i laugh at people who immediately put a line through a proven AFL / SC relevant player after one JLT. Most experienced players are doing what they need to do to prepare for the season
You don’t think JLT form has any carry over to the season proper? I generally try to look at roles and fitness only through the pre season games as like you said many players are just going through the motions.

In the case of Zerrett for me, his lack of continuity seems to have affected his fitness and, with so many other good picks around that price point, the risk vs reward scale looks to be leaning a bit to the risk side. Been in my side majority of the pre season so I’m loathe to leave him out but he’d need a strong showing in his next game to make it back into the side.

What I got for that game -

No to Zerrett
Lock in Walsh, Setters and Cripps
Newman - into consideration, his TOG was up 14% on last year and looks to be playing the Doch role. Im not sure whether to be concerned if Williamson takes his spot, anyone think he'll stay best 22?
McGrath - Wasnt ever going to pick him but not the worst selection.
Interesting with Newman, I never knew that his time on ground was so low, especially for a defender. I’m not sure that 12% increase will carry into the year because it’s 1 game and it’s JLT. If you assume at least some of that is fitness his time on ground will only go up by about 5 mins, meaning he might have averaged about 87 and 76 in 17 and 18 with the minutes he’ll get this year, as opposed to his 82 and 72 he did get. I feel like he saw so much of the ball at his end at Sydney already and they played a SC friendly game style for defenders that the fact he’s at Carlton won’t matter that much. They don’t have the same number of half backs as Sydney but do have Simpson and Thomas, so he won’t be able to be the only guy to get out of defence. Also played a bit of time on the wing the year he had the 82 average and he looks set to be mostly in defence at Carlton. I think it’s just a risk at his price, his JS should be fine but I think he’ll only average low 80’s

Interestingly he was 9th for ppm amongst current defenders in 2017 and 27th in 2018.

Tuohy was OK but not a game changing pick. I wonder if Newman was given more of Simpson’s usual role, cos Simpson had a down game. I didn’t watch the game though and am just relying on the observation on AFLratings
Simpson looked to be taking it easy and Newman was playing his role. Don’t think that will carry over into the season

Not sure I agree with that, if a player looks a bit slow after an interrupted preseason....it’s just a risk not worth taking

Obviously if they come out in the 2nd one and dominate it can change your mind but Merrett didn’t look 100% and will be a lot better by round 1, but might not be at his best and might start the year averaging 100 the first 5 weeks. It’s a game of inches and everyone acts like someone being hesitant of starting a player with an interrupted preseason means they’re saying they’ll be terrible or will get injured straight away when what we’re actually saying is they’ll start a bit slower and will average 5-10 less than other options at the same price. Full fitness means optimal performance.

Who had their first uninterrupted preseason last year? Cripps. Whose preseasons were interrupted? Billings, Wingard, Kelly, Greene, Hurley, Neale

Simpson actually played further up the ground after half time and on at least one occasion I saw him playing inside the F50. It's mainly the last JLT game I think we really need to look at roles.

I didn't see the game but Newman and McGrath's stats don't seem to reflect the hype?

With Bewley, sometimes a club uses the first preseason game to see who gets a second go and so it's possible they have already decided Bewley plays round 1.

Yeah they do all sort of things, letting him play somewhere else so he can get practice in, whilst letting new faces play in his position to see how they go. You're right I only think teams really take the second game seriously in terms of how they use established players.

Good point Freo, but I think what actually happened is the AFL made a mistake and prematurely picked 4 random bench players and listed them as emergencies before the final teams came out. Freako deleted his tweet and Freo's website says the final team isn't named til Saturday. That makes a lot more sense because he was getting so much internal praise.

It's a pity Gaff is going to miss the first couple of weeks as I feel he's in for a massive year. These new starting position rules will favour a winger like him.
