Thanks Johno for creating this new General Discussion thread as I forgot to re-open the old one.

When the Essendon news is released shortly, please be mature about it and don't go over the top as there are legal ramifications. I don't mind people expressing their views such as 'too lenient' or 'too tough' or 'the decision was flawed', but let's be diplomatic about our comments and not go over the top! Thanks!

Just remember to R-E-S-P-E-C-T each other.

Voss gone. Well, I can't say I didn't expect it, rant about it, or dislike it as a move by the Lions. The fact that he doesn't like 'Hanley running with the ball' kinda shows he isn't, should I say, wasn't a very good coach.

Long live the Lion King, the Lion King is dead!

Sneaky edit - it would appear Hird is in trouble. Seems this is a bad day for the 1996 Brownlow winners!

Couple of tweet re: the Dons tonight.

- The AFL has charged Essendon FC, James Hird, Bruce Reid, Danny Corcoran and Mark Thompson in relation to 2011/12 supplements program.
- All are charged with engaging in conduct unbecoming or likely to prejudice interests or reputation of AFL or to bring game into disrepute.
- Hearing scheduled to be held on Monday 26 August at AFL House.

Hmmmm...... my brother raised a good point. If Essendon did nothing wrong, then how do the 3 Essendon men get charged?

All that Essendon said was that "we may have taken a banned drug"

What's interesting for me is what they've been charged of - "engaging in conduct unbecoming or likely to prejudice interests or reputation of AFL or to bring game into disrepute" or more so how it's been worded.

I'd be interested to see who else has been charged with this in the past and what they actually did.

Was on the phone when I posted this, and didn't finish my Post..............

Essendon never said anything after that comment. The rest was left by the media with all those articles. It would be logical to charge the media, but then to be more logical, you can't go and charge the media as a whole.

My point, is that no charges should be laid.

Happened more than once or twice. Sheedy I think got that for cut throat gesture for one. Malthouse too I think for how he behaved one day v St.Kilda

Just on his not liking Hanley running with the ball comment. I have heard more than one good Coach Express similar thoughts, about similar players. I heard Roos say it about one of his half-backs once. A journalist scoffed at him, and Roos explained that the players up the field were finding themselves out of position when he ran like he did. The ball was getting turned over as he took over half the available options out by running. The players reading the play 90-100 metres ahead were looking for a run and kick, not 3 bounces and a kick. He added, running and bouncing can be a good thing, but you have to know when it is your best option. I think Hanley is doing it, and running into dead ends and losing options up the field. He doesn't have enough experience yet to know when he should, and shouldn't do it. Which is exactly what Roos said of his player, until he learnt when to do it, it's best if he errs on the side of caution, and only do it when he's sure he will have options when he's using the ball.
On a side note, 3 times this year I've seen Hanley mess bounces up, and nearly lose the ball when he wasn't under pressure. That might have been a side thought in Voss' thinking.
I think we need to look at all sides of things, before being overly critical of better qualified people than ourselves. Or at the least, try and understand their meaning and point of view.

The AFL said that Melbourne didn't tank, yet it fined them half a million for "bringing the game into disrepute" and suspended both Connolly and Bailey.

So I guess they can say that although they may not have definitive proof that certain Essendon players took certain drugs, the cir***stantial evidence surrounding the case has damaged the reputation of the AFL.

Like with Ratten long way from convinced sweeping statements about their coaching in on the mark, Tough day for 96 Brownlow Medallists. Feel for Vossy but coaching is a tough gig to keep your job if you 4 or 5 years into it and no major success.

Certainly has done damage. They will have to pay some consequences as a result. August 26 will get us closer what is the consequence.

Sure Rowsus, point taken - my point about Hanley was in reference to an earlier post from someone about Hanley and Voss, and was half spoken in jest. The rest wasn't in jest though - Voss isn't a very good coach imo. He has a 40% win record, and it is not for a a lack of time in the job - he has been there since 2008. The Lions stuffed up when they hired him on no assistant coaching experience - I think you need to do an 'apprenticeship' before you are ready for a senior coaching role.

He went for the win early by trading in players that were on their way out (Fev for eg) and it didn't come off. History will say this was the wrong move, and that makes him a bad coach. If Roos gets the gig, I will almost guarantee the Lions will be a harder team to beat in 2014, they certainly have the players and the talent to work with.
