Odd decision to keep Leach going from the other end in the circumstances. Last the thing the Aussie bats would want at the moment is pace from both ends.

Yeah, you’d think they’d give an over to one of the seamers who will take the new ball so they can be right on the money as soon as they take it.

Interesting to see how England approach this situation. Their best chance I think Is if they get bowled out with a lead of 160 to 200 with a couple of sessions to play. However I doubt they would willingly set that up by declaring.

Anyway it may be a moot point given they have just lost 2 in 2 balls.

Sri Lanka win the 1st Test and gain 60 pts in the ICC World Test Championship.

Sri Lanka 60
Australia 24
England 0
New Zealand 0

The big 4 insistence on 4-5 Test series (for revenue) may come back to bite them.

Smith has formally been withdrawn from the remainder of the Test and replaced by Labuschagne.

I think Labuschagne is now allowed to bowl and bat.

Nightmare for statisticians.

Smith in doubt for the 3rd Test.
Quite concerning regarding Smith, it seems pretty clear that the doctor made the wrong call (or maybe the protocol is incorrect/flawed?).

I think it’s a big positive that the concussion sub has been introduced. Makes the decision for a player to sit out, or be sat out, much easier.

Interesting, I was just thinking the same thing! I think they make it back in volume, so it doesn’t hurt on average but it will quite likely cost someone a title match at some point.

I was pleased to see (1) that draws are disincentivised (only 1/3 of the points of a win), and (2) there are direct penalties for slow over rates.

Was fine yesterday apparently , woke up this morning with headaches and dizziness so they tested him again and he failed the test.

I gather he passed the test yesterday, although it sounds like his behavior was erratic from what I read (he reviewed and then immediately walked?). Hard to know without being there up close, but the tone from what I’ve read suggested that he shouldn’t have been back on the field.

I like that the ICC has introduced it to make every test interesting and meaningful BUT every team should be playing each other home and away and each series should be 3 tests per series.

As it is at the moment each country only has 6 series (of various lengths) 3 at home , 3 away.

I emailed the ICC years ago with a schedule , each country has 8 Home series & 8 Away series over a 4 year period.

Yes still have the Ashes and other longer series but the 4th & 5th Test don't count towards the table.

Watching his dismissal on TV , did look like he was in Disbeyland.

Scariest hit on the head I have seen in years.

On what basis do you make the serious allegation that the doctor made an error in diagnosis of Smith's injury in this case?

There are scientific analysis and baselines for all professionals in major sports nowadays.

Delayed concussion is certainly a prevalent occurrence in AFL, NRL and NFL.

Major sports have come a long way in recent years. Medical staff sit players until they are ready to return. Coaches only consider them once they are cleared.

Fyfe knocked out cold and played the next week. McCartin in the preseason had a small knock to the head and hasn't played since.

I made the comment that either the decision was wrong or the protocol is flawed. Based on what I have read, and that he has now been substituted out of the game, I'm comfortable with that assessment.

Top order needs a reshuffle. Marnus making a very good case for a spot. I'd drop Bancroft, Khawaja to open and Marnus slides in at 3. Or they may being in Harris for Bancroft. If Smithy doesn't get up, they will probably keep Bancroft and get Marnus in at 4. Bancroft just looks uncomfortable out there, his technique looks questionable in these conditions. Sidds also makes way for me, for Patto/ Starc.
Warner low on confidence but he's got runs on the board and won't take much for him to get going.
England have figured out a good game plan to him. Reminds me a little bit of what they did to the Gilly in 2005 by coming around the wicket, angling the ball in full and getting the odd one to hold its line or move away.
Exciting match at Lords. Might have been a different result either way if we had reviewed Stokes a couple of times on day 4/taken catches or if England had held Head on 22 last night.

Reliance on Smith right now is disappointing, to say the least. Archer a weapon for England.

Warner just needs a bit of luck and a flat pitch to get him going. We’ve definitely got that coming into the next couple of tests.

Bancroft has looked average but I don’t think throwing another left hander in is ideal given how well England have been bowling to them. It’s a shame we don’t have Joe Burns in this squad, because he would be straight in if I were selecting the team.
