Looks like another $102,400 rookie has earned a spot on a playing list for 2019 and will hopefully take up a forward role allowing more midfield time for I Heeney.

Righto kents. Been tracking the rookies throughout pre season. Feast your eyes on the group of rookies I’ve identified as just about certainties to play round 1. You’ve probably got a few in your squad already, however thought i’d touch on some of their attributes and scoring potential. Enjoy kents
DEF:
Connor Rozee (PTA $189,300) - Rozee is a silky midfielder ready made for AFL who’ll likely slot into Ports half forward line, but also has the ability to play down back (is accordingly dual positioned in SuperCoach). He’s lightning quick with great efficiency off the boot and with his hands. Made his SANFL debut last season and from all accounts handled the step up to seniors remarkably well averaging 13 possies and a goal. Recently killed it in an intraclub match playing at half forward furthering his claims for a round 1 debut. Does however have the ability to go missing in games. Not on my SuperCoach radar as he’s awkwardly priced for an unproven rookie defender/fwd, however as a fan am excited to see this kid develop over the next couple of years as he has the talent to be anything.
Sam Collins (GCS $188,900) - Looks to have sewn up a spot in Gold Coast’s backline as their third tall. Was easily the best defender running around in the VFL last year for Weribee. Collins bread and butter is his intercept marking. He’s very difficult to beat 1 on 1 and reads the game very well. Has been likened to a poor mans fat guts mcgovern (the premiership winner, not the 2019 wooden spoon winner) and his ability to take a pack mark or two during games is what really caught my eye. Not afraid of winning a hard ball either averaging 11 contested possessions. His major downfall is his kicking efficiency which is probably what’s kept him out of the AFL, however from all accounts has improved it since his last stint a few years ago at Freo. Reminds me a lot of Brodie Mihocek, who more than held his own in the AFL last season, albeit playing in the unfamiliar role of CHF.
Xavier Duursma (PTA $130,800) - Probably my pick of the bunch in terms of price, opportunity and potential. Is dual positioned and looks set to play significant midfield time from round 1 in Polec’s now vacated spot on the wing. Is efficient with his ball use and has pace to burn. Lined up opposite swimming and tits in a match sim last week, and from all accounts was very impressive with his run and carry. Not afraid to put his head over the ball and also clocked up 12 tackles in a TAC match last season, so you know he doesn’t shy away from the physical stuff. This kent is a ? in my side, and looks to me as a must have as your M5 or M6.
Ben McKay (NTH $123,900) - Cheap rookie defender options playing round 1 look to be few and far between. However it looks as if McKay has impressed enough this pre season and will be the beneficiary of some unfortunate injuries/suspension to others. Has been in Norths system for a few years now quietly biding his time, however it looks as if 2019 could be his breakout year. Is a handy intercept marker with a good engine finishing 6th in Norths 2km time trial this pre season. I personally think his efficiency off the boot is a lot to be desired for, and will probably see him in and out of this North side throughout the year. His huge frame is a bit of a negative as it limits his ability to match up on a lot of forwards who are generally more agile. Worth having in your squad as an emergency, but don’t expect him to score well, and play enough consistent football to generate a decent amount of cash.
MID:
Sam Walsh (CAR $207,300) - Not going to delve too much into Walsh as we’ve all been subjected to the media hyping this kid up all pre season. Seen a lot of blokes get suckered in by the pick 1 hype. Never ends well, and he’s not even the best SuperCoach midfield rookie option at his club. Will no doubt be quality in years to come though. Passsss.
Bailey Smith (WBD $180,300) - If you are looking at selecting one of the higher priced rookies, sexy young bailey is yours for the taking. He is an absolute star that is meticulous with his preparation. Can run all day, loves the contested stuff and has great disposal efficiency. Had an issue with his Achilles that saw him sit the last few months of footy last year out as well as the combine. Would have been number 1 pick ahead of Walsh if not for his injury. Every time I think of Bailey I get Hanson - MMMbop stuck in my head, and for that he is a must have.
Jackson Hately (GWS $148,800) - Played SANFL last year so came to the club just about a ready made player. Looks all but certain to debut round 1 after impressing over the pre season. Excels at stoppages getting contested footy and has a great engine. I haven’t been that impressed from what I have seen from him, and think there are far better options available to us for round 1.
Nick Hind (STK $117, 300) - Was a star in the VFL last year and was rewarded with being named in the team of the year. Has absolutely blistering speed and is likely to find himself somewhere on the wing or at half back in the saints round 1 side. Really like the look of him and think he can make a positive impact this year. Throw the key away kents, hindy is a ?
Brett Bewley (FRE $117,300) - After 5 seasons in the VFL, Bewley finally gets his opportunity. He is a ball magnet and will likely slot into the vacant spot in the midfield left by Lachie Neale. He should be in the side regardless, but put him into the ‘watch and see’ category during the JLT to see how he copes with the step up to AFL footy. Is just about a :lock:in my side and should make plenty of cashola to upgrade later in the season.
Michael Gibbons (CAR $102,400) - Gibbo has been thrust upon us by the SuperCoach gods, and it’d be an absolute insult to them if he wasn’t in your squad somewhere. A VFL best and fairest winning ball magnet, Gibbo looks set to line up on the half forward line for his AFL debut in round 1. Has absolutely banged the door down since given the opportunity to train at Carlton, which to be fair isn't that hard to do when the house you're entering is a ******* shambles.
RUC:
Darcy Fort (GEE $117,300) - Everyones favourite R3. Set and forget. Looks certain to have some sort of role come round 1. Based off his SANFL scoring (avg of 123) he could even be a contender for the R2 position for those with big gigantic testicles.
FWD:
Izak Rankine (GCS $198,300) - Seen a lot of people with Rankine in their teams and can’t for the life of me understand why. He is no doubt a talent that’ll be exciting to watch, however can’t see him putting up the scores to justify forking out close to 200K on a rookie forward. Gold Coast’s inability to go forward with the ball, and keep it trapped inside their 50 until they score leads me to believe that while we may see glimpses of Rankine’s exciting talent this season, it’ll be fleeting at best. Avoid like the plague.
Nick Blakey (SYD $166,800) - Had an injury plagued 2018 so its hard to get a read on his prospects. Despite this looks as if he’s got his body right and is line to debut round 1, with Buddy and Menzel’s injury woes significantly increasing his chances. Will play as the Swans 3rd tall, but is also capable of moving into the midfield though it is unlikely we’ll see him there this season. Participated in the Swans last match sim and had Grundy defending him, from all reports he was sound without doing anything spectacular. Not on the radar in terms of my own team however will monitor anyway during JLT just in case.
Will Setterfield (CAR $144,900) - A good talent, albeit still unproven at AFL level. Should be a lock in Carltons best 22 as long as he remains fit. Just about in every tom, **** and harry’s side with 57% ownership as we speak. Question mark remains on whether his body can withstand the rigours of getting pounded week in, week out by big muscly hunks of men
Joshua Corbett (GCS $123,900) - Will slot in as one of Gold Coast’s talls. Has strong contested marking skills that saw him excel at VFL last year until his season was cut short with an eye injury. Kicked 22 goals from his 9 appearances. Is on my radar and will be monitoring his performances throughout JLT.
Ben Cavarra (WBD $117,300) - Ben is a small high pressure forward with a knack for kicking goals. Killed it in the VFL the last two years as a forward booting 66 goals. His high pressure and tackling will really suit the Bulldog’s game style. At his price and role (has potential to play midfield although unlikely unless injuries to others), he is just about a ? in terms of F5/6.
Mathew Parker (STK $117,300) - Really impressive story if he indeed debuts (which looks very likely) given he was playing amateur footy 2 years ago. Kicked 27 goals from 20 games and averaged 13 disposals in the WAFL last season. Is currently warming the pine in my SuperCoach squad. Not expecting him to do anything of note in terms of the way he scores, however his affordability is enticing.

Hore played well and is in the frame for round 1 especially with Lever unavailable.
C Wagner played well in the midfield and kicked a goal but there was no Oliver, Viney or Jones so will be tough to crack into the round 1 team.
Sparrow just played the second half and didn't get a lot of it in a tagging role. Did kick a goal though. Doubtful he plays round 1.
For the Pies, I think Quaynor just played the second half and had a nice kick at one stage and also laid a crunching tackle at one stage but didn’t have much of an impact aside from that. Lynch played in the ruck at times wit no Grundy. Didn't hear much about the other rookie priced players.

Jack Petruccelle has been a standout in the second half. Four goals and very lively. Reckon he’s leading the race for Mark Lecras’ spot @WestCoastEagles

There have been some good wraps on a few more forward rookies so far in intra clubs, training reports and scratch matches. Particularly forward rookies who will play more midfield like Setterfield and Drew. I think if those two get up, a two forward rookie on field line up looks very viable. Parker, Petruccelle and Cavarra are also presenting as possible small forward options, could we get away with a three forward rookie on field line up this year? I can't recall a year where three fwd rookies on field has been successful, but with a few more midfielders available as fwd rookies, could it be viable?
I'm even considering Corbett as a "Donut to Play" if one of Petruccelle or Cavarra don't get up. GC have a very good loophole draw early on and Corbett should play early on after a few games in the NEAFL (it appears he'll be ready for Round one in the NEAFL, might get his AFL debut around R3-6). Would allow you to loop Petruccelle/Cavarra and Parker for that third fwd rookie spot.
A lot to play out still though - will really require Setterfield and Drew to be rock solid as on field starters.
