Still got him on my watchlist ... going to be a tough ask to string 6 consecutive games together though me thinks ...
Yeah in a premiership contending team it is going to be hard to nail down a regular spot for sure. A plus is he's added over 6kgs of muscle to his frame this off-season, the next few weeks of games will give us a good idea of how he's tracking and where WC intend to play him.

I wouldn’t worry about rookies at this stage as yet. There’ll most likely be a few injuries to best 22 players during the preseason games. Or the rookies show better form than the fringe players to get up for R1. The rookies will present...!

They always do and they will again... my concern this year is more about their job security.

I don't think the rookies always present. Some years they are sparse. Although with 4 new head coaches and Gold Coast still trying to get off the bottom, this year should be a good one for rookies. :cautious:
I agree that the rookie depth changes year to year but there are usually enough options to avoid starting permanent donuts on a line. I think I’ve usually missed a good rookie most years, that wouldn’t be happening without enough options!

SYDNEY is confident forgotten first-round draft pick Matt Ling will put a wretched two years with injury behind him to add to the club's developing list in season 2020.

Ling is yet to feature for the Swans since he was recruited to the club with pick No.14 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft, having battled significant toe and Achilles injuries.

………...Ling, who demonstrated the excitement he could bring with his speed and outside run both in defence and on a wing for the Geelong Falcons and Vic Country in his final under-18 season.

……...having returned to full duties this pre-season, the Swans are hopeful Ling will work his way into the side's plans for the senior team during the upcoming campaign.

"He's been training, which is good," Sydney coach John Longmire told AFL.com.au.
"His development has been hindered because he hasn't been able to train, let alone play.

……….he keeps fronting up all the time and hopefully he'll get some reward for that now.

"He's back into training and he's enjoying that. He's competitive and he's a runner. We looked at that a couple of years ago, which is why we recruited him … to help us with that two-way running.

"He can play half-back or wing and he can really give us some run. He competes hard."

"Gould already looked like Humphrey Bear , another 10-15 kgs have fun in the NEAFL. "

Maybe I'm a bit defensive, but's easy to be dismissive @Herbie66 - Gould's current body shape and weight is quite different from the image you conjure up. I seem to recall a rookie West Coast defender arriving at his first pre-season after a Bali pigout. He apparently was not even able to beat the coaches over 2K. Jez turned out OK when he realised what was required.
Is he best 22 ?

My memory of the Swans defence is hazy but suspect :-

Aliir , Rampe , Lloyd
Dawson , McCartin (?) , Mills

with O'Riordan , does Rowbottom play defence ?

Where does Gould fit in line compared to the likes of Ling & Stoddart etc ?

I guess the annual talk of Mills moving in the midfield might come to fruition one season and open up a spot.

Thought Brand was stiff to get cut from the hawks and I'd expect him to slot straight in to the back 6. Allir, Rampe, Lloyd, Dawson and Mills makes 6.

forgot all about him and Melican.

Not sure Franklin , McCartin , Reid , Sinclair all can work in their F50 though.

How many picked Miers last year? One of the year’s best rookies but had next to no pre season discussion but turned up in the R1 team.
Don’t sweat unnecessarily this early on the rookies. I reckon Just put the team to one side until the pre season games are done. I feel you just do your head in otherwise for no point.

Just about no one I think, a lot due to Geelong having a Sunday game and him being on the extended bench (I think). People had commited spots to Setterfield and Balta from game 1 instead!

Similar story for Wilkie in the back line. Somehow I had him in and he was solid.

Add Josh Honey mid/fwd to your watch lists.

Honey has plenty of burst speed so really exciting prospect and is tearing it up this preseason.
It was brewing in my mind to include Josh Honey with Jackson Mead and Ollie Wines in my team.
I could be easily tempted to have this tasty selection of Honey Mead Wines ;)
