Knowing what happened last year with our favourite R/Fs in Ryder and TBC, the R/F will get injured the week you need them for cover.

Considering how injury prone Tippett has proven to be, I wouldn't be surprised if he misses when you need him most and it will cost you both a trade and lost points. Safe to say, I definitely won't be touching the R/Fs this year. I only see value in West as a rookie option if Martin ends up missing games.

Everyone will have their own opinion and reason, but for me the R/F is more of a 'peace of mind' insurance for the scenario whereby one of my rucks is unavailable for the short term (1-2 weeks) either through a niggling injury or suspension, hence saving trades. It's by no means an absolute necessity for my team, however, if there's a forward that interests me and happens to have R/F, then he 'glows' that little bit brighter.

In the scenario you provided, would you still go ahead and trade if the injury was only a 1-2 weeks and potentially another trade to bring that player back if he happens to be the best ruckman?

It's an interesting scenario isn't it? It's why I've always been an advocate of 2 durable high scoring rucks as R1 and R2.
Injury prone ruckmen just end up causing headaches, you end up burning valuable trades for 1-2 week scenarios like you mentioned.
In a world where Goldstein and Jacobs didn't exist, I would be very, very tempted to run an R/F like Tippett, as the situation where you need cover would arise a lot more often.
But if Goldstein/Jacobs go into the season fit, its very unlikely they will play less than 22 games.
Goldstein "might" get rested again but history suggests those 2 will play close to every game again this year.

Answering your question on if the injury was 1-2 weeks, I would almost certainly sideways to the next best available, and durable ruck option, or potentially bring an R/F like Tippett!

I will happily have a bet with you, that one or both will play less than 22 games in that scenario. Being fit in Rnd 1 is no guarantee of no injury during the season!

Here are the number of Rucks to play every game.
2015: Jacobs and Blicavs played 21 out of 21 (Ade v Geel cancelled in 2015)
2014: Jacobs
2013: 8 Rucks did it, including Jacobs again.
2012: Cox
2011: Ryder
2010: 6 Rucks did it

That's 19 Rucks in 6 seasons. The chances of any particular Ruck managing it in a nominated season are slimmish.

Mobile Franklin stars in Swans' scratch match

LANCE Franklin has continued his solid pre-season with an impressive performance in the Sydney Swans' intra-club practice match on Friday.

Opposed to off-season recruit Michael Talia for most of the 40-minute hit out in Sydney's inner west, Franklin moved well, covered plenty of territory and won numerous possessions around the ground playing as a leading forward.

The three-time Coleman medallist also laid several big tackles and set up scoring opportunities for his teammates with his pressure, showing off a defensive side of his game that is largely underrated by the footy public.

Franklin had a minor finger operation before the Christmas break but appeared untroubled during the spirited scratch match.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Buddy played against Talia who was in and out of our team last year.

All would also have a high PE ratio meaning there is high growth potential but it comes with risk of being able to sustain earnings. Two of three are a maybe for me. Not touching the old man Harvey.

Harvey could absolutely hit the wall and average 70. He's nearly 40 years of age, couldn't blame him if it all came to a grinding halt this year. No DP either this year. I've thought about him on account of him being ~50k underpriced on his history, but is it worth the risk for someone at his incredibly advanced age?

I'm a no too. His teeth are a bit too long for mine! I do believe boomer is a very rare exception, can't see him dropping off however time catches everyone. he will still be tagged in some games in 2016!

Any thoughts on Higgins? Losing DPP hurts, but was a solid performer last year? Could take on a more senior role this year after slotting in nicely?

I think end of the day mate, Higgins hasn't as much upside as others this year so its a no from me. More of an upgrade if the price is right maybe? looks far more conditioned these days so perhaps the injury curse is behind him. I wont be touching him most likely ever again! His burn marks remain hot, and I still can feel the burn from all those years and times ago!

However this line is a bit of concern...

The midfield star remains on a modified program as part of an understandably cautious build-up to the home and away season, but Scott has been buoyed by his progress.

Will have to keep an eye on any training reports, as well as be misdirected by his Nab Cup form

On his day will belt out 160 then next week a 50 ......his std deviation is to great ....i need consistency & that's what i look for primarily
