Surely Cripps cops tags after what de Boer, Clark and to a lesser extent Steele did to him. 12, 11, 22 touches for 66, 89, 85 SC isn't ideal.

Ben Jacobs was a very effective tagger so watch out for him too if he's fit and ready to go.

Is it just my imagination or do we tend to see heavy tags more prevalent after the year has gotten going a bit and the 'standout' players have revealed themselves? Not that you'd have to be all that astute to work out that Neale and Cripps were the top mids in their side, but they weren't tagged until they'd dominated for 6-8 weeks.

It's almost like coaches want to dream that at the start of the year they are on equal footing with the rest of the competition but by the time they are 2 and 6 and facing Brisbane in the top 4 they are resigned to "better just tag Neale"?

Be interesting to see what people think on which midfielders will be targeted with a tag in 2020.
I would of thought L Neale , L Whitfield and Oliver are mist likely to see the tag after last season.
Cripps.

Don't think Neale's going to be targeted too heavily, not while Zorko is still playing and it's been shown that he can have 50 touches and stuff all impact on the game.

All depends on who the opposition is, some teams style of play do not use a tagger.

Could the results be due to Richmond plays well against Brisbane?

Average 32-33 disposals and 6+ tackles a game. Extremely unlikely that he will ever get to the 120+ range for a season but could potentially push a 115+ but his game style isn't as conducive in comparison to the other elite scorers.

Hello all! Been reading much of your work this off-season. Liking the site!

Wanted to get people's thoughts on Jack Bowes? As a GC fan I've been liking the looks of him and Fiorini and wanted to start one of them in my mids this year. After hearing about Fiorini's surgeries this off-season, I'm starting to think about picking Bowes.

He looked really good in a few games last year, and he looks like he's bulked up and ready to become a star at 21 years of age. Am I crazy to pick him at M5?

What are people thoughts on Lin Jong as a 260K midfielder, I remember his dashing runs off the halfback lines in prior years.

Bowes looks as likely a type as any at the Suns to put some SC relevant scores together at some stage, but here's the kicker for me: in 2019 their BEST midfielders (Swallow and Fiorini) averaged just 88.

That is symptomatic of a team getting killed every week. By contrast, every other club had a midfielder average over 100 except for Hawthorn, clearly hurting from no Tom Mitchell.

I daresay Bowes will improve on his 75 average this year, but unless he has become a monster and the rest of the Suns mids improve out of sight to provide some support, I can't see him averaging above 85 really.

NB: I think a similar type logic applies to Rowell, which is why he's nowhere near my team and yet (to me) surprisingly popular.

I reckon most people are thinking that Rowell might have a similar output to Walsh who was also coming into a ****e team

Here's how I read it, and I'm happy to consider my opinion an outlier:

Walsh came into a pretty bad side for sure, but they were nowhere near as bad as the Suns (imo). He also had a massive, contested ball winning bull in Cripps feeding him possession all day and other more experienced bodies around him (Murphy, Curnow). I think that made a bigger difference than people realise.

Here's the killer stat to back it up...
P Cripps ave when Walsh scored a ton (6 matches): 136.8

For Rowell to go past 100 at the Suns he'd just about have to be BOG.

Completely agree... there was some analysis done previous years but top average for a rookie is usually no higher than 75... Walsh was a real outlier...

That said, in the first half of the season your onfield rookie scores can also be make or break... last year GC were competitive for the first 6 or so rounds which is when Bowes and some others probably had their best scoring output... Repeat that again this year and Rowell could be an astute pick..

*Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance and should never be the sole factor considered when selecting a high drafted rookie.

Walsh was also top 2 or 3 for distance covered per game in the whole comp. Runs all day and picks up possessions all round the ground like Whitfield does. Might have fatigued later in the season but was on fire the first half of the year.
