Back again after reading here and elsewhere.

Appears you need 14 non-rookies to start with no more than 2 midpricers so here goes

LAIRD , SICILY , Docherty , Hill * , Young , Starcevich */ Williamson , Brander *

MACRAE , NEALE , FYFE , CRIPPS , OLIVER , Bytel , McHenry , Pickett / Simpson , Smith *, Budarick *

GRUNDY , GAWN / Comben *

MARTIN * , HEENEY * , Steven * , Smith * , Cockatoo * , Rankine / King , Cameron *

* 2 Anchors in Laird & Sicily , fallen premium in Docherty , will monitor Hill

Like the 5 prices of the rookies as a starting point , suspect their will be viable </= $ 123,900.00 rookies named Round 1

* 5 Premiums to start , took Rowell out so hopefully we have 6 starting mid rookies

* Self explanatory

* 2 Anchors in Martin & Heeney , IF Steven & Smith are 100% Round 1 think they are no brainers , will monitor Cockatoo

2-1-5
5-0-6
2-0-1
2-2-4

$ 4,100.00 in the Bank

Round 13 could be a issue with 8 premiums on the bye

Hopefully it is something competitive & reasonable to start , depending on the rookies

Cheers
That’s as good as any side I’ve seen this time of year mate, will end up being a very popular structure I’d wager. As you said, 8 round 13 bye premos might be one too many though.

Very un-Herbie like side mate, I’d be lying if I said I wasnt a little disappointed ;)

Thanks BigRuss , appreciate the feedback.

I can't find any player (or 3-4) to pick that is going to derail my season by week 3 , so I am not sure what is wrong with me at the moment ?

Couldn't even fit in the Scottish suitcase.

Sit and wait now to see if the rookies make it viable.

Was just having another look

Docherty
Cripps , Oliver
Grundy , Gawn
Martin , Heeney

I all want to start.
So the only option I can see is maybe Fyfe to Dangerfield or Mitchell (if he looks 100%) or Whitfield (as a Mid)

Plenty of time to decide.

I for one like it.

You sacrifice a couple of super premium Captain options like Macrae, Neale, Fyfel & Danger but it allows you to avoid the midprice structure, expecially in the backs of Dawson and Houston.
Potential for 14 keepers is a good starting squad and if the Houston/Dawson picks turn out to be spuds you're probably up.

Interesting that by "possibly" sacrificing in the mids you can get Whitfield , Roberton & keep Rowell.

By starting Sloane & Cogs though , that only leaves you 3 remaining spots to fill though out of Macrae , Neale , Fyfe , Kelly , Dunkley , Mitchell , Dangerfield , Treloar etc etc (assuming of course they all back up last season's averages)

Looks stronger though in the Forwards & Defence

Not sure which thread to put this in but given Hill appears in so many teams thought here is as good as any. This is Alex Pearce on the Freo website talking about possible X factor players in 2020.

Pearce believes Stephen Hill will be an asset on the wing in 2020 after being limited to 16 games in the past two seasons.

“I think he’ll be huge with a couple of the guys that have left last year with Bradley (Hill) and Ed (Langdon),” Pearce said.

“Having Stephen come in with his ball use and the way he can run and take players on and then kick it 60 metres, he does it all.

“He’s a really good defensive player as well, which a lot of people wouldn’t recognise watching TV.

“I think he’ll be like another recruit for us this year and he’s tracking really well and has been back in training for the past couple of weeks.”

And this on rookie Hayden Young. This is the second pump for Young I have heard of in the past week.

And while Pearce is yet to re-join full training due to his ankle injury, he’s been wowed by the efforts of new recruit Hayden Young on the track.

Touted as one of the best kicks in the 2019 NAB AFL National Draft, Young was snapped up by Fremantle at pick no.8 and Pearce thinks Freo fans won’t have to wait long to see the exciting defender in action.

“I’m hearing a lot of good things…I’m hearing that Hayden Young is a really talented kid and you can tell that he’s really keen to not wait (for selection) and really try and push his way in and play senior footy as soon as he can,” Pearce said on TAB radio Sports Daily.

“He’s really talented and a really great kid.”

I don't see that. There's at least three midpricers in that side in Roberton, Steven and Smith, as well as two midfielders that might be a rung below the elite.

Following on from your comments, I made the following adjustments:
Defence: Young to Gould
Midfield: Rowell to Oliver
Forwards: Wingard to King

While I see merit in starting 4/5 premium midfielders, I have the following concerns with these:
  • Nat Fyfe - injured preseason and what role will he play?
  • Josh Kelly - I considered, but is injury prone and at that price I want 22 games
  • Cripps - will he be hard tagged and what impact will the mature age recruits have on his midfield time?
  • Dunkley - will he play forward as inferred in a recent interview (see midfielder thread).
  • Mitchell - uncertain when he will play/likely to be managed
  • Dangerfield - likely to play sometime in the forwards/what role considering his age.
  • Bontempelli - I had him last year and I am avoiding him like the plague.
By selecting 3 cheaper priced midfielders who I anticipate will improve their average, I am minimising my risk on the midfield and able to improve the other lines.

Dion Prestia started 2019 slowly and another full preseason should further improve his fitness base.

Considering 2019 was the first time he played 22 games since 2014 would indicate a better fitness management by the sports science team at Richmond.

He scored 100+,13 times during 2019 and from R16 only had 2 scores less than 100.

Prestia turns 28 in October 2020, so he should be in the prime years for a midfielder.

I am predicting an increase in his average due to decreasing the differential between his worst and best scores.

I expect him to get off to a flyer due to the amount of games at the MCG.

You mention the risk with Coniglio, however, Docherty has not played in 2 years and is a greater risk imho and which I am not willing to take.

Thank you for your comments, they are appreciated.

Some good discussion here, I like the differentiated thinking on Prestia!

Interested to hear how Whitfield fits s underpriced?
It was recently pointed out to me (maybe by @randomcliche?) that he had two injury affected scores last year when he copped early knocks. Not low TOG games necessarily, but his scores were down, and from memory he missed the subsequent game in both cases.

I don’t plan to start him myself, but it does strengthen the argument for him.

There are midpricers and there are underpriced. Roberton, Stevens and Smith are all undervalued should they be fit both physically and mentally. The difference being that these guys ahve shown previously that they can sustain some form of scoring much higher then their individual prices show this year.

If all three of these guys show strong preseason form and roles reflective of good SC scoring then at least two of them will be in 90% of teams.

@jaca

Take a closer look. There are some seriously good scores there with a couple of injury games bringing down his avg. He starts for me. There are strong arguments for him, dusty, heeney, TJL, Steven and Smith. ATM I'm starting 5/6, missing the last one.

Toothless Tigers nailed it!

MEDICAL ROOM
Sydney:
Callum Sinclair came from the field in the first half with a cut to the head but was able to resume his battle with Shane Mumford after getting it taped up.
GWS: Lachie Whitfield copped a corked thigh in the second term and while he played out the game with it heavily strapped, the star Giant battled to run and spent long periods playing as a deep forward. Sam Reid looked to have suffered an ankle injury late in the game.

MEDICAL ROOM
Giants:
Lachie Whitfield copped a couple of heavy knocks and eventually headed to the rooms in the final term to get his right collarbone checked. He'll be one to watch next week.
Suns: Jack Bowes pinged his right quad when he had a shot for goal midway through the opening term and played no further part in the match.

Or red flags.
Leon Cameron has talked about how brave he is and how well he soldiers on given his light build.

Hoping to put an end to my horrendous slide over the past few years and I feel I need the help of SCS highly regarded coaches. Will this be a good enough platform to build my assault for season 2020...?

Potential Keepers Split = 4-6-4

Great looking side but I think you need to find a way to get Rowell into the mids. I believe he is this years Walsh. I’d start by culling Cockatoo Collins to a cheaper rookie.

I've cooled on Jack Steven personally and have got Lynch instead with a plum early draw but it's just as likely to go pear shaped really
