Doedee suffering from a Setback would seem to increase Butts’s chances of staying in the team - there should be a vacancy in their side with Keath leaving for the dogs. They still have Hartigan returning but there should be room for Butts in the side with him in it. The timeline on Doedee’s return would probably determine his job security. Butts finished 10th in the SANFL for intercept marks and intercept possessions last year and put up a 130 score in round 16 with 11 intercepts and 26 disposals.

I think McLennan isn’t as far away from a round 1 debut as we might expect, he played in a game where the ball was up the other end of the ground with high TOG and the suns could do with an extra good ball user outside of Harbrow and Weller who is also a good interceptor. I expect more from him in JLT2.

Weller into the midfield makes some space but McLennan just looks like a poor scorer.
Weller is an option as a keeper.

That’s very risk averse at this stage. What are you hoping for from your M8?
I'm planning to set up with two mid rookies the same I did last year (Walsh and Cousins) ....

- So far M7 will be Rowell and M8 hopefully one of Anderson, Stephens or Serong
- Also struggling to fill my MID bench spots with any confidence at the moment
- Given that Picket plays on THU during the first two weeks I could also potentially loophole him depending on where I place my FD

I don't think he'll be a brilliant scorer but based on his prospectus profile I think he can be a decent slow burning cash cow to put on your bench. He's a good kick who averaged 15 disposals per game as a defender in the Neafl and he was top 3 of all teenagers in the league for intercept possessions. I think an okay average is possible and he might have scored very poorly due to the ball being up at the other end and perhaps just a bad game.

Went to watch the replay last night & it's not recorded, I've tried recording the whole series, but get recording clashes, so have been recording 1 at a time. Good news is, that the replay is on this arvo, so I'll check it out then. ?
@BigRuss had a look at the 1st half, 3 touches in the first term, led twice to CHF position and spoiled, otherwise the ball didn't follow him. 2nd term was his best, marked a ball 25m out and missed to the left, didn't allow for the wind which was going right to left, rookie mistake ?. Didn't come into the game again until 8 minutes left in the half, got a couple of marks on the back flank and passed off downfield accordingly reaching its target. Looked composed, had a couple of contested grabs on the wing which were spoiled, received a holding the man free on the forward flank, passed off doing the team thing instead of looking to have a selfish shot.

Definitely in for me, probably on the bench, he's likely competing with Dixon, Marshall, Ladhams, when Lycett returns, maybe Hoff if he's not playing half back.

If he had a bit of luck and clunked a couple of his chances, we'd be having a different conversation. Ken would be pleased with his effort and based on last years recruits, it would be likely he is picked round 1.

The thing is I think you have to start the expensive guys if you pick them. So if you find yourself constantly benching one because Pickett goes better than we expect then it can become a problem if you're forced to start a bad rookie somewhere else. But who knows at this stage.

If Pickett jumps out of the blocks then he will come straight on field using either a starting lineup change, early trades or DPP magic ...
The good thing is that we at least get an early look with him ...

But yep .... still very early days yet ...

Edit: also potentially provides cover for the likes of Jelly, Fyfe, Titch etc

I thought Georgiades did about what would've been expected of him. Competed well in the air and looked mobile enough to be a decent 3rd tall. It was a bit of a strange match though because Port used 3-4 extra players throughout.

I am planning to play the best scoring rookies on field, expensive or not. Rd 1 says they have the 'best chance if scoring' but basically a free for all after that! :)

Yeah sure I get that once things unfold but if you are going to fork out $200k you want to be pretty sure they are going to justify the spend, not looking at them as a loop option. Just IMO

Wow.

I'm running 4 onfield mids at present.

Rowell, Stephens, McHenry & Pickett.

If Anderson looks better then Stephens then I'll swap the two, but I think they'll score similarly.

Does anyone know the status of M Hibberd? I know he had a knee issue but thought it was not major. Maybe misses rd 1 or 2?
I will need to double check but I think he may be in full training now and could play Marsh 2 (or at least some of it)

This was posted on 12 Feb

New recruit Mitch Hibberd is also not far from returning to training following successful knee surgery in late January.

“Mitch should be back in the next couple of weeks, he’s doing extremely well.

“He started running yesterday, so we expect him to have a fairly quick build over the next two or three weeks.”

Essendon best 22 players are also generally struggling with injury this preseason, seems like it will be a long season honestly...

I think Hibberd is still an outside chance for R1, guys like Heppell and Zaha have really struggled this preseason from what I’ve read
