a week but crazier things have happened!

No ones doubting what a great player he is,not sure thats relevant.
Impossible to argue that he isnt a bit over competitive at times, wouldnt be many guys he hasnt smacked in the head
You can say thats all part of the game but kneeing guys has never been part of this game.

From an unbiased observer, imo he crosses the line fairly often.
Is that needed to be succesful at this level, clearly Clarko thinks so & its hard to argue.

Good to see Fyfe still in the running for the Brownlow... Needs to be a little more careful.
If he does something stupid again and gets a one week suspension I hope people don't whinge about him being ineligible. If you're dumb enough to do get in trouble three times and get a one week suspension you won't have any sympathy from me.
