I haven’t owned him as much as some others so I’m no expert, but my impression was that he was more of a downhill skier. I generally think of the opposite type of player as most likely to benefit from the captaincy - the big game player for whom every game becomes a big one.
He did share the C duties during the year and performed well. The incentive of security, $$ & hopefully less injuries should see him become more consistent imo. I'd be willing to give him a go again. ?

Fair enough. It’s also possible that the responsibility of captaincy helps him lift in his weaker games, perhaps turning 60s into 80s. It might depend on what the driver of those really low scores was (tag, effort, role etc).

Interestingly this would suggest that Ward won’t be C ... not sure what to make of that? He’s at least as SC relevant next year as I see it, was looking like a lock ?

Found this on twitter. Pretty much confirms Whitfield as a fwd-mid and also tells us a fair bit of how they calculate player position - mostly off centre bounce starting positions.

Thanks I always wondered about this myself... given that once the ball is in play, even KPF are expected to defend back to the 50m at times so it's hard to judge what they're real position... so starting positions at Centre Bounces is the decider!

I think that’s pretty much how they do it and add on a little bit of info about clear role changes post centre bounce. This seems like it’s a player changing positions clearly at a stoppage or even during open play during a period where no goals are being scored. I think both of those two factors take a clear back seat to starting position

Fantasy article, but SC share the positions.

Whitfield, Dusty, Ziebell, Steven, Dev Smith all gaining M/F, Gaz F only.

Danger, Dunkley, Boak, Marshall all gone as expected.
Thanks. Glad to see J Steven and D Smith receive DPP as well as Danger, Dunkley, Boak and Marshall losing theirs which makes my potential ploy to start 3 to 4 of J Steven, D Smith, S Menegola, C Wingard and L Franklin more enticing.

I think him being a downhill skier is more a product of the type of player he is and who can put him off his game. He’s basically all out attack as a player and kicks all the time when he shouldn’t kick (in heavily contested situations) and that either means he will have a huge number of score involvements, effective kicks and goals or have a whole bunch of Clangers depending on the week and opponent. Put him under heavy pressure and man up and he probably won’t have a good game.

Looking at this data I think his performance might be dependent on the opposition midfield and how much pressure they put him under, but I'm not sure. I have always thought of him as something of a downhill skier but not a prototype one. All I know is he is all out attack and it either works and he goes 130+ or it backfires and he scores about 80 odd.

I'd take an 80 for a bad game with the 130's. I have a short memory, so will give him another go and hope some of the lesser lites step up and support him, ie Taranto and Hopper.

Will be interesting regarding the GWS midfield rotations with the return of C Ward and continual improvement/emergence of T Taranto as I wouldn’t be surprised to see Coniglio spending long stings up forward. As for his relevancy it’ll likely be an upgrade target for M6-M9 as he doesn’t possess large value or consistency and assume his teammates such as J Kelly and C Ward will be preferred starting options.
