FREMANTLE INJURY UPDATE

- Nathan Fyfe is expected to return to full training in the coming days as he recovers from a leg and back injury.
- The Dockers are taking a cautious approach with Harley Bennell who has a history of calf issues. The club wants his body to be conditioned in the right way so he can be a long term player for them. He is on track.
- Michael Johnson has been spending time in the rehab group because the club has been managing him given his back and hamstring injuries he suffered in the last two seasons.
- Alex Pearce is making slow progress as he recovers from shin soreness. Pearce has had his running monitored by the club's sport science team in recent weeks but the club does not think he will miss much football this season.
- Michael Apeness is getting closer to returning to full training as he recovers from a knee injury.

Gold Coast star David Swallow has said that he returned from a knee injury too early last season and he will be taking a more cautious approach as he prepare for the 2016 season.
Swallow only played 6 games last season after two separate ruptures of his Posterior Cruciate Ligament which both required surgery.
"I rushed back too early last year and probably paid the price for it".
"It's never enjoyable being on the sidelines, especially when the team isn't winning many games. I just wanted to get out there and help, so I tried to speed things up to get back out there earlier".
"In my first few years in general I probably didn't look after myself as well as I could have and always wanted to train as hard as I could".
"Hopefully I'm a bit smarter now, listening to my body more and being more patient to make sure I get my body right so I can stay out there longer".
"I'm feeling better after each session. I still get a few grumbles from (the knee), but it's just going to take time to get used to running again. Hopefully it keeps responding better with the more work I do".

GWS Giants release statement after Cam McCarthy granted extended leave for "personal reasons"
More soon @superfooty

Gun GWS forward Cameron McCarthy has been granted indefinite leave by the club to go home to his native Western Australia to deal with personal issues.

Giants CEO Dave Matthews said in a statement that McCarthy “cannot currently meet the demands of being an AFL footballer.”

McCarthy desperately wanted to be traded to Fremantle last October, but GWS refused his request with the talented youngster still having a year remaining on his contract.

This is so poor by GWS. They should have got whatever they could by trading him to Fremantle when it was clear that he wanted out. Probably would have got a first round draft pick for him.

Now he will probably 'retire' only to end up on Fremantle's list next year and GWS will get nothing in return.

I think Freo offered 2 first round picks.

Just a heads up: Luenberger hasn't trained for that last couple of weeks. Pick him at your peril.

I agree, very poor by GWS.

I can understand that they don't want to let their young guns leave, but lets be honest, they couldn't have possibly thought they where going to keep them all.

They knew he was desperate to come home and not coping well and still where arrogant and refused to trade him when they had a good offer and could well have increased that offer even more in their favor. They deserve to get nothing for him.

Roo: Selwood Has Had Surgery
Adelaide legend says Geelong tried to keep captain's operation secret

Geelong captain Joel Selwood has undergone surgery on his troublesome right foot and the Cats have tried to keep it a secret, according to Triple M Footy’s Mark Ricciuto.

For much of the pre-season, Selwood has been battling the effects of plantar fasciitis which is a condition that involves pain and inflammation of a thick band of tissue, called the plantar fascia, that runs across the bottom of the foot.

“He (Selwood) has had a clean up on his foot, they (Geelong) were trying to hide it,” Ricciuto told Roo & Ditts For Breakfast on Friday morning.

Earlier this week, Selwood said that he remained hopeful of being fit for the first round against Hawthorn but conceded he would almost certainly miss the entire NAB Challenge series.

"Obviously I've had the lay-off before Christmas and I'll start joining back in with the boys in the not-too-distant future, and just work away at it until round one and be ready for round one," Selwood said on Monday.

"It hasn't been ideal. Frustrating? I've probably been lucky that the boys have been training the way that they have, that it hasn't been too frustrating.

"I've got to look after myself a bit, make sure I'm doing the right things and looking after my body."

The Cats’ first practice match of the year is against Collingwood at Simonds Stadium on February 26.

Thanks Zimmer - any idea what's wrong? Seems to have been kept very quiet. Bit going on down there, admittedly.

I Remember reading about 3 or 4 weeks ago that Leuenberger is still having issues with his achilles, and at that point hadn't done much training and wasn't likely to until around this time. Also said Essendon will have to manage his Achilles situation through the season.

Can't remember exactly which site I saw it on but I'll have a look and see if I can find it again. Not good signs either way.

Thanks everyone. He's been in my draft sides to date in a couple of different capacities, but it might soon be time to remove him.
