Any Cats fans have any insight on Cockatoo? How's he looking in the preseason? Is he best 22? Can he lock one of those spots opened by SJ/Kelly/Stokes?
With all of the new recruits and a lot of players returning from injuries I have to be honest and say that I really can't be certain who are in the best 22. I think that Cockatoo will play a lot of games this year but I would be surprised if he manages to "lock a spot" in the side.

Scoring wise I think he will be hit and miss and at his price tag, I think that there will be better options available.

I would be happy if his performance in the NAB makes me look like liar. ;)

Thanks for that! His NAB performances might be the key indicator.

17 Crozier, Hayden 11 games, 64.9 TOG, 4 green, 1 red vest

Any Freo supporters on here able to provide an opinion on this bloke. When I first saw him I thought that he had something special and could become a star (have not completely written him off yet). I have had him in and out of my SC side for a few weeks.

Have considered him, awkward price if he stays fringe. Don't trust Lyon either...

He's currently "training with the Midfield", but realistically, he probably needs at least 2 big injuries to become SC relevant. He's probably even 2nd in line as the small Forward behind Walters, so he might need 3 injuries. Will be a decent player down the track, but will need luck this season.

Hi guys, long time reader of the site (has helped me plenty through last year) and hoping to become a much more frequent poster this year!

Now this might seem quite left-field but has anybody considered Mark Hutchings? Watched him during the finals last year and looked quite a handy, contested player. I feel he is under-priced (3 green vests/injury-plagued pre-season) and could potentially average between 90-95 if he nails a spot in the senior side IMO. If he ends up achieving this, at 385k, could be a handy F6 keeper which would allow for spending more across the other lines for 'safer' premiums. The mid/fwd eligibility is also a bonus.

I had a look at previous seasons and the only concerns I can see are him being used as a tagger/role player and low game counts. He's played 38 games over three seasons (9 in '13, 16 in '14 and 13 in '15) and will be 25 during the early part of the season. He averaged 89.9 in his first season, 73.3 in his second (second year blues?/sub vests) and 71.5 last year.

Last year, if we take out his vested games in rounds 7 (35 points), 15 (12 points) and 16 (40 points) his average actually pushes up to 89.3ppg from round 17 to the grand final (10 games). In his final 10 games he had returned scores of 84, 60, 106, 89, 121, 58, 110, 110, 96 and 59. The scores of 60 (vs Gold Coast, draw) 58 (vs Adelaide, loss by 57 points) and 59 (vs Hawthorn in the GF, loss by 48) has me a tad worried that if the Eagles struggle so may Hutchings. However, the 106 was a loss to Hawthorn which gives me some hope he could be ok.

I find him to be an interesting prospect even though he does come with some ??? as every other mid-pricer does. He'll be one I watch with interest throughout the NAB Challenge. What does everybody else think?

Hutchings can find the ball okay, but ideally he wouldn't be in their best 22. The recruitment of Redden (and to a lesser extent Jetta) doesn't help his cause. You've done well to extract some numbers which make him look promising, but he's more of a depth player for them.

Still, if the spot is there he's clearly ahead of Lucas (who can't get a game), and you could potentially have a decent scoring forward if one or more of the midfield regulars aren't playing.

I know some West Coast supporters and they would prefer he not line up in the 22 at all, given he gets caught with the ball when the pressure is really on. Cyril mowed him down a beauty in the Grand Final.

Like you said, watch with interest how the the West Coast midfield looks during preseason games.

With Roughy out for half the year, I wonder whether it will have a negative impact on Gunston? He will now cop the number one defender every week.

Also, hello Tim O'Brien?

Ooh Gunston becomes little more relevant? I had him at a less than 5% chance of being in my team as a POD until I heard that. Might be closer to 20% now.

What are your thoughts on Gunston now, mate?
Hmmm, it's an interesting one. I don't think it'll be too much of a worry as Clarkson is always ahead of the pack. He's innovative and creative, and no matter what we speculate he will come up with a completely new that will catch the other teams/coaches off guard.

I really like Sicily, he has a lot of Gunston about him, plays a very similar way also from the very small sample size of his games I've seen.
Tim O'Brien I don't know a great deal about, I know the Hawks rate him highly as he was given the number 23 after Buddy left. From memory he is also pretty lean, so he isn't a bulking forward like big Rough. So I think it'll be a bit of wait and see during the NAB Challenge, also have the possibility of throwing Frawley forward (which I don't like) which is an option, and bringing in another young defender, with the likes of Litherland, Heatherly and Brand all young and backed to become really good young players.

Maybe more game time for ceglar and possibly Fitzpatrick?
Ceglar definitely plays, even before the injury to Roughie.
And yes potentially Fitzpatrick is looked at, but I'm not sure he is going to be a natural forward for us.
More likely to see the scenarios I listed above I reckon.

Not sure it makes him more relevant.

Will get the best defender and won't be as free to roam the ground.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Spangher fill Roughies role and Brand to play back
