@pizza safety good pickup, seems Young has some sort of injury which Freo are keeping quiet on. Missed training with the main group as well and did weights instead

FREMANTLE draftee Hayden Young appears to have hit an obstacle in his push for an early debut, joining the Dockers' rehab group on Monday.

Young, who was on track for early opportunities after a strong first pre-season, missed Fremantle's intraclub hitout on Friday and did not train with the Dockers' main group on Monday.

The No.7 pick in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft completed running work with trainers at the Dockers' Cockburn base, dragging weights and moving well.

The reason for his withdrawal from the main training group is not clear, with football manager Peter Bell hopeful on Friday that he would still receive early opportunities.

"If not in the Marsh [Community] Series, I know that with what he's done so far he's put himself in a position where potentially there will be an opportunity early," Bell said after the Dockers' intraclub.

Haha I actually left our conversation thinking that I may have read too much into Bell's comments and restructured my team with Young back in it. I think it's safe to plan without him in mind for now on and that planning is made difficult by the absence of defensive rookies in general.

The annoying thing is he looks like a solid rookie who would average about 70-75 if he was playing the start of the season but he becomes a near impossible downgrade target given his elevated price when the season begins, unless we get an early injury to a mid priced defender.

he's on my bench already, looks the goods and has a good size body.
I don't think we'll be seeing him anytime soon, I'd be pretty surprised based on what I'm seeing at face value. He's pick #61, he's listed at 64kg and only played in the SANFL U/18's, which is two tiers away from the SANFL and there he averaged 93. Out of 10 draftees from SA only Frederick and one other played predominantly in the SANFL U/18's, everybody else either played SANFL or SANFL reserves.

Edit: he must have grown, he looks bigger in photos and checking Freo's website he's listed at 183cm and 71kg, as opposed to 179cm and 64kg in the prospectus.

HOPEFULLY Ash,Hill and Brander will be our saviours otherwise we are f*****
I'm worried about Ash's very low contested possession rate at the u/18 carnivals (only 20% but 35% in the NAB League). He won't be allowed as much space if he gets an early gig in the AFL to dominate on the outside with his speed like he did in juniors.

Young seemed to have a more diverse skill set and seemed the better pick with better job security and him missing the start of the year is disappointing.

I can still see Ash being a decent cash cow, it's just a lot to pay for somebody who might only average 65-70.

Well, and just like that Rowell has to sit at M5.

I know, i know the rookies will come but I can't stand the sight of some of them sitting on my ground even at F6/D6 atm. We are going to need 3-4 to really come from the clouds (to make round 1 let alone play 10 games) in order to keep 5 mids and Gawn.
Much easier to spend money than find where you need to get it from
Agree both fronts. at one stage I had 6 mids, now down to 4.

Will the rookies come, yes they will. will we want them, no we may not.

Every year I get caught with a def or fwd who sits there all year, had 3 last year including Bailey Scott.

Freo's Young came out of my side last weekend. similar to yourself, Bell's comments unnerved me and would rather trade down in the heat of the moment if he plays round 1.

Have Bonar F6, Brander D6 who now look likely.

Don't like some of my mid rooks and a little nervous having 6mids/rucks $600-700k, 2 def/fwds in $500-600k, 5 x $400-500k and Devon Smith.

Last year I had 13 high quality premiums with only Hurn traded out, just not replicable I expect this year.

ha ha I am doing the opposite, trying to beef up mids to ensure no fwd rookies in mids. aim is to reduce forward rookies as they typically are the worst scorers.
Yeah, but who is there to pick? I'm struggling to find even 3 players for the bench that I'm confident in. Really need a few mid rooks to bob up in the next few Marsh games.

Forward rookies may score worse but sometimes you just have to go where the players are, and I think we'll see far more debuting forward only rookies than midfielders in R1 (at this stage anyway).

agree with that. expect some cheap fwd rookies will push a dpp to the mids. trying to o***et it with the more expensive rookies and the Bonars of this world. Hopefully will not rely on a fwd rookie on field or one at most.

You’ve got Rowell and Serong? I think there’s two on field spots at least. I’m sure bench options will turn up plus one on field starter even if it’s Bonar and the extra rookie up forward as others have suggested.

My concern with rookies is, they'll get a call up and get dropped after 1 or 2 games if their performance is substandard.
Bailey Scott bad memories.
I had him all year.
It’s unavoidable to some extent though isn’t it?
How many brought Bewley in as a downgrade last year as well.
But then you have the surprises like Balta who eventually come good.
It’s a lottery to some extent.

7 mids and Gawn is the way.

One of those unfortunate situations where he didn't tickle the old coach's fancy and didn't get on the radar of the new coach with the need for him to win over the old guard.

Will be interesting to see how he develops - clearly some holes in his game were evident last year (eg. barely a defensive bone in his body) but also showed a bit at times.
