Probably surprising what the brain learns and retains over many many years (a lot of it probably useless info) but occasionally a little spark ignites and it can be useful.

To be honest though I do remember listening to Rex commentating games in the past on the radio and not having a single clue about who is was referring too ?

I would have thought most I use are fairly common , Apple & Apricot (for Steak knives and Maynard are my own creation though , but now I think about it I am not sure which one is Apple and which one is Apricot ? )
‘The appliance’ was one of my favourites...

Purchased the Rex Hunt autobiography a while ago for $1, managed to get him to sign it and now awaiting the opportune time to sell and bank the profit.

So does the Eddie Betts injury give any Carlton rookies a leg up for Rd 1?
Probably not a SC relevant rookie in any case. Here's the AFL author predicted side...

CARLTON
B:
Sam Docherty, Jacob Weitering, Lachie Plowman
HB: Sam Petrevski-Seton, Liam Jones, Kade Simpson
C: Sam Walsh, Patrick Cripps, Will Setterfield
HF: Jack Martin, Mitch McGovern, Zac Fisher
F: Michael Gibbons, Levi Casboult, Eddie Betts
FOLL: Matthew Kreuzer, Marc Murphy, Ed Curnow
I/C: Nic Newman, Jack Newnes, Jack Silvagni, Paddy Dow
EMERG: Tom Williamson, Marc Pittonet, Matthew Kennedy, David Cuningham

NEW: Jack Martin, Eddie Betts, Jack Newnes
UNAVAILABLE: Harry McKay (groin), Brodie Kemp (knee), Caleb Marchbank (knee), Charlie Curnow (knee)

NOTES: The big concern has shifted from McKay, who will almost certainly miss round one through a groin injury, to Marchbank. The key defender is battling a knock to the knee, which could prove one hurdle too far after a pre-season that was delayed by a neck injury. Petrevski-Seton is likely to make the team, having played a half in a VFL practice match last week as he returns from a quad problem. Newman should win the seventh defensive spot ahead of Williamson and Cam Polson, while the versatility of Silvagni and Dow might edge them ahead of emergencies Kennedy and Cunningham. Fellow first-round picks including Liam Stocker, Sam Philp and Lochie O'Brien will be in reserve. Casboult will support Kreuzer as the second ruckman, with Pittonet just ahead of Tom De Koning as an emergency. - Riley Beveridge
The closest SC relevant player might be De Koning in, but probably more likely a Cunningham or Kennedy comes in.

Unless there's some sort of restructure of roles (i.e. SPS forward....?) and then T.Williamson in. Unlikely though.

I don’t think he’s a bad pick, just don’t think he’ll be hard to get in if you want him during the year. Ranked 9th overall on points last year for fwds and I reckon he’ll improve again.
Hmmm him and petracca and Martin and parish all within cooeee of each other on price and none in my team atm. Yusef with his anticipate slow burn (my thoughts) and TJL both cheaper and allows me luxuries in other lines that I value...

(a) playing round 1, and

(b) playing through to the byes with only a game or two missed?

Anderson
Jackson
Ash

I think that's a bridge too far (b) - round 1 we'll have a reasonable idea from Monday as announcements are made around rookie debuts but I'm not even confident there will be a competition still running come byes.

Some relevant comments from the captains on rookies (and some mid pricers) from here (https://www.afl.com.au/news/384652/afl-stars-predict-your-club-s-fantasy-bolter). Sorry prices are AFL Fantasy prices.

  • "[Ben Davis ($170,000 FWD)] has got himself incredibly fit, he's an absolute Adonis. Myles Poholke ($288,000 FWD) you've seen little bits and pieces of, but his summer has been incredible." – Rory Sloane
  • "At a good price, I think it's Zac Bailey ($358,000 DEF/MID). I think he'll play a lot, he has the capacity to play forward, midfield and defence, he's fast, he's agile, and he's going to be around the ball a lot. I can't see why he can't have a good year." – Dayne Zorko
  • "I'll say Will Setterfield ($498,000 MID)." - Sam Docherty
  • "Cal Brown ($484,000 FWD), Josh Daicos ($431,000 MID), they'll probably get more midfield time and more exposure at senior level. Both those guys should score well." – Scott Pendlebury
  • "I'm going to go with Darcy Parish ($589,000 MID/FWD), he'll be huge. There'll still be a bit of a combination of midfield/forward for him this year, but I just think his genuine impact is going to be great this year." – Dyson Heppell
  • "Hayden Young ($258,000 DEF). I think he's going to play a lot of games and he's going to adapt to AFL quickly. After the usual period of coming to terms with things, he should become a good player." – Nat Fyfe
  • "Cooper Stephens ($240,000 MID) will probably play a few games this year. A young guy by the name of Ben Jarvis ($170,000 DEF) had a really good pre-season. I think Jordan Clark ($468,000 MID) is only going to improve on his first season." – Mitch Duncan
  • "If we're talking cash cows, Connor Budarick ($170,000 MID/FWD) is a good one. Matt Rowell ($270,000 MID) and Noah Anderson ($268,000 MID) will play, but Connor's probably one who will slip under the radar." - David Swallow
  • "Tom Green ($252,000 MID) is probably going to play early, but I'll say Harry Perryman ($562,000 MID)." – Stephen Coniglio
  • "I'll say Harry Morrison ($477,000 MID/FWD). He's experienced senior footy before. I think he played 21 games in 2018, played a few last year as well, so he's played at the top level already and I think he's had a strong pre-season and I think there'll be a spot at half-back for him with Blake Hardwick going down, so I think he'll be a regular." – Tom Mitchell
  • "Tom Sparrow ($293,000 FWD) … or Christian Petracca ($563,000 FWD), because his average wouldn't have been that high, surely." – Max Gawn
  • "I reckon Tarryn Thomas ($410,000 FWD) had a great year last year and will probably get a few more midfield minutes this year. He's a very classy player, so I reckon he's going to be a star for us." – Jack Ziebell
  • "Mitch Georgiadis ($236,000 FWD) might sneak in for round one. Dan Houston's ($596,000 DEF/MID) probably going to be a midfielder this year so you could get some value there." – Tom Jonas
  • "Marlion (Pickett) ($170,000 MID). He's not young, but he's fresh. Jack Ross ($419,000 MID) and Riley Collier-Dawkins ($170,000 MID), they're midfielders who could easily slot in and play some senior footy." – Trent Cotchin
  • "There's a few … Jack Lonie ($493,000 FWD) kicked eight goals over the two Marsh games but I think if we can stay healthy up forward with Max King and Rowan Marshall and Paddy Ryder going through there, someone like Tim Membrey ($593,000 FWD) will be pretty impactful because he'll get maybe the third- or second-best defender because Max or Paddy will take the bigger ones." – Seb Ross
  • "You'd have to say Dylan Stephens ($262,000 MID) and maybe Will Gould ($220,000 DEF). They might play round one, we'll see. But those two would be the obvious ones. I'm just not sure of the prices or who is cheap, though." – Josh Kennedy
  • "I haven't done Fantasy for 10 years so I don't know how it works but I'll say Jarrod Brander ($217,000 DEF/FWD). I think we'll see him play a few games this year, he's been on the list for a couple of years and he's played a handful of games but he looks to have gone to another level over summer and has been a good performer for us." - Luke Shuey
  • "Bailey Williams ($575,000 DEF) has cemented himself in our back six. He looks really set to progress his career pretty quickly." – Marcus Bontempelli
Good one! Zac Bailey is actually $263,000 and am strongly considering him.
Are these DT prices?

Edit: yes, didn't read top part, sorry.

That’s a fair call.

For what it’s worth, looking at the top 10 for the last 3 years (ie sample of 30), 19 have debuted in R1 or 2, and 13 of those have played 10-11 of the first 11 games.

That means around 2/3 of the high priced rookies that debut early will typically play a lot of games to mid year.

If we assume the comp runs as normal, are there any you think would be a good shot to do that?

I think the bolded will fit into both your (a) and (b) categories.

The ones in italics I think are still iffy for Round 1.
Jackson/Serong if named could stay in for regular games til the byes
Ash, even if named, I think is at high risk of playing 2 or less before his bye (i.e. never to be seen again once Z.Williams returns). If named alongside Z.Williams and no one else is injured, lock and load however (unlikely scenario).

I think all things going well with the AFL season and Covid-19 probably only Rowell and Noah Anderson would play all games out of that group.

If the AFL moves towards cramming more games into the first part of the season I would say none, 5 day turnarounds for the kids, let alone most seasoned players will be too much.

Noble or BZT or McAsey? Can only afford one.
And who do people have for the midfield bench? I'm struggling to fill that up with cheap rookies who have decent JS...
I have Green but can't afford Starcevich unless I sacrifice $$$ in other positions.
