My current set-up below:

Defs: Obviously it's rookie dependent, so let's see how we go
Mids: A little deep, but plenty of value there
Rucks: To Goldy or not to Goldy isn't my question, but who is his partner. I'm almost certain I'll go for a non-Lobbe/Tippet answer
Fwds: Have been set this way for a while.

Hey there jaca,

Not bad at all :)

A few similarities with my current setup, however I have gone for Lobbe as R2 and have Bartel at D3.

I see you've gone for the set and forget rucks and plan around that. Love that midfield (albeit the large spend of Fyfe, Danger plus Goldy in rucks) but has left you thin in DEF.

If Mal comes on it may be a great move though...

Agree in most to all of the above, I was just suggesting how a side could look if you stayed away from top priced players. High risk but who is too say it can't work!
If you go with it Shaahorn...you have my respect!

This should be in the how good is my team thread! I would only question Harvey. I've seen a few comments around Harvey breaking the games record making a difference but we all saw how Fletcher crawled to 400. North have a really tough second half of the year and if he shows any sign of slowing down Brad Scott won't be thinking about the games record.

He has the R15 Bye, so that could be a good opportunity to trade him out if needed.

Harvey is a freak. Everyone knows it. Completely different prospect to Fletch. As you said, Inspector Gadget crawled to 400...Boomer RACED to 400.

If he slows say...10-15%..which is likely (father time catches us all eventually), he becomes a damaging small forward.

In saying that...if you pick Boomer...you pick him as a keeper. If you're planning to trade him out, choose someone else (which is what I've done after having him in my team for so long).

DEF: Shaw, McVeigh, Bartell, Francis, Brown, Collins (Wagner, Broad)

MID: Fyfe, Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Ablett, Rockliff, Petracca, Freeman, Cunningham (Keays, Mathieson, Hibberd)

RUCK: Goldstein, Martin (King)

FWD: Deledio, Martin, Zorko, Kerridge, Kommer, Ahern (Grimley, Adams)

Premos in bold and rookies place holders except for Grimley who I plan to use as ruck cover either at R3 or in the forward line swinging with a F/R donut. Haven't decided yet.

Just had a quick browse of the RMT thread and it's interesting to see that there aren't many allowing for too many $150k+ rookies in their teams.

If I may, I'd strongly recommend playing around with a few as at this stage I can see anywhere between 6-12 potentially becoming relevant across all lines.

I see a lot of teams batting 4 deep in Def and Fwd and almost 5-6 deep in the Mids and I'm not sure that come NAB we'll still have that luxury without missing some of the more expensive/potentially higher scoring rookies like Heppell, Wines, Polec, Cripps, Tyson etc of yesteryear.

It's hard trying to squeeze them in without seeing the NAB as it feels like you're weakening your starting team, but I feel there might be some unrealistic teams going around atm that come NAB will have to structurally change.

Hopefully the cheapie will dominate, but history generally suggests there's a need for some of the more expensive rookies in our starting squads.

Keep up the good work!

Good point. To add further I've kept a fair bit of fat in my rookie placeholders atm, and I figure if I don't actually end up needing it for my final rookies I can always use it to upgrade a premium I'm a little unsure on for the likes of Shaw or Lids etc.

Agree 100% sven, certainly have 1 or 2 fall-back plans in place when all is said and done.

Good points definitely, earlier today I changed my structure from having 2 200k-ish 'rookies', to 5 as a just-in-case mechanism.

Still have 13 definite keepers, a good chance for 14 and perhaps 15 so I'm not going to touch it much until we see some players running around.

Looks a-lot like my team atm

Except Shaw = Malceski
Martin = Lobbe
Zorko = Barlow

and take a rookie out of the mids and add libba+crouch

What does everyone think would work better of;

DEF: Shaw, McVeigh, Bartel and a rookie

OR

DEF: Simpson, Kolodashnij, Bartel and Malceski

as my top 4 defenders?

Wouldn't touch a mid price player with a ten foot pole personally.
Really the only mid pricer in my team is crouch.
Malceski is a proven fallen prem
Libba is a returning from inj prem
Lobbe is a lone ruck that gets it back prem
So the only risk I see I'm taking is crouch who could be omeara(see Libba)

I wouldn't think of Lobbe as a premium, a clear stepping stone.

D - Laird, KK, Bartel, Malceski, Brown, Hartley (Bonner, Collins)
M - Fyfe, Danger, Gaz, TMitchell, Rockliff, Gresham, Kerridge, Cuningham (Jansen, Petracca, Phillips)
R - Martin/Jacobs, Lobbe (Wyatt)
F - Montagna, Gunston, Barlow, Buddy, Simpkin, Curnow (Adams, Grimley)

Can't decide between Martin and Jacobs, leaning Martin atm.

Going against the masses by having none of Libba, O'Meara or Crouch.

I think Simpkin could be the biggest surprise packet. To me, he's a lock over someone like Parish.

here we go, ready for feedback good and bad!

D - Shaw, Laird, Bartel, Eski, RRRR
M - Danger, Pendles, Ablett, Rocky, Libba, RRRRR
R - Goldy, Blicavs, R
F - Joey, Chopsticks (i heard that on hear and lol'd), Dollhaus, Barlow, RRRR

Exactly $0 left in bank, pending rookie changes.

Thoughts:

1. Eski - heard Rocket Eade interviewed a couple of times and said Eski was in terrible shape last year (injuries and fitness) and looks the goods. I trusted the same info on Swannie last year and he produced so i'm going with the same premise.
2. Laird - can improve so he beats out McVeigh and Simpson. Slight risk but sentiment seems to be that he gets better.
3. Gaz - are you kidding? it's Gaz, avoid him at your peril. saw him the other day and looked fit and ready to roll!!!
4. Shaw - killed me last year and just dominates in the backs. willing to take the risk!
5. Blicavs - interchanges reduced, he's a cardio beast and i think will improve again. Beats out Stef who's said a few times he'll suffer from the changes (although i'm hopeful not and he has good endurance but Blic is cheaper and i think has more potential to improve).

The rest seems pretty cookie cutter. Look forward to comments! Thank you!!
bump so this post doesn't get lost ;-)

Hey dicksilverman, am considering Eski myself, do you know where he made those comments? Just would like to hear them myself :)
