I don't want to start Danger, but I have him and probably will keep it that way given the extremely high ownership rate and his great early round for captaincy. Interested to hear your thoughts on it.
Anyways, structure good, premo picks are mostly good. However, don't like Houli, don't like Riewoldt, don't like Goldstein, don't like Brodie, don't like Ainsworth.
Cheers Prochard!
Personally i think it comes down to what you're willing to pay for Danger and what average you would be happy with from that cash. The odds are against him backing up his almost 132 average last season and i think it is more likely he will revert back to 115-120ppg. This should mean he will be much cheaper at some point, hopefully at the byes. If he averages 115-120 to the byes and is 100k cheaper i guess that could be a win for me (depending on how my alternative scores).
Only 5 players have backed up a 120+ season. Ablett did it consistently. Swan and Pendlebury managed 4 120+ seasons in a row, Fyfe back up his 122ppg in 2014 with 124ppg in 2015 and Hayes averaged 122ppg in 2005 and 120ppg in 2006. I think every other player to average 120+ (since 2005) has regressed the following season. Goodes, Cox, Brown, Judd, Bowden, Montagna, Bartel, Dal Santo, Hodge, Goddard, Watson, Selwood, JPK, Rockliff and Beams (
taken from Rowsus' Fallen Premium thread. Having said all that, i may buckle in the next few weeks.
Houli isn't on the top of my list of defenders, but most of the others make me not want to pick them. Whether it's age, price, unproven, KPD, injury prone etc. I don't expect him to all of a sudden average 100, but if he can do what he did last season it wouldn't make or break my year as a D6.
Riewoldt is interesting. A few people have mentioned him here in the last week or so. His stats at Etihad are pretty amazing and he plays 8 out the first 10 games there in 2017. A big positive for me is that he can score well in wins and loses. He scored 100+ 12 times last season, 7 times in wins and 5 times in loses. His age is a huge concern for me though.
Goldstein i am very much on the fence with. However, he is the most expensive ruck i am willing to go with this season. I will have extra cash if i change my mind and go with Nic Nat or Grundy.
Brodie and Ainsworth are just higher priced rookie placeholders until we know how rookies are traveling in the pre-season games and what rookies are named come round 1. Hopefully we get a couple basement rookies which will give me an extra 100-200k for an upgrade somewhere.
I like the 3 prem def structure, especially if Keefe & Hampton work out. Not a fan of Houli. Don't like beams? For similar prices you could get Beams + Hampton over Houli + Brodie which could score almost 20ppg more early on if Hampton/Brodie average the same.
Also, I don't think the R/F FD at F8 is the way to go with Witts at R3. There's no link! I'd much prefer someone like Deluca at M11. You can cash out Witts for Strnadica later on!
Thanks Bomber
Right now i think there is a lot of focus on injury prone players who are "on the cheap". Beams has been injured pretty much his whole AFL career, no doubt the bloke can play when fully fit but how many games are people expecting to get from him? His season game counts are more disturbing than pretty much any other player going around right now. 16, 21, 14, 21, 7, 19, 16 and 2. At 430k he's not going to make 150k cash any time soon. I'm also doubtful he will replicate his 2012/14 seasons of 115ppg+ and play 18+ games. If he manages to replicate his 2015 season of 16 games @ 113ppg, i don't think that will be a win in the long run.
To be honest i'm not sure Swallow will even be in my team come round 1. He hasn't played since round 15 in 2015, that's a long time between games and his interview on the Gold Coast website has made me somewhat nervous.
Keefe is 26, played 40 games and hasn't played at AFL level since round 23 in 2014. The one positive thing is that he didn't miss because he was injured. Hampton is almost 24, played 51 games and hasn't played since late 2015. Neither gives me confidence and i would rather sit with fresh rookies at the moment. Obviously if they smash pre-season and are clear obvious choices, then they'll be straight in my team.
At the moment i haven't thought about a link for R/F or if i will need/use one. A lot of that will depend on pre-season games and who gets named for round 1. I'm not sure if Witts will play round 1 or where he sits in the Gold Coast ruck pecking order with Nicholls and Currie. He's more of a placeholder which will allow me extra funds if i need to change him to a playing rookie/FD before round 1.
